Andrea I read this in the '80s or '90s, it was contemporary, so written 1960s-1990s. Setting: US or England, probably US. Probably non-fiction, written by the female therapist/teacher. Setting was probably a school (but maybe a treatment center), there were both indoor and outdoor (playground) scenes. The boy was about 6 years old, maybe semi- or non-verbal.

It's possible this was just a chapter in a book with other stories.

The boy was in some kind of fire, and becomes able to recount memories of the fire through sand play in the outdoor playground. His mother may have been involved in the fire.

Courtney (andforamoment) | 298 comments Torey L. Hayden has written many books about the children she has helped

Rainbowheart | 16086 comments Possibly Murphy's Boy, although the child was a lot older than 6.

If it's not Hayden, could also be Mary MacCracken. Maybe City Kid. Both authors wrote books along the same lines.

Andrea, just to confirm, are you saying one of the suggestions above is your book?
