childrens book about a girl who makes a wooden boat and travels to timbuktu

This book was read in to 90s and involves a girl who is a wood carver. She makes 3 different wooden boxes, using rosewood and sassafras. She makes a boat and travels to Timbuktu. It may be a short story in a book of short stories, or it may be it's own book.... Please let me know if you can help.

How old was the girl in the story?

Did the girl go to the real Timbuktu in Africa?

If it was its own book, was it a picture book or a child's novel?

All good questions. I don't know. I'm trying to find the answer for a customer at my library. I thought I got all the details out of her that I could but these are questions I didn't think to ask.
