Hi dear members,
I'm very excited to announce that I've created a reading-challenge: 2015 RMFAO Genre Challenge.
Every year we all think of reading atleast one book from all the genres but as the year progresses everything changes. This challenge will help you make sure that you read all the major genres in 2015.

Genre list for each month:
January- Science-Fiction
February- Crime/Mystery
March- Romance
April- Young Adult
May- Classics/Literary
June- Non-Fiction
July- Dystopian/Apocalyptic
August- Contemporary
September- Humour
October- Horror
November- Historical
December- Adventure/Fantasy

Rules:
1. Only members can participate.
2. You have to read atleast 1 book each month for respective genre (as per above list.)
3. You have to select a level (from the list below) and make an announcement here as well as your blog (if you have one.)

Levels:
Level 1: Casual Reader: 1 book (easy)
Level 2: Frequent Reader: 2 books (moderate)
Level 3: Bookworm: 3 books (mildly strenuous)
Level 4: Bibliophile: 4 books (strenuous)
Level 5: Bookiopath: 5 books or more (challenging)

Please mention what type of books you'll read:
PB: paperback
EB: e-Book
PB-EB: paperback and e-book

Notes:
1. Take your time and go through your entire TBR-list before deciding the books to read.
2. You can join the challenge at any point of time.
3. You can drop out of the challenge any time you like.
4. You can select different levels every month.
5. Use this discussion board to share your reads with other members of the group.

Have a wonderful evening!

In Science-Fiction I'll be reading Dune Messiah, Children Of Dune and also the 3 books that'll be selected for RMFAO January'15 read-along.
In Young Adult I'll be reading the Divergent series and hopefully Bloodline series.
Rest I'll have to think!

message 3: by Chris (new)

Chris Quinn Hmm, I don't think I'd even know where to begin with romance. Everything else is no problem (although I tend to just categorise YA as it's top level genre, mostly sci-fi or fantasy). Sounds fun though :)

I feel the same way about romance. Just like YA, it's so broad and needs further categorization. I definitely won't be reading any Harlequin or Mills & Boon books. LOL

I might take up this challenge, and have something on my TBR list for each category except romance. I'll probably reread A Boy And His Dog by Harlan Ellison to cover that one. ;)

L. Shosty Chris wrote: "Hmm, I don't think I'd even know where to begin with romance. Everything else is no problem (although I tend to just categorise YA as it's top level genre, mostly sci-fi or fantasy). Sounds fun tho..."

I don't think I could do bodice-rippers or the like, but I could probably stomach a paranormal romance. Also, I would imagine these categories are up for interpretation. For instance, some folks might not consider The Witches of Eastwick as fantasy since it's written by an author typically connected with contemporary fiction and is usually shelved there with his other work, and others might see it as fantasy largely based on its content.

message 6: by L. (new)

L. Shosty I know my challenge for 2015 is to get my Kindle reading under control. I have a house full of books that have become neglected since buying my Paperwhite last January. I'm going to do this challenge as well, but I'm limiting myself to one ebook for every paperback I read.

message 7: by Steve (new)

Steve | 208 comments Here's my projected list:
January (Sci-Fi): Willful Child and Maze
February (Mystery): The Hitman's Lover and The Black Dahlia
March (Romance): Loco and The Beautiful Land
April (YA): Shutter and Dare Me
May (Classics): The Grapes of Wrath and Oliver Twist
June (Non-Fiction): Under a Flaming Sky: The Great Hinckley Firestorm of 1894 and Spies, Patriots, and Traitors
July (Dystopian): A Canticle for Leibowitz and Containment
August (Contemporary): Fourth of July Creek and Maximum Bob
September (Humor): Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers and Double Whammy
October (Horror): Nyctophobia andPandemonium
November (Historical): Harvest and Winter at Death's Hotel
December (Fantasy): The Princess Bride and The Dinosaur Lords

I'll also be reading some of the RFMAO read-alongs, and I'd like to tackle the entire 10-book Mazalan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erickson in 2015 (some light reading, I know).

Thanks everyone!
The plan is to keep the genres simple and keep a lot of room for interpretations. I don't wanna pile on the readers by specifying the sub-genres or by being too specific about the categories. I've assigned genre in the broader sense so that the readers can decide for themselves.
For example, Vampire Academy comes in Romance, Fantasy and Young Adult. So it's upto the reader to read it under any of the three categories.

More than half of the readers participate in a dozen challenges and that's the reason I wanna keep this one easy so that everyone can easily combine this one with other challenges.
As such this is the first yearly-challenge for RMFAO. So maybe we can raise the bar by specifying sub-genres next year (2016) :)

I hope everyone participates, so that we call all talk lots and lots of books :D

To make it fun, I'm gonna complete this challenge for paperbacks as well as e-books. That'll really balance out the ebook:paperback ratio... ;)

Also I have a lot of Netgalley books... I'll read them for e-books. My kindle paper-white, Ned Stark (yes, I name my gadgets!), will be really happy now :D

I still need some time to figure out mine and after seeing your list I'm really inspired!

I'm so glad that you'll be participating in RMFAO's read-alongs :D
Thanks Steve!

Steve | 208 comments Heena wrote: "Wow, Brilliant..."

I actually have a complete reading plan for 2015,which started as a result of this challenge. For now, I'm projecting 50 books (almost 25000 pages!): the 24 books listed above, the entire Malazan Fallen series (10 books), and an additional 16 books that I've been putting off for a while. This doesn't include any of the Netgalley books I need to review, short stories, or graphic novels, which will fill in all of my reading time. I'll also be listening to audiobooks every day during my drive to and from work.

I guess that makes me a "bookiopath". :D

Titas | 98 comments I think I will switch myself off for March and April :P

message 15: by Chris (new)

Chris Quinn Sci-fi is easy, it's what I would be mostly reading anyway :)

For January, I will go with:
Cloud Atlas EB
The Forever War EB
Vengeful Spirit HB
Star Wars: A New Dawn HB
Doctor Who: Silhouette HB

I'm sure there will be more stuff I'll just pick up anyway, random 40K or Doctor Who stuff.

OK, I'm in! I debated a long while since there's a few genres I don't read. But I finally decided that's the nature of the challenge, so I'll go with it.

Level One across the board for me and probably they will all be paperbacks except the Classics might be an e-book. I am always reading a classic for a couple of groups I'm in and they're often e-books.

Just checked the poll, if it is the science fiction poll - great classics, but I've already read the top four.

HAww! Sorry to hear that Steve! I hope your next pick is something that you'll enjoy (or else just pick up a book that you know you'll like, something light!)
I'm also having a bit of trouble through my reads, though I'm liking the books, still I'm like I've again got READER's BLOCK! I'm reading barely 20 pages per day from last week! New year was supposed to be good for reading, isin't it!!!
Let us know what are you planning to read next :)
