Joni | 613 comments War Horse takes in during World War 1 and is told from the point of view of Joey, a beautiful red bay. Joey was purchased as a foal out of spite.....his new owner didn't want the neighbor to have him, but he didn't want him either. But Joey had a savior, young Albert. Albert loved this horse and did everything for him....feeding, groom and training to do farm work. When WWI broke out, Joey was sold to the Army because money was needed to keep the farm running. Young Albert and Joey were both so sad.

Joey was a work horse but also an inspiraton to soldiers and the other horses. Joey did many jobs during the war from charging on the front lines, pulling an ambulance cart, a heavy guy cart and also an horse cart/trailer. But what Joey wanted most was his Albert.

Joey got his wish when he was injured, alone and at his lowest. When Joey was rescued and taken to a veterinary clinic, he hurt so bad and was so dirty with blood and mud. He soon recognized the voice of the man working on was his Albert, but Albert didn't know it. Albert had been to young to join the Army when Joey was sold, but as soon as he was old enough, he joined the Army and the veterinary regiment with the hopes of one day finding his Joey. They were now reunited. But Joey was very sick with tetanus and was near death. Albert begged his superiors to attempt to treat Joey. Treatment was a success. When the war ended, Albert and Joey were able to return home and resume their farm duties.

Susie | 4488 comments I thought this was a great book. The stage production is currently on here in Melbourne. I’m thinking of going to see it.
