I read this book in like 2011 or 2012 maybe—it’s a series of books and I think the author's first name might have been Melissa. They were middle grade chapter books about a family who lived in a castle (it might have had a name with Schloss in the title). There was kind of a macabre but friendly vibe around them, Addams family-esque.
The first book concerned the two children not succeeding in driving away their newest nanny because she is tough and wise to their tricks, and they eventually come to love her; meanwhile, the father is believed to have abandoned the family but was actually kidnapped after a fight with his wife and has been held captive (by a brother or other relation?) ever since. In later books they go on vacation, and a character gets rabies. (Maybe not in the same book.)
