September 1, 2020 - September 30, 2020

This month's capital challenge in Africa was created by Meg!
Gabrone-Skyline-SM
Gaborone is the tranquil, low-key capital of Botswana in the southern part of Africa. Botswana is, in fact, located just north of South Africa itself, with Gaborone just 15 kilometers from the border. Enjoy your visit.

✱ Gaborone is the economic capital as well as the government capital. Its modern downtown is home to numerous corporate headquarters, the Botswana Stock Exchange, and a multitude of government buildings. The Main Mall, the road that runs through the city center, consists of mainly commercial businesses.
✱ The city was named after Kgosi Gaborone, leader of the Batlokwa people who migrated from their ancestral homelands in the Magaliesberg Mountains and, in 1881, settled in the Tlokweng area. They named their new settlement along the Notwane River "Moshaweng". Early European settlers changed the name to Gaborones, a short form of Gaborone's Village. It was later further shorted to Gabarone, which literally means ‘it does not fit badly’ or ‘it is not unbecoming.”.
✱ The current Gaborone was only founded in 1964, after a decision was made to establish a capital for Botswana. The country became a self governing territory in 1965, before becoming a fully independent republic on September 30, 1966. The building of the town started in 1964 and was originally planned for 20,000 people. It has long since become one of Africa's fastest growing cities, becoming home more than 230,000 people by 2011. A major problem stemming from this has been unemployment and the proliferation of squatters settling on undeveloped land.

Patrizia - I believe this one only needs the first LETTER of the title needs to be found in it (ignoring A, An or The).

Does that clarify?

Not quite .... I think the problem is that the phrase "the first word of the title"

Do you mean that the title must start with a letter in the target phrase? (i.e. That the first LETTER of the first word in the title (excl A, An, The) must be found in the target phrase?

OR

Do you really mean that the entire first WORD of the title must be in the target phrase?

.

There are a few wild game reserves in, or close to, the city. As well, there is Lion Park Resort, which even includes carnival-type rides. Reviews are mixed for the reserves; several have mentioned that there are times most animals are not around. However, those lucky enough to see wild game mention giraffes, zebras, impalas, kudos, monkeys, and a good variety of birds, including ostriches. Lions are the feature of the Resort.

🎏 4. The Three Dikgosi Monument
The Three Dikgosi or Three Chiefs Monument is a bronze sculpture located in the Central Business District. It features 18-foot tall bronze statues of three chiefs who played significant roles in Botswana's independence: Khama III of the Bangwato, Sebele I of the Bakwena, and Bathoen I of the Bangwaketse. Their trip to England to see the Secretary of State for the Colonies and Queen Victoria, and the result of that trip, eventually led to their independence in the 1960's.
✱ Read a book where the first word of the title can be found in THE THREE DIKGOSI (ignore "The").

🎏 5. The National Museum and Art Gallery
The National Museum and Art Gallery opened in 1968 and features items ranging from traditional crafts to original paintings to works of art by local artists. The museum also holds exhibits such as Artists in Botswana and Children's Art Competition. One special exhibit features the San, said to be the earliest inhabitants of southern Africa. The nine-acre National Botanical Garden was opened on the grounds in 2007, with 90% of the plants native to Botswana.

🎏 6. The Gaborone Dam
The Gaborone Dam on the Notwane River is an expanding recreational area. It currently has a yacht club on the northern side of the reservoir, and a fishing club at the southern end. Also at this end is a new public facility called City Scapes, which has parks, playgrounds, and boating facilities. The dam is also a popular spot for birdwatchers, windsurfers, and anglers, though swimming is not allowed due to crocodiles and parasitic bilharzias.
