This book was set in post World War II Canada and was about a girl working to uncover the mystery of her mother's life. The mother was an immigrant from Europe, seeking to escape the horrors of the Holocaust, and she had an arranged marriage to a Jewish man in Canada. The woman was extremely unhappy in her marriage and just with her life in general in Canada. She was always a bit aloof with her husband and mother-in-law and seemed to be hiding away secrets. She almost never cooked or did the food shopping, which annoyed her mother-in-law and was quite strange for the time period. She abandoned her husband and daughter when the girl was still very young. The girl has been raised by her father and by her aunt and uncle (the father's brother). The grandmother is also very involved (the father's mother). Someone in the novel (forgetting who) worked in the jewelry business, cutting diamonds. I read this book in 2019 but it was not a new release (didn't seem abundantly old either though).
