Choko (chokog) | 12600 comments Brian, Bob is just explaining how many different types of werewolves are there. I really like Bob!

The one thing that makes Harry's job so difficult, actually they are two, is that he has to keep the secret of the "others", and two, he can't use magical means to kill folks, even in self defense, if I got it correctly last book. So like when (view spoiler)

Choko (chokog) | 12600 comments Harry Dresden #2 - man, Harry is just going to get himself killed, or at least make his life much more difficult by openly standing against Marconi and rattling his chain... But good for him!

message 404: by Brian (new)

Brian | 1681 comments Finished Dresden #2.. Pretty good books and I thought the narrator does a nice job with the characters. I will definitely continue so let me know when you want to start book 3 Choko. I'm going to finish Age of Empyre so should finish up this week.

message 405: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments James Marsten grows as a narrator and the Butcher grows as an author with this series. lol

At this point, I can't imagine anyone else ever narrating Harry. It's gotta be Marsten.

message 406: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12600 comments I am 80% in Dresden#2... I already see that Butcher likes to put his characters through the ringer... I mean Harry could have been killed or died of his wounds bunches of times already. And I totally didn't see (view spoiler)

message 407: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12600 comments I finished Harry Dresden #2.

I liked it a lot. I know everyone is saying these books are not as good as the ones that follow, but I find them just fine. He does get down to the last moment to put everything together, but I like how he thinks. I think it is perfect for what it is. Maybe he is still looking for a cohesive direction for the series as a whole, but I am sure he will find his groove. From this whole book, the one thing that kind of grossed me out was (view spoiler) I am excited to continue with the series. Brian, how about next weekend for book 3?

Mouse is the best. =)

message 411: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12600 comments We haven't met Mouse yet, or at least not by name. I am very happy we are reading this series (✷‿✷)(✷‿✷)(人 •͈ᴗ•͈)

message 412: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments It should be in the next book. Puppies! =D

I think. Hmm. Funny how it all blurs together. *goes to look at book blurbs*

This is another reason why I should write more in depth reviews. HAHAHAH! But I'm trying to only write when I feel moved to do it vs making myself do it.

*comes back from internet black hole*

You will love Mouse! But apparently talked about him way too soon. lol

Ya'll can haze over Mouse and my excitement. Haha

message 413: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12600 comments Ha-ha-ha-ha! It is hard to remember which book what character shows up. I could never do it, since long series like this one tend to blur the book lines once you get deeper into the timeline... It is amazing you remember as much as you do!!!

message 414: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12600 comments Soo, I just started Faite Falling #01 - Ugly Girl ...
This is forming up to be a contemporary 20ish new adult alternative magic world, Avalon in this case, and Rose Avalon is the main character. She is 22 years old, best friend is a college student who likes to read and both are kind of outcast. She has a talent of talking with animals. She is supposed to be taking her finals, but some weird changes are happening to her and someone is trying to abduct her.... This is the basics, I am up to 20% in... We will see how it goes and if we will be interested in continuing... The whole series is on KU, so there is nothing to lose^_^

message 415: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments The upside for Mary Twomey books are that they are all on KU! =D

Though, I do plan on buying the books at some point if I love it. Like, I bought the two bundles of Terraway and when the last bundle for it appears, I'll get that to have the whole series.

I'm currently reading Wandering Inn Vol5. I'll either sneak Ugly Girl in tonight or try to trade chapters. Well, Wandering Inn chapters are way longer but ya know, it would get me to read both. Bwahahahha

message 416: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12600 comments I need, need to start the Wondering Inn eventually! But we have been tackling such cool series this year, I have been mostly binging those...

I bought the Terraway series too. I had to. It drove me crazy, but in a fun way, and I wanted to support the author. I always try to support the authors whom I enjoy, but are not that popular and don't have many reviews. I like doing that....

message 417: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12600 comments Faite Falling #01 - 31% in...

(view spoiler)

message 418: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Wandering Inn Vol2 audiobook is out. It was a mixed bag to listen to. I thought I would love it but Vol2 has a lot more plot development stuff happening and the format for some of it works in print but doesn't sound great to hear.

Parsneau definitely made 80% of it more fun to listen to the story but there was a distinct portion that was just better to read. I had read Vol2 already so it was a refresher.

message 419: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12600 comments Awesome! Thank you for letting me know. I will get the Kindle addition...

message 420: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Wandering Inn - Read it on the website and buy the audiobooks to support the author. I don't think the Kindle version is worth buying. Author corrects on website before everything else.

Plus, if you read it on the website, you can see the comments. Pirate Aba usually posts a comment to chat about stuff. Usually it's the 1st post. Sometimes it's not.

message 421: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12600 comments Great! I will do that then. Thank you!

message 422: by Narilka (new)

Narilka | 5814 comments I started Joe Ledger #2 this morning. It's likely going to take me all of August to complete, my audio listening has dropped dramatically. I'll try to post weekly.

6 chapters in and looks like we're on a countdown to extinction :D That family of bad guys are creepy!

message 423: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12600 comments Faite Falling # 01 - I just finished it. It was a start and I found it entertaining enough. I do think that she gets too chummy too fast, just as combative at the littlest thing. Its a contemporary story, but in a Fae world with kind of game feel to it and I can't stop imagining Rosie as Snow-white from the Disney movies, with the animals and talking with them and all(*_*)(+_+)(*_*). Soo, your tern to see what you think:-).

message 424: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Narilka, there are some wacko bad guys in Joe Ledger. =)

Choko, I'll catch up! I'm almost near the end of Wandering Inn Vol5. Can't stop now! lol

message 425: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12600 comments Soo, girl, I am not worried about you catching up ever!!! You read at the speed of light and I am glad I got to catch up on some things while you are finishing up your book (✷‿✷)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Random Thought & Request

I'm getting close to 666 for the books read count on GR. I think it will be hilariously awesome to read a scary/spooky/horror/etc story for 666th book.

I need some book recs! What should I read for 666th book?

2020 will go down as the year I read the most books in my life. LOL

I think I may start writing this winter. If that happens, my reading will slow down even more. I need to think about what kind of stories I want to write. Practice writing again and etc etc.

message 429: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Choko, I do have Ugly Girl lined up to read but I'm still neck deep in Wandering Inn. One of the larger story arcs was completed in Vol5. I totally teared up and trickled teary sobs during some of the story. Whew! Emotional turmoil of Wandering Inn. Heh

I probably won't read a different print book until the end of Vol6 or if I run into a POV I can't stand. Will see what happens.

message 430: by Brian (new)

Brian | 1681 comments PLEASE write a book! You read 1 million books a week so you should have ample time 😁 and we know you know what works in a book and what doesn’t based on your awesome reviews.

message 431: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Thanks for the vote of confidence, Brian! XD

Knowing how a story works does not mean you know how to pull a story together to make a great story. lol

Plus, I'll be my worst critic, so nothing I write will ever be actually good enough. The biggest hurdle will be to write something that other people can understand and something I think it pretty good.

Depending on the point of the story, I'll have to work on:
- writing a story that the reader can interpret & get what I think/see/feel
- I can be super wordy. Need to work on when it's a good paragraph and when to chop it down to the bones.
- When to stop editing & rearranging, I may want perfection but it's hard to do that in writing. So, I'll need to work on stopping when it's good. My standard for good is rather high.

... Ugh, so many reasons why I may never make it as a writer. Hahahahah

I know I can write. I just have to do it. At least once and then many times over. LoL

For sure... the early Dresden books are a bit rough, especially the very first one... the 2nd one is a big step up, in my opinion, with all the mythologies already starting to layer on...

You basically summed up the series in a nutshell... survive by the skin of his teeth, and assemble tools to make it easier next time...

Like I said elsewhere, the structure of the book being non-linear kinda annoyed me... and the side story is random... i hear there's a part 2 to that side story in volume 7 (the current volume, whichever that one is)

message 438: by Soo (last edited Aug 03, 2020 11:45AM) (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Wandering Inn:

The starting point for the series is:

Can you have a non-combative main character, that seems to have no particular skill set and create an epic story?

Honestly, I couldn't stand Erin for most of Volume 1. I fell into the reader trap of thinking about her as a simple character. She's not.

She's not a Warrior but she's not afraid to fight. That's one of her strengths.

Back to the Question of the story premise:
I can say that you can because WI is definitely an epic.

Side Note: I think it's interesting that the author doesn't consider her series as a LitRPG. Especially with the world setting of skills and leveling as part of the core story points.

It's not game mechanics heavy, but there's an element of it there. It's probably better to label as Gamelit vs LitRPG. The characters are not role playing within a game.

Wandering Inn Chapters - I'm really glad the author uses abbreviations on the chapters to show (kind of) which POVs will be in the chapter. The world that she has created is huge and there are lots of moving parts.

I was also annoyed by the POV, time and etc changes that happen willy nilly. Then I got used to it. It's rather fascinating to think about the writing/engagement setup of the web serial. Reader interactions are a heavy factor in how the story rolls out. The author may be the one creating the bones and fleshing out the stories but there's a TON of reader influence in the writing & some of the pacing.

Personally, I don't think I would want that in my writing process. Though, I may try it out to see what it would be like.

My biggest pet peeves with WI:
- Inconsistencies in Time Line
- Canon story elements changing (There's a few. Just rant & ignore.)
- Random jumps in POV/flashbacks/etc (Though, this is a good way to stay out of writer's block.)
- Grammar/Format

message 439: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Wandering Inn - So, the beginning is rough but totally worth getting into.

I think we should start up a thread for it or post in the existing WI thread.

Iain, can you make time to read & listen to it?

Once I finish Vol6. I'm not going to touch Vol7 until it's finished. I don't think it'll be done until maybe next year? Depends on how long Vol7 ends up being but I'm gonna guess it'll end up around 70-80 chapters and it's about halfway to that now.

There's a lot that can be enjoyed and talked over about this series. Hm. I highly recommend reading on the website because of the author comments. Other people's comments, I don't read that much. I do like the fan art. Some of it is great. Others are eh.

message 440: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 36268 comments Mod
I'd like to make time for reading, but I struggle... much easier to make time to listen... but if I don't read, I probably will always be behind on the story... considering how much Pirate Aba has written so far, and the inevitable year between audiobooks...

Erin has definitely proven herself as a character... it's kinda hard to consider her non-combative by the end of book 2, lol... even if she tries to avoid conflict... I love how her successes surprise all the other races...

message 441: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Think about the actual fighters like Relc, Klb, Captain Z, etc. They focus on fighting and magic, etc. Erin focuses on taking care of people and fun. Which is why she runs an inn, cooks, etc.

I LOVE the epic parties that have happened and it's hilarious how band/orchestra music magically plays as Erin sings, etc.

Priateaba releases 2 chapters a week. She takes a week break when she needs it and a week or two when a Volume is completed. So, potential for 100 chapters in a year. Ooo, if she sticks to schedule, she can write a Volume per year and take breaks.

I don't think the 3rd audio will be released in a year because there's no kindle for Vol3. I think the author releases the Kindle version once most of the "editing" has been done. Then they would need to make sure PA has time to record it. I wonder if it takes 3-5 weeks for a narrator to record 46 hours. Maybe it's just 3 weeks? You have to have time to fix mistakes, make sure the character voices are correct and bad sound bites to be taken out & redone.

I'm hopeful for audio releases because even tho Amazon doesn't have the 3rd book, Audible has listings for book 3 AND 4

message 443: by Brian (new)

Brian | 1681 comments Dresden* I’m on Book 4 now and am loving the characters and series. Way better than book 1 and 2. My only complaint is the narrator (Marsten). He’s got a great voice and does good with the characters. BUT....the mouth noises between sentences drives me crazy!!!! Not sure if it’s an editing issue or what and it’s not always constant. The biggest complaint on Audible were the mouth noises and since I read them it’s all I can hear. Lol. I might have to continue on print if it keeps up.

message 444: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Marsten may have done the audio production himself. I don't remember when the audio quality becomes good across the board but it happens at some point. LoL

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Wandering Inn Vol6

Man oh man! There are so many times when I want to poke Iain or Choko or somebody and go: Look at what happened in WI!!!

Most of them are funny parts and a few sad bits.

I'm almost done with Vol6 and I may read Vol7. Even though I know I'll get annoyed when I catch up to the current chapter and have to wait for the next release. Then again, maybe I'll figure out a good stopping point and read Vol7 until that spot?

I JUST WANT THE TITAN TO MEET ERIN!! Is that too much to ask!?!! It may be happening in Vol7. It's such a huge teaser. Geez.

**Wandering Inn**

So many flaws but not enough of a detraction to keep me from enjoying the good parts. The writer created a whole world, races and history, etc. She's trying to share all of that within one series. It's a lot but more cool than boo-worthy. =)
