Em had brought her swimsuit, but it lay woefully ignored, lying pitifully on a lounge chair, among other things. She had forgotten about it all, her bare feet creating artificial waves in the pool that was unnaturally aquamarine, too pretty, too clean, another way to remind Em that she did not belong. She liked it better-- her and shards of glass. She had once been sand, once been gritty and everywhere and incorrigible, but she was not hiding it, unlike almost all the others here.
She was lost in thought, the waves cascading spires of light on her face, reflecting shimmering blue that refused to stay still. Her dress was loose, freeing, and her hair was also loose, and in her physical freedom, she felt, to some degree, the amount of restriction she was still under. But it was nothing. Echoes of nothingness rang in her ears and all her eyes saw was water too blue, but it was calm, and she could breathe, so she was content.

(view spoiler)Lilia walked into the pool area from inside, free for once that day from her family, the selected, and most thankfully, meddling guards. She set down her towel and notebook on an empty lounge chair near the deep end of the pool. After pulling her dress off to reveal a rose and blue swim suit, Lilia noticed a Selected sitting by the edge of the pool, and unfortunately, got a wicked idea. Lilia stood by the side of the pool, not acknowledging the other girl. Suddenly, she jumped into the air, diving into the pool. Instead of diving straight in, she changed it to a cannonball last second and water splashed everywhere, despite her small weight.
As Lilia surfaced the water, she brushed her hair back from her face and saw that the Selected was completely soaked. Lilia laughed as she climbed out next to her, but didn't feel sorry as she said it. "I'm sorry about that. I couldn't resist."
Em gave a sunny smile but didn't bother to laugh as she looked up at the princess. "I don't think anyone could have. I was practically begging to be soaked," She replied dryly as she stood up and went behind the changing wall, grabbing her swimsuit and changing into it before diving into the pool. The pool was warmer than it had seemed when her feet had been dipped it and she took a second to relax, letting herself float on her back with the gentle current, eyes wide open, staring at the high, vaulted ceiling before turning to the girl besides her. She wasn't a selected, and she wasn't one of the royal Shreaves, which meant she was most likely a cousin. It was a little too late for proper manners now, but judging from the girl's cannonball, manners were not something this princess concerned herself with, and Em could tell from the laughter in her eyes that there was a natural prejudice against the Selected.
Em was fine with that.

Lilia laughed again. She may not have known much-or rather, anything- about this girl, but if Perry didn't choose someone like this, Lilia would for him. Well, that is, if he lives. Again the thoughts of Perry, lying sick and dying in a hospital bed, crashed into Lilia and stunned her for a second. She had not exactly forgotten, but had pushed the thoughts back into the depths of her mind to die it. But now that she had allowed herself to think about him, everything that had happened in the last few hours rushed back to her and she frowned.
"It sucks," Emerson said suddenly, eyes opening, tone casual, but she could tell from the sickly change in the air this was the first time the princess had experienced loss and the feeling was so new that even though she tried to contain it, it leaked out, sulfurous, poisonous. No I'm sorrys or it's okay came from Em. Em did not comment on how she had been there, how it was her fault, how she had chosen a one piece because there were ten scars right above her hip bone that would have drawn questions-- she did not offer the princess any information, only acknowledged that she knew, and that, in an odd sense, was comfort in itself.
Lilia was at first confused about what the girl was talking about, then realized that Lilia was doing a pretty terrible job at trying to conceal her emotions. "Oh. Yeah, it does." Lilia doubted this girl had even met Perry more than once, but she asked her this question anyway. You never know how fast rumors and other things-such as true stories-fly around the castle, now even more because of the selected along with the maids and guards gossiping. "Do you know what happened to him? Like, why he's like this?"
"Alexa Lambert tried to kill him, and in the process, she obtained a stab wound to the wrist as well as one right below the stomach. No major arteries were ruptured, but a major nerve in the wrist was hit so it'll take the better part of a year for her to feel anything in her left hand." Em was being careless, but might as well. Her tone was casual, as if she were talking about what she had for dinner the night before, but also detached, her face and eyes giving away at nothing. "The selected don't know yet, so I suggest you do a better job at faking happiness until word gets out or someone's bound to get suspicious."
Lilia was surprised at this answer. "Really? A Selected…she did this to Perry?" She was shocked. This girl…most likely a rebel, a Southern rebel, if she was one. She had attempted to murder Perry. He hadn't done anything to her, not at all, yet this girl had tried to kill her cousin. ((Sorry for the short post))
"Don't be so quick to blame-- your uncle gave the command for her father's death. She was human, she wanted revenge. Blood of a loved one for the blood of a loved one." The deceptively innocent smile, innocent eyes which shined with something otherworldly was smooth, no cracks to be found. Her tone was still light, but the words were heavy enough. Em left herself out of this-- the princess would find out eventually, but for now, ignorance would be bliss, for them both.
"Wait," Lilia said, ignoring what the selected had just spoken. "You said none of the other girls knew about how this happened. How did you know?" Lilia had already guess, assuming this girl had been there, as well. ((Gtg, I'll post when I get back from dance))
"I don't count myself as Selected-- I count myself as lucky, lucky and dispensible." Em replied with a sunny smile, her self-deprecating wit biting, but also somehow good humored. It was not a pity party sort of humor, simply matter-of-fact and blunt, contradicing the girl's nonchalance and light toned ways. Em hadn't really answered the question, but perhaps she didn't need to. She had already given the girl enough information. "I think I mentioned that Alexa emerged with a stab wound to the stomach and the wrist?"
Lilia looked at her suspiciously, but dropped the topic quickly after. Instead of trying to talk to this girl at the moment, Lilia just stood up and dove into the pool, staying down as long as she could before having to come up to breath. "So, what's your name, anyway?"((So sorry for the short posts :/ ))
"Emerson." She ignored the girl's literal escape from the topic. If they wanted to pretend it had never happened, it was fine with her. The less the princess knew, the happier she would be. If Lilia thought this was grief, then Em was sorry-- the helplessness, the rage, the nights spent chewing fingernails down to a bloody pulp as you asked why, why, why had not come yet. And hopefully, they would never come. They needed more people who knew how to retain true innocence-- people who did not converse in sunny smiles and ambiguous words or deadpan faces and sardonic comments. There were enough Eights in this country.
"Emerson. Well, guess I have to say it's nice to meet you, so, it's nice to meet you, Emerson." Lilia climbed up from the water and walked over to where her things were. She grabbed her towel and wrapped it around herself, mostly letting the sun coming through the glass dry her wet hair and bathing suit. As she say back down next to her, she wasn't really sure why she did or what to say, but didn't really care either way.
"Don't waste your breath. I like hearing your empty words about as much as you like saying them," Em replied with another sunny smile and no offense or ill-humor in her voice. She could swim a few laps, most definitely, but this was the first time in sixteen years Em had had a true chance to be lazy, and she reveled in it. Her ways were contradictions, rough and smooth, glass and steel, she knew, but at the moment, with the pool slowly aging her toes and fingers, the sunlight on her face, it somehow seemed to meld again.
