3 Months from Start

Our Wanderlust member Patrizia has created this wonderful Italian Adventure challenge. Thank you for sharing your beautiful country with us!!
Italy-Map
Italy is a peninsula and for its shape it is also known as the Stivale (the Boot). Since the 16th century it has been part of the Grand Tour undertaken in various countries of Europe by aristocrats and intellectuals to broaden their knowledge. The main stages of their journey are the same that can't be missed in today's trip to Italy: Venice, Florence, Rome and Naples. Buon viaggio! Have a good trip!

Choose a level:
Daytripper: Complete one task per day for a total of 10 tasks.
Explorer: Complete 15 of the 20 tasks. You must complete at least one task per day.

Challenge Rules: All forms of books are accepted as long as they are 100 pages or more. When posting updates of completed books, please include a link to the title and author’s name, along with the date you finished reading the book. Please post cover if it is task appropriate. When you have completed the challenge, please copy and paste your entire challenge and repost in a new message, letting us know it is completed.

*Please note: the challenge was translated using Google translate.

*******************************************************************

Day 1: Milan
The-Last-Supper
At the beginning of the journey you'll almost certainly land in Milan, the economic capital of Italy. Don't be fooled by its modern appearance, due in large part to the damage suffered during the Second World War, and by the hectic life of its inhabitants. Even in its historic center there are remarkable artistic and cultural gems to see. To honor one of the most illustrious Italian men, a true genius, whose fifth centenary of his death occurred last year, visit Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper (the Cenacolo). After a restoration taking many years you can admire this masterpiece painted between 1494 and 1498 with a particular technique that put its duration at risk. Other damage was suffered during the German occupation when Nazi soldiers used it for shooting practice.

* Read a book whose author's first and last initial can be found in LEONARDO DA VINCI or read a book with 1, 4, 9 or 8 in the page count.

Day 2: Venice
Venice-3
The historic center of Venice includes 121 islands connected by 436 bridges, the best known of all is the famous Rialto Bridge which crosses the Grand Canal. The Bridge of Sighs is also very famous for its beauty, but not everyone knows that the sighs were those of prisoners led from prisons to the seat of the court that was to judge them and vice versa. Given the large number of canals and streams, there is always a high number of boats circulating in the city: the most typical is the “gondola”, which today is used almost exclusively to carry tourists around.

* Read a book with a boat, a bridge or a body of water on the cover (post the cover) or read a book with all the letters of VENICE found in the title (any order).

St-Marks
Piazza San Marco (St. Mark's Square) is a treasure chest and the best known place in Venice. The Basilica di San Marco (Church of St. Mark) was consecrated in 1094 and is famous for the beautiful mosaics that adorn both the interior and part of the facade. On the latter were also placed two works looted by the Venetians in Constantinople (present day Istanbul) during the IVth Crusade: The Quadriga (it's a copy, the original is kept in the museum of the basilica) and the Statues of the Tetrarchs. The bell tower, built in 1173, collapsed in 1902 and has been completely rebuilt. On one side of the square stands the Palazzo Ducale (Doge's Palace) which was the seat of the government of the Republic of Venice, known in past centuries as the Serenissima. The palace, rebuilt and renovated several times since the beginning of the 9th century, is today a highly visited museum. So in this square you can see monuments that have almost two millennia of life.

* Read a book that has more than 2000 ratings on its GR home page or read a book with a MC whose first name starts with a letter in SERENISSIMA.

Day 3: Venice
Torcello
In Venice there are many tourist attractions and there is a certain charm to go up and down the “calli” (the typical city streets). But for our second day I want to take you around the islands furthest from the city center. Let's start with one little known, but with great interest thanks to its archaeological heritage: Torcello. Today it is practically uninhabited, but it was one of the first islands in the lagoon to be inhabited, although starting from the 15th century it was gradually abandoned due to the swamping of the area. You have to visit the basilica, built around the year 1000, and the church of Santa Fosca which has a Greek cross plan, very little widespread in Italy.

* Read a book set on an island or read a book whose title begins with a letter that can be found in TORCELLO.

Lace Murano
Then you can move to the more touristy Burano and Murano, characterized by very colorful houses and their craft activities. Burano is famous for its lace, which became a luxury item sought after by kings and queens. Murano, on the other hand, has been the home of the glass industry since 1291. The product was so renowned (and still is) that the recipe for producing it was for centuries a real state secret. It seems that in the past some states have tried to obtain the recipe on how to make glass by implementing a sort of industrial espionage. Certainly, until the advent of Bohemian crystal, Murano glass enjoyed an absolute primacy, but even after its quality allowed it to continue to be a luxury object desired by many.

* Read a book with a handmade object on the cover (post the cover) or read a book tagged MYSTERY on its GR homepage.

Day 4: Florence
de-Medici
Florence is the cradle of the Renaissance. Its historic center has been named a UNESCO site since 1982; thanks also to the legacy left by the Medici family, who ruled the city and Tuscany almost uninterruptedly from 1433 to 1737, when the state passed to the Habsburg-Lorraine. The last of the Medici, the electress of the Palatine Anna Maria Luisa, left the collections owned by the family to the city of Florence, thus preventing them from being dispersed around the world which happened for the goods owned by other Italian families. It should also be remembered that on 30 November 1786 the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo abolished the death penalty for the first time in the world.

* Read book in which the name of the author or MC is Anne, Mary or Louise (or variants of these names; translations are ok) or read a book with 1, 9, 8 or 2 in the total page count.

Florence-2
Florence is full of churches, palaces and museums, all worthy of a visit, so two days cannot be enough. So let's see what cannot be missed. We start from Piazza del Duomo, where the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (St. Mary of the Flower) stands. When its construction was completed in 1436 it was the largest church in the world (however, the facade was added in the 19th century). Brunelleschi's dome is a masterpiece of engineering and architecture of the time: if you feel like climbing the 463 steps in a very narrow place, from the lantern placed on top of the dome you can see a remarkable panorama. The same is true if you go up to Giotto's bell tower: here there are only 413 steps. After visiting the cathedral don't miss the Baptistery with its octagonal plan. After seeing the external doors, including that of Paradise, the work of Lorenzo Ghiberti, enter and admire the mosaics of the dome.

* Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in CATHEDRAL OF SANTA MARIA DEL FIORE (three word minimum) or read a book with a church on the cover (post the cover).

Piazza-della-Signoria
Let's move now to the nearby Piazza della Signoria, dominated by Palazzo Vecchio. Built at the beginning of the 14th century, it has served as the seat of the city government, and today it also has an interesting museum. In front of its entrance there is a copy of Michelangelo's famous David (the original is the star of the Accademia museum). On the side stands the Loggia dei Lanzi, where several statues are kept. On the same side you can access the famous Uffizi: built in the 16th century to house the main offices of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, it os now one of the most visited museums in the world. Note that it was opened to the public in 1769 by Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo.

* Read a book featuring a museum or a gallery or read a book tagged HISTORY or HISTORICAL in its GR homepage.

Day 5: Florence
Giardino-di-Boboli
Palazzo Pitti was built in the mid-fifteenth century by the Florentine banker Luca Pitti and was purchased in 1550 by Eleonora da Toledo, wife of the first Grand Duke of Tuscany. Thus it became the palace of the Medici, who enlarged it several times. From 1865 to 1871, when Florence was the capital of Italy, it hosted the Savoy royal family. Inside there are several museums: my favorite is the museum of fashion and costume, the most important of its kind in Italy. You must absolutely see the splendid Boboli gardens that rise at the back of the building.

* Read a book with a royal character (real or fictitious) or read a book with a palace or mansion WITH a garden on the cover (post the cover).

Firenze Firenze-2
The flood of November 4, 1966 risked a serious blow to the artistic and cultural heritage of Florence. From the rest of Italy and from all over the world, many people came, especially young people, to help in all possible ways: they are the so-called “angeli del fango” (mud angels). Few people know that volunteering was practically born in Florence, when in 1244 some citizens founded the Confraternita della Misericordia (Fraternity of Mercy) with the aim of helping the poor and the sick for free and anonymously. Since then, voluntary associations have spread everywhere and operate in various fields: social, health, environmental, cultural, etc. In Italy they are often on the front line when there is an emergency: a big thank you goes to them.

* Read a book with a character who volunteers or is a first responder (paramedic, firefighter, law enforcement officers, etc.) or read a book set in November.

Day 6: Rome
Rome
According to tradition, Rome was founded on April 21, 753 BC from Romolo making it almost 3000 years old. From the third century BC, Rome began its expansion which led
it to control much of Europe and the entire Mediterranean basin giving it the name of “Caput mundi” (capital of the world). Numerous ruins that have attracted travelers since the 15th century remain from this glorious era. The symbol of ancient Rome is certainly the Colosseum, built between 71 and 80. It was partly sacked in medieval times, when many of the Roman buildings were used as sources of building material or reused for another purpose (for example, Castel Sant'Angelo was built in the Middle Ages by modifying the mausoleum of Hadrian). Among other possible visits, try not to miss the one to the Imperial Forums, where several monuments built from the time of Julius Caesar until the beginning of the second century AC are gathered and whose remains partially came to light in the last century.

* Read a book set in the ancient era (before the year 1000) or read a book that has more than 3000 reviews on its GR page.

Appia
A proverb says that all roads lead to Rome: indeed the ancient Romans built a network
of roads that radiated from the capital throughout the Empire. Originally built for a military purpose (they had to speed up the movement of troops), they were also used for commercial and administrative purposes. Together with bridges and aqueducts they show the engineering skill of this ancient people. Even today it's possible to find perfectly preserved traces in that part of Europe and in the Mediterranean basin controlled by the Romans. In Rome you can visit the Appia Way Archaeological Park (Appia was considered the queen of the streets) where still intact sections of the road can be found. You will also find tombs because the Romans used to bury their dead immediately outside the city walls. Take your time and walk in this green oasis! In recent years, after the success of a journalistic reportage, efforts have been made to reconstruct a path on the road that linked Rome to Brindisi in southern Italy for walkers and cyclists.

* Read a book with a road on the cover (post the cover) or read a book that has travel as a theme or in which characters travel.

Day 7: Rome
Saint-Peter-s-Basilica
In addition to being the capital of Italy, Rome is also the residence of the pope, the highest office of the Catholic Church. All this means that many ceremonies can take place in the city, both religious and civil. From 756 to 1871 the pope was also the ruler of a large part of central Italy, while now his territorial government extends only to what is now the smallest country in the world: the Vatican City. The symbol known everywhere of the papacy is the Basilica di San Pietro (St. Peter's basilica). The construction of the current building began in 1506 and ended in 1626, while the square next to it was finished forty years later. Not everyone knows that the basilica is not the cathedral church (seat of the bishop) of Rome, a title that belongs to the basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano (St. John Lateran), still considered the most important Catholic church.

* Read a book where a ceremony takes place (tell us which one) or read a book in which the name of the protagonist begins with one of the letters present in the VATICAN.

Adam-2
Over the centuries, the popes have accumulated an impressive collection of works of art ranging from antiquities to contemporary works. So you should not miss a visit to the Vatican Museums! Inside there are several museums and collections (hence the name in the plural), so you'll clearly have to make a choice on what to see, according to your passions. Keep in mind that with the same ticket you can also visit some rooms of the Vatican palaces, including the star known everywhere: the Cappella Sistina (Sistine Chapel) with the famous frescoes by Michelangelo. If it is a beautiful day, try to visit the impressive gardens, where the Pope still goes to meditate today. Technically we left Italy today, but it isn't possible to visit Rome without also seeing the Vatican! In reality, then, there are no physical borders between the two states; plus the entrance to the Vatican Museums is in Italy while the rest of the complex is in the Vatican.

* Read a book set in two different countries or read a book tagged RELIGION or CHRISTIAN in its GR homepage.

Day 8: Naples
Via-SG
Naples was founded in the eighth century BC and was one of the most important colonies of Magna Grecia. It is a city full of churches, castles and museums, but I want to take you to a particular street, via San Gregorio Armeno, where the artisan shops sell the figurines for the presepe. The latter is a representation of the Nativity and traditionally the first specimen is traced back to St. Francis of Assisi. In Italy there is no city, town or dare I say, home that doesn't set up its presepe at Christmas. Some are spectacular and in some cases ended up in a museum. In Naples the custom wants it to be set in eighteenth-century Naples. If you come to Italy during the Christmas holidays, go and look for public presepe, often set up in churches or squares. If not, I suggest you try to see some in a local museum.

* Read a book set during a holiday (tell us the holiday - bonus if it's for Christmas!) or read a book with all the letters of NAPLES in the title (any order).

Pizza-Plus
Naples is the birthplace of pizza, the best known and most popular Italian food in the world. Pizza can be seasoned with various ingredients: the most common pizza in Italy is the Margherita (tomato, mozzarella and basil), which owes its name to the Italian Queen Margherita di Savoia. In 2017 UNESCO declared the art of Neapolitan pizza maker as an intangible heritage of humanity. In general, Italian cuisine is appreciated all over the world and each location has its own specialty: always try to eat the delicacies of the place, washed down with one of the many Italian wines, even if at the end of the trip you'll probably have taken a few extra pounds.

* Read a book with food or/and drink on the cover (post the cover; bonus if there are pizza and/or wine on it!) or read a book that was published in 2017.

Day 9: Naples
Vesuvious
Naples is dominated by Vesuvius, an active volcano whose last eruption dates back to 1944. Today it is a tourist destination as well as another volcanic area, located west of the city: the Campi Flegrei (Phlegraean Fields ). The latter has been frequented since ancient times due to the presence of several spas and its lake of Averno is considered the access to the Underworld. This area, which is technically a large caldera in a state of quiescence, has several volcanic craters and is subject to bradyseism (alternation of ascents and descents of the ground): the latter phenomenon has meant that today the ruins of Baia, the most important Roman colony at the beginning of the Empire, are now partly underwater. Finally, the area is subject to strong earthquakes.

* Read a book where there is a natural disaster (eruption, earthquake, flood, etc.) in it or read a book whose title begins with a letter that can be found in CAMPI FLEGREI.

Pompeii-2
In 79 AC Pompeii and nearby Herculaneum, in addition to the lesser known Stabia and Oplonti, were destroyed by an eruption of Vesuvius. The ashes covered these towns until Herculaneum was accidentally discovered in 1709 and subsequent discoveries led to the decision to also excavate Pompeii and Oplonti. These excavations are still in progress and have led to various discoveries in recent times. The three archaeological areas have been a UNESCO site since 1997, but the most visited is certainly Pompeii. Take your time to travel it far and wide, you'll not regret it! In particular, don't miss the superb architecture or the famous frescoes, characterized by a bright red background.

* Read the 7th or 9th book in a series or read a book with a mostly red cover (post the cover).

Day 10: The rest of Italy
Castello-Malaspina
We quickly visited the most famous tourist places in the country, but keep in mind that in Italy there are 55 UNESCO sites. In addition to this, in each location or area you can find a monument, a landscape or even a simple panorama that will take your breath away. You can practically take the map of the country, close your eyes and point your finger at a random point and you'll surely end up near or right on an interesting place to visit. For example, the castle in the photograph, which stands in my mother's hometown (Fosdinovo in Tuscany), is quite well known, but it is certainly not one of the most famous among those existing in Italy.

* Read a book set in Italy or read a book from your TBR that "asks" to be read and savored.

Library
The first public library in Italy dates back to ancient Rome: the idea was of Julius Caesar, but it was Asinio Pollione in 39 BC to open it. After the fall of the Roman Empire, it'll be necessary to wait for the Renaissance to see different characters gather manuscripts in what have become the main Italian historical libraries, many of which can be visited by tourists today: the Marciana in Venice, the Estense in Modena, the Malatestiana di Cesena (actually founded by the Franciscan Friars), the Laurenziana in Florence and the Apostolic Library in Rome. Aldo Manuzio, owner of a printing press in Venice on horseback from the 15th and 16th centuries, was practically the first modern publisher, "inventing" the printed book as we know it. Given your pleasure for reading, you can take advantage of this trip to Italy to visit some of its historic libraries.

* Read a book that has book as a theme (a book on the cover, set in a library or bookshop etc.) or read a book with a total page count that includes “39” (intact).

Tari (thann) | 411 comments Hey Jan, for Day 5 Florence real or fictitious royal character, it probably won't work to have a guy that calls himself the Waffle King? Long shot but thought I'd ask :)

What do you think Patrizia??

Tari, you're very creative, but since Palazzo Pitti has been a palace for centuries, I would be more inclined to a character that belongs to a royal family or in any case governs a country... Sorry.

Not a problem at all :) Since this is about as close I ever come to reading about someone being a "king" I wanted to be sure. I'll probably just have to let this one go. Jan, thank you so much for asking her! I saw your reply earlier but had to leave, but yes I agree it was best to leave it up to Patrizia. Thanks again, ladies!

You know what, I totally forgot that! I've got the 2nd level done already with over 15 (16) I think I'll go ahead with the completion post. The last stragglers usually end up being types of books I won't be reading or something I won't find in the ones I do. :)
