SOLVED. YA book set in a highschool-- boy POV, trying to solve his school's D-List: who is "D listing" girls and making them undateable? [s]

I read this around 2008. I remember a stunning number of details, just not the title. The cover had two kids' shoes facing each other, one was a pair of Burgundy converse. The boy lives with his mom, who does their house in all red and dances burlesque. He has a best friend who's a girl, so he's hoping she won't get D-Listed (Red D on her picture all over school) because that means no one will want to date her. He does a stakeout in his car to figure it out, but to no avail. Spoilers below:

It turns out to be a misunderstanding started by this loner kid who goes by a nickname, but was born named Dee. He was trying to seem cool last year by writing "Dee did her" on a popular girl's picture after she dumped him, but then he got interrupted after writing the D, and it became a weird part of school culture to "D List" girls and ruin their reputation. Obviously, POV character and his gal pal admit they like-like each other.
