YA/Children’s novel about boy discovering family secret

I read this book when I was in elementary school (2008-2009) and I cannot for the life of me remember what it was called. It was probably less than 200 pages.

It was fictional, and the protagonist was a boy. It was set in the late 90s - early 2000s. I think there was some kind of family secret that he discovered. I feel like it may have had to do something with an outlaw. I remember there was something to do with salt in it. Salt may have been in the title and it possibly may have taken place in Salt Lake City I don’t remember.

This is really vague, so I doubt anyone will know what I’m talking about, but I thought I’d give it a shot.

All I am 100% certain about is that salt was somehow incorporated into it, but I’m not sure how important it was.
