1. Delaware - The First State
The state was named after the Delaware River. Delaware is home to the World Championship Punkin Chunkin. The state is divided into three counties; New Castle, Kent, and Sussex. The first governor (president) of Delaware was John McKinly. He was born in Ireland and was a doctor.

2. Pennsylvania - The Keystone State
Pennsylvania came into being in 1681 as a result of a royal land grant to William Penn, the son of the state's namesake. Independence Hall, where the United States Declaration of Independence and United States Constitution were drafted, and the Liberty Bell are located in the state's largest city of Philadelphia. Lancaster County was the original home to the Amish. The world's first commercial oil well was drilled in 1859 in Titusville by Edwin Drake. The most serious nuclear accident in the history of American nuclear-power industry occurred at the Three Mile Island plant, near Harrisburg, in 1979.

3. New Jersey - The Garden State
The state was named for the island of Jersey in the English Channel. New Jersey is home to the Statue of Liberty. The game, Monopoly, is based on streets in Atlantic City. In 1978 Congress passed legislation to designate 1.1 million acres (4,500 km2; 1,700 sq mi) of the Pine Barrens as the Pinelands National Reserve (the nation's first National Reserve) to preserve its ecology. In 1993 Republican Christine Todd Whitman became the first female governor of New Jersey.

4. Georgia - The Peach State
Colonized in 1732 by James Edward Oglethorpe, Georgia was the last of the original thirteen English colonies. Coca-Cola was invented in May 1886 by Dr. John S. Pemberton in Atlanta, Georgia. The Varsity in Atlanta is the world's largest drive-in fast food restaurant. The annual Masters Golf Tournament is played at the Augusta National in Augusta every first week of April.

5. Connecticut - The Constitution State
Now called "the Father of Connecticut," Thomas Hooker was a towering figure in the early development of colonial New England. He was one of the great preachers of his time, an erudite writer on Christian subjects, and the first minister of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Connecticut River, Thames River, and ports along the Long Island Sound have given Connecticut a strong maritime tradition which continues today. The state also has a long history of hosting the financial services industry, including insurance companies in Hartford and hedge funds in Fairfield County. In 1875, the first telephone exchange in the world was established in New Haven.

Plymouth was the site of the first colony in New England and the first Thanksgiving, founded in 1620 by the Pilgrims, passengers of the Mayflower. In 1692, the town of Salem and surrounding areas experienced one of America's most infamous cases of mass hysteria, the Salem witch trials.

7. Maryland - "Old Line State"
As one of the original Thirteen Colonies of Great Britain, Maryland was founded by George Calvert, a Catholic convert who sought to provide a religious haven for Catholics persecuted in England. In 1632, Charles I of England granted Calvert a colonial charter, naming the colony after his wife, Queen Mary (Henrietta Maria of France).
During the War of 1812, the British military attempted to capture Baltimore, which was protected by Fort McHenry. During this bombardment the song "Star Spangled Banner" was written by Francis Scott Key; it was later adopted as the national anthem.

South Carolina is named in honor of King Charles I of England, who first formed the English colony, with Carolus being Latin for "Charles".
Early in the 20th century, South Carolina developed a thriving textile industry. The state also converted its agricultural base from cotton to more profitable crops; attracted large military bases through its powerful Democratic congressional delegation, part of the one-party South following disfranchisement of blacks at the turn of the century; and created tourism industries.

On December 17, 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright successfully piloted the world's first controlled, sustained flight of a powered, heavier-than-air aircraft at Kill Devil Hills in North Carolina's Outer Banks.
