Card 15 Questions Recommendations
I'm reviewing the December new releases and found one that will fit Card 15, Art/Lit Nay task - Written from any animals' point of view.I, Cosmo squeaks by the minimum page number with 192 pages.
Geography: YayYay Task - Read the first book in a 5-book series.
Any suggestions for 5-book series, preferably fantasy or cozy mystery?
Have you read Legend of Eli Monpress? It's fantasy and I really enjoyed the series.Artifact Hunters is a steampunk series.
One more A Tiki Goddess Mystery Series is a fun cozy mystery series set in Hawaii. I loved the humour. You'll fall in love with the tiki goddesses who are a hula group of all ages.
I read the entire Eli Monpress series when we had the serial killing challenge. I'll look into the Tiki Goddess mystery, thanks!

The first 5-book series that I thought of for this task was Charlaine Harris's Lily Bard mysteries. I think they are considered cozy.
Have you read all the books in the Fairyland series? The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making
Peggy wrote: "That was one I thought of myself, but I'm already at book 3. Fun series!"I miss read the task. I was thinking of card 3 geography you can read any book in a series of 5. sorry.
For task 1, the 5-book series, I need a ruling. Pronto is part of a series that was 4 books, but then Leonard wrote what looks like a full length book 2.5 (ebook only). Does that then make it an acceptable 5 book series?
Beth wrote: "For task 1, the 5-book series, I need a ruling. Pronto is part of a series that was 4 books, but then Leonard wrote what looks like a full length book 2.5 (ebook only). Does that then ..."No, sorry. The .5's are excluded from consideration in the series. If you look at the series page, it says "4 primary works". The "primary works" are the designation I'm looking for in any of the series tasks.

I have lots of first books in a series, but hopefully most will go in other tasks.
I answered the History question correctly so now I have to find a "book is set in Tibet or written by a Tibetan author".I own The Dalai Lama's Cat. Will this book fit for this task?
Janice - For the Science question I answered "Pupa" and gave myself a Yay. This results in "Read a book with "Chrysalis" or "Cocoon" in the title". Will The Chrysalids work? or maybe I will go see what the Nay task is.edited: OMG, I am claiming insanity. I am taking a Nay and looking for a book with a butterfly on it. I guess you still could answer the question for someone else though.
Cherie wrote: "I answered the History question correctly so now I have to find a "book is set in Tibet or written by a Tibetan author".I own The Dalai Lama's Cat. Will this book fit for this task?"
I'm not sure that it's set in Tibet since the Dalai Lama went into exile in 1959 and now resides in India. The author was born in Africa and grew up there according to his profile.
Perhaps someone who's read it can confirm.
Cherie wrote: "Janice - For the Science question I answered "Pupa" and gave myself a Yay. This results in "Read a book with "Chrysalis" or "Cocoon" in the title". And the answer is yes, Chrysalids will work.
You caught me. Technically, I answered it incorrectly. I did not have the exact word but isn’t a pupa the same thing?
Cherie wrote: "You caught me. Technically, I answered it incorrectly. I did not have the exact word but isn’t a pupa the same thing?"You're right. It's a technicality. I googled "Pupa", and can't find the word "Chrysalis" associated with it, so you're in luck.

I will give the first book a try, IF/WHEN I get to the task, and I can find a copy. It is an old book but I have had it on my TBR for a long time. I have a butterfly cover as a back up. Maybe my book thief can find it for me. ;o)
On my Tibet question - I found another book to read and will move his cat to the "house cat on the cover" task on card 28.
So - with the manga task (Entertainment/Nay) how do you determine if there are enough words? I enjoy graphic novels and manga but I never use them for these challenges because I never think there are enough words to equal a 175 page book.
Katrisa wrote: "So - with the manga task (Entertainment/Nay) how do you determine if there are enough words? I enjoy graphic novels and manga but I never use them for these challenges because I never think there a..."Good question. I don't know. Suggestions anyone?
The only graphic novel I tried to read was in audiobook form - Locke and Key. It was the omnibus of the series and was 14 hours long. All words. Since a graphic novel is dependent on graphics, I was totally lost so gave up. I guess you might want to look for omnibus editions.
We may have to verify each book individually.
The only graphic novels I have read are the first several issues of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman saga (which I have never gotten back to - but should). There was a lot of text and a lot of pages to look at and understand but I’m not sure how to quantify them with a 175 page book either. I can’t remember how many pages there were in the issues I read. Seemed like a lot when I was trying to twist my mind around the artwork and figure out the characters and the action. I had to read them over a few times before I understood. It got a little easier after I got a handle on the MCs, but that may just be me showing my age, even if I did learn to read in the old days of newsprint comic books.
Cherie - I just read all the Sandman books over my Christmas break! They are awesome. The longer ones are around 230 pages but probably only have about a paragraph or so of text per page.Janice can I just read like 2 or 3 books from a series for the Manga task even if they aren't packaged as one edition?
Katrisa wrote: "Janice can I just read like 2 or 3 books from a series for the Manga task even if they aren't packaged as one edition? ..."That sounds like a workable solution to me. I have the same task, but will go with the "Books for Anime Manga Lovers" list option .

I went with your solution, too. Since I do so much audio, manga wasn't really gonna work for me.
For the Science Nay task - cover has a butterfly on it - does the butterfly needs to be complete, or would this cover work?
I have owned People of the Book for years, and never thought about that cover being a butterfly wing. I have it on my challenge under Card 10, History-Nay, "the theme is religion" but I could move it, depending on the answer too.
Marie Claude wrote: "For the Science Nay task - cover has a butterfly on it - does the butterfly needs to be complete, or would this cover work?
"Oooh, good book. I read it awhile back. I also saw this one on the list of anticipated books for 2020 in the Goodreads newsletter:

"Yes, it will work.

Oooh - pink cover! I have that task.
Oh brother. I was just going to recommend The Hitchhikers Guide series to anyone needing Geography Yay Task - Read the first book in a 5-book series, but I just saw that the book another author wrote that was based off of an unfinished draft that was found after Douglas Adams died is concidered the 6th book. I'm assuming that messes thing up, doesnt it Janice? (Doesn't hurt to ask just in case!)
Lucy wrote: "Oh brother. When I looked up the books here on GR it still says 5 primary works.
If anyone is still looking for a book for History - Yay "book is set in Tibet or written by a Tibetan author", I highly recommend We Are Not Eaten by Yaks. I listened to the audio yesterday. It was a fun, cute story and the narrator did a great job.

I have a dilemma. I'm reading Children of the Stars for Yay Sports. The book page lists only a paperback version with no pages. I'm reading the Kindle version. When I link the book to the task it'll come up incomplete. How do you add another edition or add pages to the record?
Roz wrote: "I have a dilemma. I'm reading Children of the Stars for Yay Sports. The book page lists only a paperback version with no pages. I'm reading the Kindle version. When I link the book ..."I found Los niños de la estrella amarilla which lists the English edition as Children of the Stars. There are several editions listed for this book.
I wonder if the book you've linked was added as a separate book and needs to be combined with the other editions.
Janice wrote: "Roz wrote: "I have a dilemma. I'm reading Children of the Stars for Yay Sports. The book page lists only a paperback version with no pages. I'm reading the Kindle version. Is it possible to combine and update the version I got to the other editions or just delete it?
Janice wrote: "You'd have to make a request to the librarian's group to have them combine the editions."Combined and details like number of pages added to the edition you're reading, so you're able to use that one as well, Roz.
ETA: new editions aren't automatically combined with previous editions, a librarian needs to do it.
For the History Yay task Sky Burial: An Epic Love Story of Tibet, Princess in Land of Snows: The Life of Jamyang Sakya in Tibet are both really good. Then there’s The Dragon in the Land of Snows: A History of Modern Tibet Since 1947 which is drier - essentially history. Okay, GR is acting up - more in next post.
For the History Yay task, I’m planning to read, Travelers' Tales Tibet: True Stories, The Skull Mantra, Tibet, Tibet: A Personal History of a Lost Land, or Touching Tibet.
