"A work of remarkable genius by the National Book Award-winning author of "Let the Great World Spin", focussing on the friendship forged in loss between two men on either side of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Two fathers, each of whom has tragically lost a young daughter. The Israeli, Rami’s teenage daughter was killed by a suicide bomber and the Palestinian, Bassam’s 10-year-old daughter was fatally shot by the Israeli army. The book is a fictionalized telling of their relationship, their grief, notions of conflict and notions of peace. It is brilliantly told with a mesmerizing structure of 1001 short yet gripping chapters which chop up their tellings, weaving in side stories about art, history, philosophy and culture, digressions which make reading it a haunting kaleidoscopic experience. Reading this after reading "Say Nothing" last week, the book about the Irish troubles, I found the two books really speak to each other. I don't always agree with this book. But I was blown away by it and its humanity, nobility, poetry and brilliance; and you will be too."
