Abigail (handmaiden) | 171 comments For those who don't know, most BBC radio programs can be listened to from their website around the world (unlike their tv shows). In addition to music and non-fiction programming, they have a lot of dramatizations of books, including classic works. I'm starting this discussion thread to post adaptations of books that fit the parameters of this group (they mainly produce dramatizations, but occasionally there are readings).

Most programs are available for 30 days, then expire. A few have been made available indefinitely.

[Edited to add: ~~~~~
If anyone else feels like browsing the various currently available dramas, just go here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/category...

Or, to get to the "Drama" page from the BBC home page, choose "Sounds" on the top or bottom menu bar (on the top menu bar, you have to click the "more" dropdown box). Then on the "Sounds" page, scroll down to "Categories" (near the bottom). The icons are black and white pictures. Choose "Drama."]

Jeeves - Live! - "Indian Summer of an Uncle": https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000... Only 4 days left on this one; but, the second program, "The Great Sermon Handicap," has 11 days left and is a separate story: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000...

TS Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats," read by Jeremy Irons: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000... Also 4 days left.

"Oliver: Lagos to London": https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000... 22 days left on Part 1. This is an adaptation of Dickens' classic Oliver Twist, in a modern setting. Based on my experience with other adaptations in modern settings that they have done, I expect it will be ok content-wise, but I haven't listened yet, so if there is anything inappropriate, do let us know.

There is also a version of Oliver Twist in its original setting, available indefinitely, from BBC's School Radio: https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-ra...

Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b037... Part 1 available for 26 more days.

Feel free to link other BBC Radio adaptations.

Abigail (handmaiden) | 171 comments "The Northern Irish Man in CS Lewis": https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b007... This was good. Though the credits don't specify, the dramatization sounds like it was drawn primarily from Lewis's account of his childhood in Surprised by Joy.

3 days left before expiration.

A few posts above, I had posted the 15 Minute Drama version of The Far Pavilions. Often, after the week's episodes have aired, they then publish an omnibus version of the drama (i.e., the week's five 15-minute episodes are combined into one long episode). So, here is the omnibus version of The Far Pavilions: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b062... 23 days left.

I thought I would mention that since sometimes there are programs that might be worth mentioning, but that I am not familiar enough with to be quite sure of the content--but I daresay some of you would know. For instance, Patrick O'Brian's Desolation Island, one of the Jack Aubrey stories, is one of the currently available programs--but I have never read any of the books and may or may not listen to it (or not in a timely manner), so have hesitated to post. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b037... 18 days left. Likewise The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (based on And Another Thing..., sixth book in the series): https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09t... 23 days left.

Nathalie | 1 comments Thanks for this info! I didn’t know about it. I’m listening to Ben Hur already and really enjoying it. Also thanks for the navigation tips on their site - I found that to be a little confusing.

message 16: by Abigail (new)

Abigail (handmaiden) | 171 comments I'm glad you are enjoying the programs, everyone.

Nathalie, yeah, the navigation could definitely be better. They have made several navigation and design changes over the past year+ that have made the navigation worse.

Abigail (handmaiden) | 171 comments Margaret Oliphant – Phoebe Junior https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03m... 29 days left. Charming and funny adaptation of a novel of village/country life, with a bit of romance, written in the 1870s.

Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont (omnibus) https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0bf... Reading, abridged, of the novel by Elizabeth Taylor. 29 days left. I have seen a movie version of this story, and it is a charming story, though bittersweet.

The Mill on the Floss omnibus version is also a selection of this week's Drama of the Week, which means it is downloadable, either from the DotW page, here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p088... or via podcast--podcast link on DotW page menu bar. Abigail (handmaiden) | 171 comments This isn't BBC, but since it's basically the same subject (book readings), I'll go ahead and mention it here.

Some of you may be aware of this, but for those who aren't, Audible has made some of its books available for streaming because of the pandemic. The focus is on kids, so most of the selections are kids' books, but there is a "literary classics" section that includes Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, Shakespeare's The Tempest, Romeo and Juliet, Frankenstein, and Moby-Dick, among a number of others. (Also, some C.S. Lewis non-fiction in the Teen section.)

https://stories.audible.com/start-listen

"For as long as schools are closed, we're open. Right now, kids everywhere can instantly stream an incredible collection of stories, including titles across six different languages, that will help them continue dreaming, learning, and just being kids.

All stories are free to stream on your desktop, laptop, phone or tablet."

Lord of the Flies, by William Golding https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b02x... 26 days left. I believe the novel is rather violent, but a radio adaptation may be able to deal with that in a way that is not as offputting as is likely in a visual medium. However, I haven't listened, myself, as of yet, so can't comment particularly. Take it for what it's worth. Or not. :)

Abigail (handmaiden) | 171 comments The Man Who Was Thursday, by G.K. Chesterton. Read by Geoffrey Palmer. They don't definitively say, but I think it is unabridged. Back when they aired it (and I listened) a couple of years ago, I compared the combined run time of 6+ hours to other editions that I knew to be unabridged, and it is quite similar. I had also read along with a few passages in my copy of the book as I listened, and the audio seemed to be word for word. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b007...
