Althea mentions that the celebration for Chit is “one of those rare Splenda moments in here. Little imitations of life that, depending on your tastes, can be a kind of substitute for what you’re missing...”

How often do we accept imitations of what we really want or what we’re missing? Are the Splenda moments a form of settling?

I I honestly believe we all have, or have had these moments in our lives.
Going to that BBQ we really didn’t want to show up to because of some of the people who’d be there, but because of the host, we attend anyway. Sitting with “that” group of colleagues, knowing the feeling that they’ve discussed us (not in a pleasant way) while we weren’t at the table.
I don’t look at the Splenda moments as settling moments. I see them more as awkward moments we really wish we’d avoided in the first place. Like: I wished I would’ve just said no. I’d feel so much better sitting at home.
