A boy had his dream to join the Roman legion crushed because he lost his left hand when he was attacked by a wolf. However, he went ahead and joined the border legion guarding the Hadrian Wall (perhaps not as a soldier?). I can't remember what the story was about, but it started my love of learning everything about Ancient Rome.
