oshizu | 4925 comments WOMEN OF THE WORLD
Duration: 1 July - 30 September, 2020

In last year's poll to select the group's 2020 yearly theme, "Women of the World" ranked among the top three choices. This quarterly challenge acknowledges the popularity of that theme among our members.

This challenge encourages you to read books in any genre that are authored by women and set in different parts of the globe. The author need not be be a native of the country which is the book's primary setting. Alternative histories and futuristic settings qualify, but not imaginary countries/worlds.

You may choose to read multiple books in a single region or spread your books across different regions. Multiple books set in the same country are allowed; to promote cultural diversity, however, you may only count 2 books set in the country where you live. Feel free to read multiple books set in the same region but a different country from where you live.

If you are uncertain about the geographic affiliation of a particular country, please refer to the United Nations geoscheme

Based on that geoscheme, we are using the five regions below:
🌍 Africa (Northern, Eastern, Middle, Southern, Western Africa)
🌏 Asia (Central, Eastern, Southeastern, Southern, Western Asia)
🌍 Europe (Eastern, Northern, Southern, Western Europe)
🌎 Americas (Caribbean and Central/North/South America)
🌏 Antarctica & Oceania (Antarctica, Australia & New Zealand, Melanesia, Micronesia, Polynesia)

To join this challenge, post to let the challenge leader know how many books you aim to read. If you are new to participating in this group's challenges, please take a moment to check out the Yearly, Quarterly, Monthly Challenges - Start Here thread for more information.

Happy travelling!

Margie will be leading this challenge. Thank you!

If you're up for a cozy mystery series with a protagonist who is a witch, The Celtic Witch series by Molly Milligan is fun and set in Wales. First book is What the Cat Dragged In

Margie | 621 comments Welcome TerryJane! Looks like you have lots of great potential books for your challenge.

Re: Russia - for the purposes of this challenge, I'll use the UN geoscheme subregion country list to track countries we've visited. Although some countries are transcontinental, each country is listed in only one subregion. In this case, Russia is included in the 'Eastern Europe' subregion (which includes northern Asia).

oshizu | 4925 comments IMPORTANT NOTICE

Carol has kindly pointed out that I left out Antarctica when typing up the list of UN Geoschemes (it was a lot of typing!).
Under the UN Geoscheme, Antarctica is grouped with Oceania. If you check this thread's first post, you'll see that the fifth group now reads "Antarctica & Oceania (Australia, New Zealand, Melanesia, Micronesia, Polynesia)." My apologies!

Thanks again, Carol! Happy traveling, everyone!
