I imagine the book was from the 60's possible even the 80's
It was a scary short story. We would check it out often from the Kent Washington Public library, I may ask them for a list of these types of books if that is possible.

Looks like it was actually published when we were reading it, in 1997

A favorite anthology of fairy tales my sister and I read when we were young.
The story I am looking for is a spin off of the Boarded Window by Ambrose Pierce. In this version a traveler comes to an abode (maybe a stone tower?) and stays the night. He finds an old man there that is much younger than he looks and a boarded window. The man will not discuss the window or why it is boarded but refused to allow the traveler to open it. I believe the old man dies in the night and the traveler spends some time considering opening the window, and then does. Strange noises pour out of a place that is different than outside the front door, and his dog (he has a hound) hears a noise and jumps through the window! ghastly noises and screeches are heard and the dog will not return no matter how the traveler screams for him. He resolves to go out the window, there is a hill coming all the way up to it and he stumbles down it. He is gone for some time and the reader remains in the tower not going with. When he comes back he is tormented, older... much older. He boards the window shut. I believe his dog is lost.
