I’m reading one of the author’s other books for another task today.

I read the first two chapters.

After finishing Jack: The True Story of Jack and the Beanstalk yesterday, it seems that this story takes place in the land of the giants. (I read the introductions to the other three books that were included at the end of Jack. I think all three of them do.) There are names mentioned already that I recognize from Jack, but they are younger versions here. I do not think it is going to matter, but I will have to keep the spoilers in mind, since I know what happened to them later in life, in Jack.

The published order of the books is Rump, Jack, Red, and Grump. Looks like I should have read our buddy read book first.
I was not too interested in Red, but it looks like I might check it out, after reading Rump.

Interesting. I like the atmosphere of this story and the way it is being told much better than I liked Jack. I have not rolled my eyes once yet. I finished chapter four. I would go on, but I need to quit and get some work done. Lots of foreshadowing in chapter four. I’m glad I started with Rump since it was the first in the series. I also have Grump on hold but perhaps I will hold off and read Red after this one.

Btw, I'm on chapter 8. I like it better (view spoiler)[where the miller is a filthy cheat than the original one where he tends to exaggerate things. I just feel it fits better.

It reminds me of an old time, when Gran told Rump to kill the chicken. When I was a little, my mom kept some chickens and when we didn't have enough money to buy food, we had a feast. I think it was around the reformation era, so having livestock was a big help. The only sad thing was that chicken doesn't grow from earth, and so eventually they were all gone. Maybe this how Rump feels as well. (hide spoiler)]

re pixies (view spoiler)[ This is the first author that I have read, that has ever indicated that pixies bite. Normally, they are cute little people with wings and sparkles of fairy dust. They can be very mischievous, as Tinkerbell is in Peter Pan. Here, it seems that their bite is like a bee or wasp sting, because it swelled up and was painful. (hide spoiler)]

I read chapter five thru twelve.

First, let me say what an idiot I feel like. This is the second book in this series and until chapter eleven, in this one, I completely MISSED how the shortened form of King Barf’s name came about. (view spoiler)[ For some reason, my mind preferred to see Barf as a shortened form of Bartholomew and Fife. I did not put it together until I saw it spelled out three times on the same page in my book. This is in chapter eleven, where the King is being announced to the people in The Village on The Mountain. Bartholomew archibald reginald fife. DID you two see it? (hide spoiler)]

Chapter five (view spoiler)[ I think that Kessler the Peddler guy has a few screws missing when it comes to magic. He didn’t appear to have much control over his results. At least there were no mice left in The Village. Red seems to more about magic than she lets on. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter six (view spoiler)[ So Rump’s Destiny is to spin. It seems the Pixies are the ones to put the idea of spinning “something” into gold into his head though. Good thing there was straw on the floor and in his mattress, huh? (hide spoiler)]

Ayacchi - I watched the video last night, but the audio was messed up. I had never seen it before, but I recognized the story. I think the one we are reading is going to be different.

Really? It was fine on me. I wasn't in the mood to read the Grimm's version so I just watched it. Surely it has a different storyline

Chapter 9 (view spoiler)[His Gran is dead 😭 I thought she'd tell him his real name, but then I remember she didn't know either. I wonder when and how he'll find it out. It seems that life will be tougher for him, especially the business with the miller! (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 13(view spoiler)[The witch of the woods is Red’s grandma. She said she needs to find his ‘stiltskin’. I was like ohh, she’s going to tell him his real name, didn’t happen.

So the Miller must know that Rump is tongue tied and couldn’t talk to bargain back.

Chapters 13-25(view spoiler)[Helping Opal was not a smart move. He ended up getting into worse trouble. Now he gets her first born baby?

I loved him meeting up with the trolls. Funny how they created a rumor that they eat people.

It was so nice that he met his aunts. I wonder why Hilda has such an issue with his mother. Did his mother get her into trouble too?

I liked that Ida names the animals and Rump reflects on how he treated his animals.

He learns his first name. It fits, a magical bind. He needs to find that stiltskin soon since a baby is coming. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 25-end (view spoiler)[I felt bad when he left his aunts to save them and ended up getting picked up by the Miller’s sons. I liked how he figured his last name and was able to give back Opal’s baby. I liked how he returned her jewelry too even though he earned it.

He was very clever with the pixies. Saving Red and being able to leave.

I like how his seedling was growing.

I felt for the author talking about her name and trying to find personalized items with names. I have done the same thing trying to find my own name and never even coming close. My dad, mom and sister’s names were all there but never mine. I also feel her about the name and no one being able to say it or spell it. I had that in school where someone would say my name with a question or call mean Jeanie or Jean because they couldn’t say it. Or better yet, they just say my last name because it is easier. Jannene - I saw you finished and posted it to your trivia challenge. I was determined to finish my monthly challenge book this weekend. I just did!

I have really enjoyed this story and I am anxious to finish and see how it ends. It kind of wandered around a little but not too badly. I just noticed that I posted my status for the audiobook that I was reading instead of where I was in THIS book. I’m at chapter 25 Warnings from Red. (view spoiler)[I thought the Trolls and their Sludge were great! I had hoped that the Aunts would have been a little more helpful, but at least they took him in and are feeding him. (hide spoiler)]

I finished the book tonight because I wanted to report it in my yearly challenge list with the other book that I finished. I really liked the ending of the story. I thought the author made some great points and I liked how she explained the destiny etc. I am looking forward to reading Red, but not for a while.

Regarding the author's note (view spoiler)[I felt bad for her regarding her name too. I was never teased, but it used to drive me crazy because people ALWAYS asked me how to spell it. I made sure to name my daughters a very short common name and spell it the traditional way, just because of it. (hide spoiler)]

I had a coworker that spelled her name the same way as yours.

I have only met one other person who did. I hate it when people always ask me how to spell it, especially at Starbucks. For some reason, I can never remember to tell them Agnes or Sue or something. I am always amazed when I am with my daughter and they want to know how she spells Amy. She just gives them “The Look”.

My name is a very common one and is unisex, with variation spellings. People often ask me how to spell it and worse, they think I'm a boy. And I'm on a point that I don't bother anymore to correct it.

About the book, (view spoiler)[it's annoyed me sometimes why Rump had to help Opal. It's not entirely his fault. And Opal has no gratitude so it'd be better if she's doomed. Does it make me bad to wish that way? lol. The story about Trolls is kind of oot and I can't see the connection. But it's fun to read this version, afterall, everything has 2 sides of stories. Now Troll doesn't sound so scary. They just smell. Bad. (hide spoiler)]

Ayacchi (view spoiler)[I also felt it wasn't Rump's fault. He is 12 and not really old enough to understand the consequences. He wasn't taught by his grandma the reasons why he shouldn't use his powers. He kind of was painted into a corner with Mr. Miller's greed once he found out. He wanted to get some food for him and his grandma. It really was Mr. Miller's fault that Opal was in trouble. He wanted Opal to be a part of it, I feel and Rump really had no one to talk through what to do. (hide spoiler)]

I agree with you both being annoyed about Rump thinking that he HAD to help Opal, but on the other hand, if he didn't there would have been no way for him to get her third "gift" either. It was really the story tie-in.
