I read this novel last year. A woman returns to the small village where she grew up with her mother and brother during WWII. The village was Nazi occupied and a young officer somewhat befriends the family. They eventually flee after the village turns against them. Now that the woman has returned to the village in her old age, she opens a very small restaurant and serves the food found in her mother's old recipe book. A conniving nephew and his wife want her to sell the recipe book to them. One older man in the village is her most reliable customer.
