I remember vaguely that it was by Nora Roberts, but im not so sure about that. But the story is about a man who comes to stay at a hotel/inn owned by our female lead. He is actually undercover to find out the truth about this inn.. He was told that the owner of the inn(the female lead character) was not who she looks like. I think he starts working at her inn, to get to know about her better.. But eventually he sees that she is not who she was told to be and falls in love with her and eventually finds the truth which confirms his gut feeling.

I read this book, the H had a mentor who died and left him something (he thought it was a painting), in the care of the Inn keeper, the female lead). The H distrusts the h and stays at the Inn where he soon finds himself repairing things around the Inn as he is trying to figure out what his dear friend and mentor left him. It is an early 90s book.
Doesn't sound like one of Nora Roberts then.
