Ruth | 1047 comments I think I’m in good company here when I say that I love audiobooks. However, I’m getting a little worried that the dreaded ‘rona is affecting the pipeline of new audio. Two books I have been intending to preorder in audio (both sequels to previous S&L picks) - The Relentless Moon by Mary Robinette Kowal and Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir are still not showing as available to preorder, with no indication of when they might be available.

Has the plague prevented audiobooks from being recorded? Is there some other reason why these books are not yet available for preorder? Anyone have any ideas?

Elizabeth Morgan (elzbethmrgn) | 275 comments Do those books have firm new release dates? By which I mean the hardcopy publication date. The audio might be waiting for plans to be finalised - especially if you're pre-ordering with Audible.

Sheila Jean | 321 comments I'm pretty sure the pandemic is messing up audio book recording. Here's Mary Robinette Kowal showing off her new "recording studio"

Ah, if she’s recording, that’s a good sign! Thanks for sharing.

Yes they’re both coming out this summer in hard copy - The Relentless Moon on 14th July, and Harrow the Ninth on 4th August. But no sign of an audiobook release for either of them.

“What are you doing in the wardrobe?”
“Narnia business.”

FWIW Scalzi's new book wasn't available for pre-order, or if it was it wasn't very far in advance and it still came out on time.

I'd be shocked if this doesn't push some back. Technology is such that narrators can record out of their house, but that doesn't mean they have the required equipment or skill set to do it.

This is reasonably encouraging...!

Louie (rmutt1914) | 881 comments And Neil Gaiman just announced the cast for a new audio recording of Sandman, so... They are definitely still going into production.

Ruth | 1047 comments Update: the audiobook of The Relentless Moon is now scheduled for release on 14th July (Same day as the hardback) and available to preorder on audible (which I have duly done).

Harrow the Ninth is listed on Audible as ‘unavailable’ with no news as to when it might become available. I suspect that MRK has the equipment to record at home, and is obviously anxious to get her own audiobook ready on time, whereas the narrator for Harrow the Ninth (assuming that Moria Quirk does it again) is more likely to have scheduling issues.

Tamahome | 6261 comments All the superhero titles are gone from Graphicaudio for some reason. Some of them are on Audible. You can still hear a sample from Avengers vs. X-men on their main page, and it sounds awesome, but it's gone now: https://www.facebook.com/GraphicAudio... A lot of the tracks have been moved to Audible, the ones narrated by Richard Rohan: https://www.audible.com/search?search... I guess there was some purchasing of the rights.

Elizabeth Morgan (elzbethmrgn) | 275 comments MRK live-streamed the audiobook recording of The Relentless Moon, it's still on her YouTube channel

Edited to add: Looks like the UK market (including Australia/New Zealand) release date is July 14 for Audible, July 20 for Kindle, November 26 for dead tree.

Serendi | 832 comments It's supposed to remain up until the US version comes out on July 14. I'm a little over halfway through - really cool!

Tamahome | 6261 comments Aww, you can see her face. It's somehow comforting, and ballsy of her to do it. Maybe I'll put her on my tv while I'm trying to sleep. Perhaps in the future, all audiobooks will follow this format, lol. I haven't read this series, and this is the third one. Too bad there's no puppets though.

Ooo she designed a mask: https://twitter.com/MaryRobinette/sta...
