Linda C (libladynylindac) | 1053 comments Twelve year old Russell (Rusty) Harry tells the story of his father, Tom Harry, mostly during the year of 1960. There is some backstory at the beginning of his spending his first 6 years with his aunt and uncle in Arizona before his father comes to take him back to Montana. His father is owner and bartender of the Medicine Lodge in Gros Ventre. A very reticent man who parcels out few facts about his life. As things begin to change, new people, and people from the past appear, Rusty is constantly on edge that he will lose his father or the life he has come to love. The characters in the town are very colorful. Bit by bit Rusty finds out about his father. A great story, slow paced and thoughtful. Highly recommend.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 5641 comments I love Ivan Doig's writing. I wish they weren't listed as a "series" though. They are really mostly stand-alone novels, although all set in the fictional Gros Ventre MT.
