Hi, guys, I had the pleasure of reading City of Masks and can say without hesitation that it's worth the read. I really enjoyed it, and I wouldn't say that just because Ashley and I are digital friends...I'd say nothing at all if I didn't really, really like it.
If you like fantasy, it's a great story.

Excerpt from the Journal of Clayton Stone – 1692 She was examined today without torture at Shadow Cove township on the charge of witchcraft. She said she was wholly innocent of the crime and has never in life renounced God. I watched as they brought her out. A poor, sickly thing, worn by her time behind the walls of her prison. Her bared feet and hands bound in leather, her clothing tattered to that of ruin. Despite such condition, her head was held high, her eyes meeting those of her accusers. She still refuses to provide her name so we remain unable to search baptismal records, nor has her family stepped forward to claim her as their own. We have no reason to believe she is anything but an orphaned child. I find myself unable to look at her directly in the moments preceding her trial. She is watching me though; with eyes of the deepest blue, she is watching me.

Ok, got another recommendation for the thread - it's one I've made in other places I think, but I love the book so I always end up recommending it no matter where I am :D

The Wind Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami - easily my fav surrealist/magical-realism writer, and one of his best works, I reckon.

Although, his 'wild sheep chase' is a little shorter and is probably a nice intro to his style too :)

I'm up to date on both sets. My personal opinion is that the Dresden Files is a bit of a mixed bag in terms of quality. Some books take longer to develop, but the pay offs are worth it. The Codex series builds throughout the entire series, and is a little more consistent in terms of quality.

The Dresden Files will too...on the 23rd book.

Ashley: Yes and reread at least once...except for GHOST STORY. It's too damned slow in pace, compared to the books that come before AND after, especially SKIN GAME.

Although vampire stories are not my usual read, I found Dissonant to be unique and very well written. Christina McMullen is without doubt an accomplished author, writing at a professional level, and turning out stories that keep you reading and looking forward to the next one. Dissonant is a shortish novel, or longish novelette, that begins the "Eyes Of The Sun" series. A complete story on its own, it nevertheless provides a compelling hook leading into the next book in the series. This is the second book I've read by Christina McMullen, the other being a light-hearted and entertaining zombie story titled Going Green and in both I found her writing to be fresh and entertaining. I rate this one at 4 1/2 out of 5 stars, rounding up to 5.

Here's one paragraph from my review:
The writing is so descriptive that I could picture the small town that the main character, Amy, found herself in. The writing style melded with the world that the author painted, and I could sense the sultry/lusty/gritty air on every page. There's a description of a black silk dress that was so exquisitely done that I could see the woman moving across the floor. I love it when writing is so thick and rich that I can sink my eyes into it for a long, savory bite.

and loved it! It's high fantasy, and the author's use of words is simply magical. Book 2 in the series just came out, and I can't wait to get my hands on it!

I recently read The Crossing Hour. I love sci-fi and historical fiction, so I found this blending of two genres fascinating. For a debut novel, the quality of the writing and editing is impressive.
