Debating On Reading This Series - Opinions please?
Michelle Michelle Dec 01, 2014 11:07AM
I am currently reading TMI series which I love so far. I know Infernal Devices is a prequel to TMI but I was just wondering, I assume the writing style is the same because it is by the same lovely author but is the storyline much different? As in, different to make some people like one series but not the other? I am debating reading this series I would just like a bit of an idea as to what it is like. I am so in love with the main characters of TMI so considering this is a prequel I know those characters won't be in this series.

Please give me some of your opinions to help me out! I would very much appreciate it! :)

I would recommend reading the series as the books give you the same feeling of awe as TMI, only with a different storyline. However, and this is just my opinion, I wouldn't recommend the series if you're faint-hearted. I know that sounds crazy but the ending and other aspects of the story really hit me hard, but I don't regret reading the series.

It was great but my heart hasn't mended yet.

Loved it...and then I cried. A lot. It's funny, and lovely, yet I didn't like the ending. You might enjoy it though since many people did.

Honestly I know people who had not like TMI but loved TID, but I dont knnow anyone who liked TMI and din't absolutley love TID too! In my opinion, Infernal DEvices is even better than Mortal Instruments because although the plot is not as riveting as TMI, the characters are sooo much better! The first book starts a little slow but once you get to the second book you fall in love with the characters so much that you can't put it down. Plus its really cool because there are so many connections made between the series and as a mortal instruments fan I'm sure you'll catch onto them quickly and find them as cool as I did! Also idk what book you're on in TMI but DO NOT READ THE 6TH TMI BEFORE YOU READ TID! It will compleltey spoil TID for you

Oh don't worry I'm reading the three books of TID before The sixth book of TMI :) im almost finished book 1 of infernal devices and I love it so far!

The plotline is different enough to be unique, but similar enough to be lovable. The characters are just as hysterical and to die for in this book. However, as you know, the biggest difference is the setting. If you aren't big into historical settings, this may not be the book for you.

I personally am not a big fan of books set in the past, but I found this series very enjoyable and amazing and stuff!!!

Adelyn, I am not a huge fan of historical settings but so far I love Infernal devices :)

The Infernal Devices is my 2nd favourite series of all time :-) (Harry Potter is my 1st) personally I found The Mortal Instuments a little slow to start but I soon got sucked into the story & loved it, however I feel TID is much better written with more interesting characters and a fantastic plot - give it a go you won't be disappointed!

Thank you Kat :)

The Infernal Devices to me was much better than The Mortal Instruments

I read TMI before TID. I loved all the characters and the story and the setting from TMI. And omg, Jace. I "knew" Clare couldn't come up with anyone better than him. So when I decided to read TID, I was pretty set on not liking it nearly as much, but I still wanted to read it since it was a prequel.
The first book I enjoyed, nothing special. But after the second and third I was proved super wrong. You fall in love all over again with the new characters, the new setting and story, and the love story in this series outdoes most ones. I cried reading the third book, and not just once. So, read it! :)

thers no way not to love infernal devices, all the characters are amazing and it helps to understand better the morthal instruments.

I enjoyed the first three books of TMI (I still have to read the last one of the series because the books after City of Glass kinda annoyed me) but I disliked TID. Clockwork Angel is okay-ish even though I think Cassandra's writing didn't make justice to that era. Clockwork Princess is where I quit the series because (and I know is a very unpopular opinion) I personally hated that book.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, Ornella :) I respect you for sharing yours even if you didn't like the series :) it's perfectly understandable.

I love the series, and I got my mom to read it as well, and she LOVED it. So you have to read it for I believe you will fall in love with it as well.

You have to read them! I can honestly say that I preferred the Infernal Devices books to the Mortal Instruments series!!!

Thank you Adam and everyone else for your advice :) ive already been reading the infernal devices which I love and am so glad I started reading. I'm currently in the middle of clockwork princess :)

You should reed it not only because TID, in my opinion is great, but also because Reading COHF without Reading TID is suicide, it will spoil everything about The mortal instruments. And Reading the infernal devices gives you a better understanding of some caracters in TMI ^^

Yes, read Infernal Devices. I love it more than the Mortal Instruments.

I read most of the TMI series before I read TID. I actually didn't like TID as much. I found it harder to get into. I'm also probably the only person in the world who is not a Will Herondale fan either.

That being said, I would still recommend you read it. And like the Allison said above, read book 6 of TMI after you've read the TID Trilogy.

they are totally different. the characters have different personalities( I find that in books by the same author the characters are the same) the time and place is different and the plots are completely different. personally the infernal devices was the better series, though it is very debatably. I also think the characters in TID are more mature the the ones in TMI. also you don't have to read the whole series of TMI to get TID. but altogether I do recommend this series.

what book are you on in TMI?

I think you should really read it. I loved TMI but I thought TID was better than the first series. Yes it is pretty much the same type of writing, but the talking is slightly difernt seeing as it is in the past. But you should really try and read it. :)

Paige - I know that feeling but I may like that depending on what happens hahaha we shall see!

Allison - I currently have books 4 & 5 here of TMI and none of TID yet so I will probably end up finishing TMI before starting TID but you've all convinced me, so I will add it to my reading list :)

Thank you everyone for your opinions! :D

You should totally read The Infernal Devices! If you loved The Mortal Instruments, this series will absolutely captivate you, catapulting you into 1800s London with Tessa Gray. It's amazing, turst me.

I personally love the Infernal Devices Series and think its better than the Immortal Devices. READ IT!!

This trilogy is my favourite thing in the world ever. It's genuinely the only series I can read again and again without getting bored. I, personally found that I loved TID way more than TMI. However, speaking to some of my friends they didn't feel the same way.
I believe strongly that you should read this series as well, and as I read somewhere above, read book 6 of TMI after finishing TID.
TID hits you right in the feels though, so just be wary of that. I have literally read the first two books 5 or so times and the last one twice, and it never fails to give me just as much emotion as it did the first time I read it.
Just be wary of the feels. And hopefully enjoy if you decide to read it.

i'm up to date with TMI and already finished the infernal devices and i would really recommend it to everyone. The plot is completely different and it is a really beautiful book. All the characters are given attention and it was filled with all kinds of love, it's a little overwhelming sometimes, but it was also the reason i found it better than TMI. Will, Jem and Tessa will make you fall in love with the three of them "equally" in a very beautiful way. So yes, please read it! :)

Definitely going to read them Kimi! :) and I'm familiar enough with how overwhelming TMI can be so I don't know if my heart is prepared for Infernal Devices, haha we shall see if I survive.

Read them. You won't be disappointed! I liked them better the TMI.

I will! And a lot of people have told me they liked it better than TMI, so I'm definitely looking forward to it!

Rohima - sounds similar to another series I recently finished that had a ton of unexpected plot twists that sent my heart whirling with every page lol it makes me suffer but also makes me really enjoy the book haha so I think I will try this series :D

Yeah, I think that it's best if you read TMI 1-5, then TID, then TMI 6. The series are a bit different, but everyone I've talked to who's liked one more than the other likes TID better (myself included :P ) I think it's definitely worth a read :)

I personally loved the series up until the last book. The last book felt like a cheap, 'let's keep everyone happy' ending. Other than the last fifty or so pages though, the series was just as good as TMI in my opinion.

I am in the middle of City of Glass :) so I still have a long way to go before I finish but I always find myself adding a ton of new books to my reading list haha.

Yes I have seen a few debates on which series is better. I assume both are very good! I just wonder if I will miss the characters from TMI if I am reading Infernal Devices. I get too attached to fictional characters! If it is still a good series though I am seriously thinking about reading it but I wanted some opinions :)
