I think the real issue of colonizing Mars will depend on whether terraforming its atmosphere (to get it 'working' again) is possible in the future. Unless a colony can generate enough food and water to be self-sustaining, or travel to Earth and Mars becomes the equivalent of a plane ride across the Atlantic, a Mars colony would always be dependent upon Earth as the 'parent' society and that type of relationship has never settled well with humans in general throughout history. Or in the future, if you have watched "The Expanse." ;)
