Molly (shakeslove) This book was written by, I think, a woman author. It's from the 1980s-early 1990s and it's contemporary-future in its setting.
It's about a young narrator or two who become friends with a group if teenagers who are politically active. It takes place on a Reservation in a troubled US or what recently was the US. It's a coming of age tale mixed with adolescent fervor and political/cultural issues. It climaxes with an armed clash between the protesters and some govt-sort of forces. I remember at least one of the young people die, possibly crushed by a steam shovel or tank.
I haven't read it in years. But it has stuck with me....memory may be clouding its merit, but I recall thinking it was fairly well written and an intense read.

Molly (shakeslove) great guess -- I'm more than 70% sure this isn't it...but it's a compelling argument.
