the water tribe

the water tribe is a collective term for the nation of people who practice the art of waterbending. it is one of the original four nations and its citizens primarily inhabit the northern and southernmost regions of the globe, near both poles. there is a small community of waterbenders that populate the foggy swamp in the earth kingdom, although they are isolated from their sister tribes for generations and others are largely unaware of their existence.

the people of the water tribe are generally peaceful, and strive to live in harmony with nature and the other nations of the world. there are two primary divisions of the water tribe, the northern tribe and the southern tribe. although in the past there was significant exchange between the north and south, contact between the two tribes was interrupted due to the chaos of the war.

the water tribe is less powerful than both the earth kingdom and the fire nation, due to its geographical location and the small size of its population and economy. the economy is dependent on the ocean, given the country's location and lack of arable land, apparent manufacturing capacity or mineable resources.

the north

the northern water tribe is an independent state located within the realms of the north pole, ruled by a hereditary monarchic chiefdom. as the oldest division of the three water tribes, the northern water tribe dominated both the north pole as well as the south pole for centuries. its capital city, agna qel'a, is notable for being made almost entirely out of ice. even though much of its territory encompasses largely inhospitable tundra terrain, the northern water tribe always thrived in its isolation. unlike its counterpart, the southern water tribe, the north never succumbed to foreign invasions by the fire nation.

the people of the northern water tribe are traditionally conservative and very spiritual, but still open to change and reform. the northern waterbending style is the most widespread form, practiced by waterbenders at both poles.

the south

the southern water tribe is an independent state located at the south pole and is the southern division of the water tribes. a federation of several smaller tribes, the south is ruled by a council of elders, who also elect the tribe's chief. the southern water tribe has had an eventful history and saw times of prosperity and freedom as well as decline and genocide. before the war, the south was thriving and had a unique culture and waterbending style. after a series of brutal fire nation raids, however, the south pole was left devastated and nearly all the surviving waterbenders had been taken prisoner.

culture

the appearance of the water tribe is based on its corresponding element, water. each of the nations has its own elemental color, which in the case of the water tribes is blue. the foggy swamp tribe is an exception, as they tend to wear green due to their affinity with plants.

the water tribe is divided into three distinct groups, primarily based on their geography and affinity for waterbending. the northern tribe consists of the majority of the official remnants of their civilization, occupying the north pole with a multitude of able benders. though separated, the southern and northern tribes continued to remain in contact prior to the war and at one time even retained a custom of coming together during a new moon justly called the new moon celebration.

the foggy swamp tribe occupies a swamp in the earth kingdom, while most, if not all, of its members are competent benders with some unique talents, such as plantbending.

despite having some patriarchal inclination, the water tribe has a long history of acceptance regarding same-sex relationships. they believe that one's personal life is theirs to divulge and no one else's.

in the northern water tribe, women are of marrying age at the age of sixteen. males who wish to marry females gift them with a traditional betrothal necklace. this signifies that the woman is to be married. the ceremony is completely organized by the parents, and marriage of free choice is not practiced. however, in the southern water tribe, it seems that people are allowed to choose their own spouses.

when they turn fourteen, southern water tribe children are taken on a rite of passage known as ice dodging, a sport where the children must control a ship in turbulent water riddled with large, haphazard chunks of ice. after completing the ritual, they are given marks of honor: the mark of the brave, the mark of the wise, and the mark of the trusted.

each of the four nations is influenced by their own distinct, dominant season. the water tribe's dominant season is winter. to an effect, more waterbenders are born during winter than any other season and their waterbending is at its peak during the winter due to the longer nights and freezing conditions. in actuality, each polar tribe experience winter-like weather consistently, with snow falling year-round.

waterbending

waterbending, one of the four elemental bending arts, is the hydrokinetic ability to control water in all of its various forms. this type of bending is used by the people of the water tribe, who are divided into the southern, northern, and lesser-known foggy swamp tribes, each with their own unique bending style.

water is the element of change. the moon is the source of power in waterbending, and the original waterbenders learned to bend by observing how the moon pushed and pulled the tides. the water tribes are the only people who did not learn to bend from an animal, though the moon and ocean spirits took the form of koi fish in the mortal world near the beginning of the avatar world.

the fighting style of waterbending is mostly fluid and graceful, acting in concert with the environment. foggy swamp style waterbending, however, is more rigid and straight. waterbenders deal with the flow of energy; they let their defense become their offense, turning their opponents' own forces against them. even when waterbenders do take an attack stance, their moves always appear to flow from one to the other.
