Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments What Stephen King have you read? Or have you just seen his movies and TV shows?

message 3: by Max (new)

Max | 15 comments I have read 11/22/63

Nancy (paper_addict) | 942 comments Is that the only Stephen King book you have read?

I read The Shining before the movie came out when I was 14. Back then all I read was scary books and I thought this was a scary book. So if you don’t like scary books, this might not be for you. It is nothing like 11/22/63.

Charles | 96 comments I am not generally a believer in censorship. If you are of the age where you can understand that art is meant to strengthen us and not meant to harm us, and you aren't mentally susceptible, then I believe you should read read/watch/listen to, whatever you want to. If during those experiences, it becomes too much, then just stop at that point. I have 2 Children, 17 and 13, and by using this method, they have always self regulated and generally stay away from "extreme" content on their own. With that being said, The Shining is no less "inappropriate" that 11.22.63.

Nancy (paper_addict) | 942 comments There was another boy about your age that came on here last year asking about SK book recommendation for his age. Maybe he will come by and give you his opinion or you can PM him and see if he replies.

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments I thought the scene were the step father (or whatever he was) comes back to kill the kids in 11/22/63 was damn scary. Anyway, I agree with Charles, and - IMHO - there's nothing really too inappropriate in The Shining.

Kandice | 4387 comments The Eyes of the Dragon
From a Buick 8
Joyland
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon
The Talisman
Are all good places to start. Like the others in this group, I don't believe in censorship, but I do believe that certain stories are more appealing to certain ages.

Charles | 96 comments Good call on The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, one of the more underappreciated S.K. books.

message 10: by Max (new)

Max | 15 comments I am reading that one’s in class there is not a lot of character development so far

message 11: by Mark (new)

Mark (marke_) | 103 comments The Shining is fine but you should consult your parents.

message 12: by Brianna (new)

Brianna Hope | 6 comments I tried reading the shining around this age and wasn’t very interested in it. Instead some books I read and liked were the girl who loved Tom Gordon, the long walk, and misery.

Atlanta (dark_leo) | 107 comments Max, before we got started do you have permission to be on goodreads and do you have permission to read the shining?

message 14: by Max (new)

Max | 15 comments Yes I have permission to be on good reads

message 15: by Atlanta (new)

Atlanta (dark_leo) | 107 comments Ok, and do you have permission to read the shining?

message 16: by Jenny (new)

Jenny a.k.a....Jenny from the block | 725 comments Everyone to each their own but I do recall that my favorite books that I was reading around 12 were the Alfred Hitchcock Investigators and if you can find them they are a lot of fun. At 13 I was also interested in Nancy Drew & Hardy Boys. Again do read with caution a lot of SK books are directed towards the older audiences but do consider speaking with your parents or at the very least a librarian... Happy Reading....

Hello Max! Welcome. I also think as others have said to make sure with your parents that reading King books is OK. He is a fantastic author but there can be a lot of adult themes in his books. Everyone in the group just wants to make sure that you pick the right book and enjoy reading it. Hope we all have helped you.

message 18: by Max (new)

Max | 15 comments I have read two of his books very recently the girl who loved Tom Gordon and 11/22/63 I thought although sometimes dark that I could handle them. I loved the story arc and character development in 11/22/63. When he goes back in time you can really tell in how he describes the setting in such detail.

When I was 12, my parents were just glad I was interested in reading anything, and never bothered to monitor any of the books I read.

message 20: by Max (new)

Max | 15 comments Thank you i showed this to my parents and they let me buy the shining

message 21: by Wyatt (new)

Wyatt | 90 comments Hello. I’m 13 now but read the Shining at 11. I honestly think 11/22/63 has worse content but that’s just my opinion. The Shining has one scene that I skipped over but that is it.

message 22: by Wyatt (new)

Wyatt | 90 comments Misery is my favourite book by King so far, that and the third Dark Tower Book. Misery is very intense, but there are really only two particularly gruesome moments. As you have mentioned, King is VERY descriptive. It (Misery, not IT) has less swearing than King’s other books, and no sexual content.
