NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11241 comments The Hidden Canyon, by John Blaustein and Edward Abbey (with Martin Litton and Kevin Fedarko). My review is of the 2015 edition:

This book is gorgeous. I referred to it often while I was reading In the Heart of the Canyon, which is about a group of people on a two week trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. It has a great map that helped me follow along, and incredible pictures. I read the 2015 edition which is described as having more vivid pictures than the original 1977 edition. Did I mention they're gorgeous? (Photos 5 stars)

The new edition has a preface by John Blaustein who took the photographs, which included some interesting background. I also enjoyed the essays by Litton and Fedarko. Edward Abby's journal of their original boat trip was quite funny, especially if you like irreverent and teasing humor. (He insults the boats, John and others). He used to be a park ranger, which offers a different perspective. He also talked about the travesty of the Dam at Glen Canyon. His writing is sexist by today's standards, but I suppose I would have found it funny in 1977.

Note for challenges - there are multiple editions with different dates, and page numbers. As far as I can tell, Abbey's journal is the same in each edition, but the other essays may be different.
