Anita Pomerantz | 9362 comments Another close vote, but in the end the following tag emerged victorious.

thriller

Please share your reading plans and recommendations below.

Remember, for the regular monthly reads, the book can be shelved as thriller on Goodreads, or be a book that is not yet shelved that way but you feel should be.

One way to find books to read for this tag is to please visit:

https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...

We encourage people to link to additional lists below if they find them.

Happy reading!

message 2: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte | 1701 comments Yay!!! This was my 2nd favorite but I have so many on my IRL TBR

I'll probably read Sharp Objects or Inferno or the Silent Patient... so many options!!!

message 3: by Amy (new)

Amy | 13033 comments Thrilled for Thriller because it starts my TBR right!

Here's what I am looking to read:

Verity
Darling Rose Gold
An Anonymous Girl

And I brought Verity from my home library out with me, to hopefully start Jan 1.....

message 4: by Rachel N. (last edited Dec 22, 2019 10:06AM) (new)

Rachel N. | 2261 comments I nominated humor but I'm happy with thriller. I read a lot of thrillers so I'm sure I'll find plenty to read for this tag.

It is on my list to read at the beginning of the year and it has the thriller tag so there's one book I'm definitely reading. I need something long to read while my fiance does 6 hours of cognitive testing.

message 5: by Doughgirl5562 (new)

Doughgirl5562 | 962 comments I can't remember the tag that I voted for, but Thriller works for me! I'll be reading the next book or two in The Royal Spyness series by Rhys Bowen, which also happens to be set during the Great Depression so Oklahoma points for the Poll Ballet Tally!

message 6: by Nikki (new)

Nikki | 663 comments Yay! This one got my vote, after having been so pleasantly surprised by the 'crime fiction' tag recently. I'm hoping to read Dark Matter & (if I get to the top of the library hold list in time) The Likeness.

It was a battle between humor and thriller so still a great suggestion! Even french did pretty well. Our votes have been scary close lately. But the second choice voting went heavily to thriller.

message 8: by Barbara M (last edited Dec 22, 2019 11:37AM) (new)

Barbara M (barbara-m) | 2603 comments As usual, I have way more "thriller" tags on my TBR than I will be able to read in one month. So these are just possibilities in no particular order:
Dark Matter
The Silent Patient
The Wife Between Us
Die Trying
The Good Daughter
The Cuckoo's Calling
Alone
Heat Lightning
Mind Prey

message 9: by Booknblues (new)

Booknblues | 12317 comments I used to read thrillers as a pretty steady diet, but not so much anymore. I do have Two Kinds of Truth and Before I Go to Sleep on my TBR, so looks like the direction I will be going.

Rachel, I am sorry you humor was not chosen, I voted for it.

message 10: by Karin (last edited Dec 22, 2019 12:23PM) (new)

Karin | 9316 comments Well, and this will come as no shock to those who know my reading tastes, this is NOT how I voted :) !! But that's how it goes in a democratic process. That said, I've read 8 on the first page alone (and gave 4 stars to The Bourne Identity and In the Woods, but I read the first 3 Bourne books back in my spy novel days).

I will go through and check those I have shelved want to read (one is on the first page) and see what I can figure out to read. I'll be back if I find any 5 star reads in there :)!

ETA I already have Lock Every Door here for some reason (not 2005 but had put it in that pile by mistake) and perhaps will read it since it works for Popsugar and I am going to at least start that again this year, mixing it in with everything else I do here, etc.

message 11: by Joni (new)

Joni | 626 comments The good thing is that I have two thriller books that I had selected to read as my state books. I am trying to combine has much as possible so I do not overstretch myself.

message 12: by KateNZ (new)

KateNZ | 4134 comments I was one of the Francophile brigade, but I had so many for each of the options that I didn’t mind which way it went.

I’m at least going to tick off The Woman in the Window (unused from my Trim list this year) and will finally get to Dark Matter.

message 13: by Michael (last edited Dec 22, 2019 01:00PM) (new)

Michael (mike999) | 569 comments Have used the tag for 240 books on read shelves, I a genre I return to a lot.

Am looking forward to:
The Other People--C.J. Tudor
Blue Moon--Lee Child
Neon Prey--John Sanford

A lot of my favorites are in series, but often the authors don't get up to speed until a few books in. I think for exploring an author it is effective to read one judged as "best of", then if you like it you can do the satisfying approach of reading their series in order.
Anyway, here are my top picks of some popular authors:

Mystery/thrillers
The Alienist-Caleb Carr
The Chalk Girl--Carol O.Connell
Time to Hunt (Bob Lee Swagger)--Stephen Hunter
Hot Springs (Earl Swagger)--Stephen Hunter
Die Trying (Jack Reacher)--Lee Child
L.A. Requiem (Elvis Cole)--Robert Crais
Golden Prey (Lucas Davenport)--John Sandford
Memory Man (Amos Decker)--David Baldacci

Espionage
The Key to Rebecca--Ken Follett
Shibumi--Trevanian
December 6--Martin Cruz Smith
Red Sparrow--Jason Matthews
The One Man--Andrew Gross

Techno-thrillers
Ready Player One--Ernest Cline
Beat the Reaper--Josh Bazell
Dark Matter--Blake Crouch
The Peripheral--William Gibson

message 14: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9362 comments I am going to read The Woman in the Window too, Kate!!!

message 15: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11778 comments I have so many that fit "thriller". I will likely read something by Harlan Coben and/or by Linwood Barclay.

Alternately, "Tyrannosaur Canyon" by Douglas Preston is an option, along with many others that I might pick up, as well!

message 16: by Olivermagnus (new)

Olivermagnus (lynda11282) | 4901 comments The majority of books I read are thriller so I'm excited this tag won!

message 17: by Hayjay315 (new)

Hayjay315 | 465 comments I really wanted French but will view this as a way to delve more in to a genre I rarely read. That being said, I have to read a medical thriller for another challenge but do not like super dark/scary books. Can anyone recommend something that may be more within my taste but still fit the genre?

message 18: by Charlotte (last edited Dec 22, 2019 02:33PM) (new)

Charlotte | 1701 comments I've been digging through my books today and am trying to hit as many challenges as I can with each book:

1. The Silent Patient - popsugar medical thriller prompt and my personal BoM challenge
2. One of Us Is Lying - popsugar social media prompt
3. The Gunslinger - popsugar western prompt, Ballot for either western or Stephen King
4. Recursion - popsugar 2019 award winner prompt and my personal BoM challenge

Recursion is quite good--four stars for me, but more from a scifi POV than a thriller POV :).

message 20: by ~*Kim*~ (new)

~*Kim*~ (greenclovers75) Oooh, lots of good choices for this one. I'm thinking of reading one of these:

Before I Go to Sleep
Tell No One
The Butterfly Garden
The Girl Before

For recommendations:

Triptych
Child 44
Reconstructing Amelia
Big Little Lies
The Other Daughter
Anything by Harlan Coben

message 21: by Joanne (last edited Dec 22, 2019 03:56PM) (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12760 comments Many moons ago I started to read Lee Child's series with Jack Reacher. I don't remember why I stopped. So this Tag gives me a reason to start the series over. I am going with Killing Floor, the 1st in the series. I am hoping this will help me have one more "go-to" genre.

I was a huge reader of this genre at one time. I can recommend:

The Camel Club
The Boys from Brazil
The Kill Artist
Eye of the Needle
American Assassin

Gabriel Allon is one of my very favorite characters. His new one is still untitled but I'm already chomping at the bit for 7/14/2020.

message 23: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments I have heard such good things about Woman In The Window! I may join in on that one!

But first, I just picked up Ninth House from the library! Anyone want to join me in reading this one?!

Yay to both Anita and you. Let's do it!

Ninth House is totally in my sights as well. I just bought it for myself for Christmas. (*whistles idle seasonal ditty*)

I'm currently reading The Likeness from the Dublin Murder Mystery series, and I'm seriously enjoying it. The first in the series was great too (In the Woods) - they're very good page-turner stories but more character-driven than many and not over-dark or scary, @Hayjay (at least not so far...).

The Robert Galbraith (aka JK Rowling) books are in similar vein, but Tana French has the edge for me - she writes in a very taut way, which I like a lot.

Cannot wait to hear your reaction to this one Nicole-Wow! Way out of my comfort zone, but I could not put it down

message 26: by Amy (new)

Amy | 13033 comments Just to note - about 6-8 people, possibly more, put the Ninth House on the optional unofficial Trim 2020 Continuation at #2. So there will be a big old grand buddy read for it, within the next 24 months, possibly quite soon. If it gets picked next month, many of you guys will be in business. I however, will not be a part of that group. But for whatever the reason From Sand and Ash (at #11) doubled in size as well. Perhaps when that is picked, it may also match the monthly tag somehow.....

message 27: by Amy (new)

Amy | 13033 comments Isn't anybody interested in reading Darling Rose Gold with me? Feels like it just came out and folks are five starring it everywhere. Its on my 2020 priority list in fact.

message 28: by Theresa (last edited Dec 22, 2019 06:54PM) (new)

Theresa | 15854 comments Thriller was my second choice after French...at least half my Trim is thriller. My shelves have loads that fit...being a crime fiction mystery fan, no surprise. And no challenge.

Here are authors to explore...all of whom I have read and enjoyed:

Nevada Barr
Eric Ambler
William Bernhardt
Alan Furst
Carl Hiaasen
Marcia Muller
Thomas Perry
Martin Cruz Smith
Sue Grafton
Lee Child

A few particularly notable reads that fit (Where I gave high stars)
The President Is Missing
Dark Rooms
The Travelers
Istanbul Passage

message 29: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11778 comments I don't usually do "buddy reads", but with a few others doing "The Woman in the Window", it's also on my tbr, so it's tempting.

message 30: by NancyJ (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11217 comments Wow, I got confused when I saw this post. This month is going by very fast. I kept my tag research to a minimum this week so I don't have anything planned. I won a lot of giveaway books last year, and there should be some good thrillers in there.

We had a tag like this last January too (Action/Adventure). I think it will be a nice change of pace after the emotional books and sappy films I'm consuming.

FYI. If you have never seen the classic Shop Around the Corner, it's on Turner Classic Movies this week. I have to watch it every year.

One of my all time favorite movies, and vasis for one of my favorite musicals, 'She Loves Me'.

I know TCM is showing it again Monday early evening...

I don't think I knew about 'She Loves Me!' I knew about the links to 'In the Good Old Summertime' (which is also a Xmas movie), and 'You've Got Mail.'

Also, thanks for the author links above for the thrillers.

I was very pleasantly surprised by The President is Missing.

I'm in the mood for some spy thrillers because of this book:

A Woman of No Importance: The Untold Story of the American Spy Who Helped Win World War II by Purnell. It's based on a true story. It has thriller tags, but it's not the primary genre.

I've had mixed reactions to Lee Child's Jack Reacher books. I loved the first one I read (not the first in the series), and disliked another. All thrillers require the ability to suspend disbelief, but Reacher is like a super-hero.

Susie I think I’ll read The Woman in the Window too!

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Susie wrote: "I think I’ll read The Woman in the Window too!"

Okay, I am definitely going to read this with everyone else!

And, I just happened to have bought the paperback version for my mom for Christmas! lol. I wonder if I can convince her to let me read it first then mail it back to her when I am done. LOL

message 36: by Idit (new)

Idit | 1028 comments hmm... that was my last choice...
I'm quite a wuss - so scary books are not my thing usually
(I'm sure I"ll find something fun to read though)

I might join the budding buddy read - and read 'the woman in the window'

or see if I can hit some other challenges with one of these:
The Turn of the Screw
The House on the Borderland
The Shining
My Cousin Rachel
The Scapegoat

message 37: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9362 comments Yes Idit! Read Women in the Window with us. We will hold your virtual hand through the scary parts.

The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

In the copy I have of the first one, Lee Childs explains why it it appears this way. He thought long and hard before writing the character.

Booknblues | 12317 comments So I received an email from Amazon today about mystery, thriller and suspense. I was surprised to find A Gentleman in Moscow on that list and when I checked Goodreads, 10 people had classified it as a thriller.

For those who don't love the thriller genre, this might be an excellent choice.
