I was looking forward to a suspenseful story in a sunny, sultry setting, but was disappointed in the lack of specific details about the city and its residents. The use of two voices and the way the story unfolded was effective in building suspense, but for a longtime mystery/suspense reader, the storyline seemed familiar.
Finished. 4 stars
I thought the story started out a little slow and was nearly ready to call it quits, but I'm glad I didn't. I liked the location descriptions and kept hearing the song from Casablanca and expecting Humphrey Bogart to appear from the shadows. I even pulled up a Google map which I referred to while reading. I might have to watch that movie again, soon.
The mind games that Lucy played!! Poor Alice, she didn't have a chance against her. I was thinking Lucy was Alice's alter ego (split personality) so I was a little let down that Lucy turned out to be just a regular run-of-the-mill psychopath, lol.
I am always slightly surprised when a debut author produces such a good story.
I see there is a movie in the works with Scarlett Johansson.

Hi Susan and Karen, thanks both for sharing your thoughts.
I finished this last week and felt rather disappointed by it : (
The author didn't really make me feel like I was in this time period at all. I felt the ending was very predictable and really wanted a twist that I didn't see coming. I really wanted to love it but felt rather let down . Hate to say it, but maybe the movie will be better !
