What is a threat the couple is facing within their relationship? How does their reaction reinforce their character traits (speak on behalf of both main characters)?

Tyson D. | 16 comments The main threat that the couple is facing is Duilio and his reemergence into the life of Jasmine.

Drew, after learning of her past and her scars reacts with violence, showing the darker and less restrained part of himself. He loves Jasmine so very much and doesn't quite know how to reconcile her past without aggression against the still living father-figure.

Jasmine on the other hand, who seems to live in her past, suffers a bit of PTSD and bad dreams from the incident. She's afraid of Duilio and the possibility of him getting to her again.

Shaunae | 20 comments A threat that that couple is facing within their relationship is Jasmine's insecurities about adjusting to the new lifestyle that Drew has introduced her to.

Jasmine genuinely feels as though it is not wise for her to get used to being pampered and taken care of by Drew. (This makes me wonder if she constantly thinks about being hurt again, and as a result, the luxuries made readily available to her would be pulled from under her feet like a rug. Maybe this is another reason why she does not want to get too comfortable). She has a constant battle in her mind as to whether she should succumb to the luxuries or if she should remain set in her "normal" ways. The character is not fond of Drew's idea that her life and his life are one life as he expressed to her. In this dispute with Drew, she reveals that she does, indeed, feel as though her complicated life would be a burden to him and that he will prevent her from achieving goals she had set for herself in life. Jasmine’s reluctance to completely accept this easier way of life from Drew enforces her headstrong and independent character traits.

In contrast, Drew’s feelings are the exact opposite of Jasmine’s. He strongly feels as though nothing that Jasmine has been through or anything that she has yet to go through should interfere with their relationship; their love. He has a hard time wrapping his mind around the fact that their relationship doesn’t come as easy to Jasmine as it does to him. The thought of living life separate from her infuriates him and he wants her to understand that he was made to compliment and elevate her, never to take anything away from her. Although Drew struggles to keep his cool when Jasmine’s insecurities cause her to question his integrity, he does an amazing job as reassuring her and giving her the comfort that she needs.

Tyson, Duilio's reemergence into Jasmine's life is, indeed, a major threat that occurs during Jasmine and Drew's relationship. It's interesting to think about Drew's darker and less restrained side. It even excites me that his character is more complex than many make him out to be. I feel as though both of our responses shed light on two of Drew's most dominant character traits in the novel, "Taking Chances", which are his loving and affectionate side and his protective and impulsive side. This adds layers to his character and makes for a more engaging read.

Your observation is very enlightening. The aspects you note in regards to his darker side, being triggered and him loving Jasmine
sheds light to his struggle to restrain his aggression. I think it is interesting that Jasmine has PTSD, her past stresses her more than she likes to admit and she needs much help. Thank you for sharing.

You made mention of this in class. It is an accurate observation with the couple. She doesn't was to submit to such lifestyle because disappointment is her normal, becoming one with the notion of his lifestyle portrays it might be only a dream. Yes, you mentioned she doesn't know if it will be pulled from under her like a rug; this idea scares her such uncertainty. It's interesting to observe how Victoria accepts it with welcome arms. On the other hand, Jasmine struggles with accepting her life as bliss because it's been hell for so long ( although she is trying to). A nice life for her seems to far from reach to believe. Consequently, those threats hold her back. I like the observation of how Drew see's being in a relationship with Jasmine doesn't seem difficult to him. It speaks to the volume of his love, determination and willingness to keep choosing her despite what she is going through. In his eyes as long as they are together everything is fine. He is a total different guy with Jasmine as she is a different woman becoming with Drew. Nice observations!
