Jen K | 1226 comments Vern, short for Wyvern or Lord Highfire, is a dragon, possibly the last of his kind and plans to stick around. To that end, he has holed himself up in a shack on an island in the middle of a Louisiana swamp with Absolut Vodka, Flashdance and cable TV to keep him going. He is done with humans and is just trying to stay hidden and safe. He does well hiding out, just dwelling on how humans have done dragons wrong, when he finds an attempted murder at his doorstop. Hooke is a crooked and downright mean cop working for and trying to take over the local mafia. He is taking care of a mafia kill when he realizes that Squib, the kid of the woman he would like to "date", has seen him in action and possibly documented the kill on his phone. Action and adventure ensue as the dragon is forced to interact with Squib and Hooke plans to enact his plan against Squib and the local mob boss.

It is more irreverent humor and action than a real fantasy book with the MC being a dragon being the only real fantasy part. It is funny and fun and a quick read. There are some thoughtful insights into the set of quirky characters as they interact.
