I have heard a lot of people loved it and hand full hated it. Others are like me in the middle.
Good point on holding breath. It took him six years to continue The Dresden Files Series.
I've been waiting for the sequel for a long time too! I enjoyed this but yes, it's full of a lot of details and can be a bit confusing, but I liked the world-building and gave it 4 stars.
I gave it 3 stars too - some fabulous imaginative world building and a couple of interesting characters, plus I liked the politics, but it fell flat or dragged in too many places. I listened to it on audio which didn’t help - the narrator did a good job, I thought, but the rhythm of the writing didn’t really suit reading aloud

3 stars
Taken from the back of the book. "Captain Grimm commands the merchant ship Predator. Loyal to Spire Albion, he has taken their side in the cold war with Spire Aurora, disrupting the enemy's shipping lines by attacking their cargo vessels. But when Predator is damaged in combat, Grimm joins a team of Albion agents on a vital mission exchange for fully restoring his ship."
The beginning of the book pulled me into the fast paced book but it just did not keep my attention at all times, I had no problem putting it down. First problem, to much unnecessary details during the fight scenes, and describing things like ships equipment. Second problem, to many characters that are undeveloped. Last big problem, I also missing background stories, without them I felt like I was missing out of why things happened the way they did.
I do like Jim Butcher's adventures and writing style but for my taste needs to be edited a little more, book was longer than it needed to be.
Here is a couple of quotes from the book that I think set the tone.
"When Predator sailed onto war, she sang"
"The bloodstains on the walls glistened in the light of the little table's lumin crystals."
As much as I found this book tedious to read, I will finish the series.
