Card 4 Tasks

Sarah | 18550 comments For the task: book made into tv show, tv series, or tv movie

What is a 'tv movie'? Is it just a normal movie? Most movies come out at the cinema before they make it on tv.

There are movies that bypass the cinema, called "Made for TV Movies". Try this site for suggestions.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19228 comments Janice, clarification on this one:

"1. Geography:
Nay Task - Book is set on an island. This task excludes the main body of any island over 200,000 km2. You may use the island if it is a small island off the main body of the island. For example, you may use The Isle of Skye off of the UK main body (or another small island), but you can't use England. Use this site as a guideline, google your island, or ask for a ruling."

Awesome, all makes sense. But for say countries made up of groups of islands that the area is bigger than 200 000 km2, can we use one of those islands that is smaller?
So for example, NZ. If I read a book set in Christchurch for example which is on the South Island (150,437 km²) would that count, even though NZ is really only two big islands totaling 268,680km2?

I assume so, but wanted to check re big countries with big islands (eg NZ, Japan, Indonesia, etc). Your Skye example works for the UK as Skye is tiny compared to the main island, so making sure i understand correctly.

I rethought this while putting the chickens to bed. I think you could say Indonesia and Japan have "main" islands. So that makes sense.

Would you say for these purposes the "main" island for this task in NZ is the south island? Even if it is less populated (like half as many people) and the capital (Wellington) and the most populous city (Auckland) is on the north? Or do you want us to factor in the social factors not just the area?

Or is NZ just too fricking hard and Rus once again managed to find the one anomaly in the world and is being bloody difficult and ffs just go to sleep woman and leave us alone?

message 7: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60154 comments Yes, your examples work, Rusalka. The idea is that the actual island where the book is set is under the 200,000 km².

message 8: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19228 comments Hehe thank you. I read that as a little of column A and a little of column B ;)

Thank you once again for your infinite patience, and answers :D

Should be for Yay.

Wouldn't that book be for Yay?

message 11: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60154 comments Correct, it would be Card 4, Geography YAY - book was originally published in Spanish.

Another one would be Cathedral of the Sea originally published as La catedral del mar, Excellent book, btw.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Ah, Beth. I had that book on my list for this year and never got to it. Too bad I got the Nay task.

Thanks for reminding me, Janice. This is my third challenge I am adding that same book title. Maybe I will get to it this year.

Unspeakable Things by Jess Lourey

message 17: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Oh, I did not get the bicycle cover task but I have a couple of books from previous challenges with covers that will fit. I will look them up and post them tomorrow.

No, but it would be great for the Card 26, Sport Yay - Telegraph/telephone/power pole task if you've got it.

The reason I reject it for this task is that you can't see the street. It's implied that there' a street there.

message 20: by Clive (new)

I was reading Tor.com on twitter, and they said there was a movement to bring back the old fashioned covers like the one you posted. I quite like them.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Janice - yay or nay for street on the cover? The Whole Town's Talking by Fannie Flagg . I know that the church steeple is the biggest in the foreground, but there is a street showing and highlighted by the row of buildings. It won't break my heart if you say no. The audiobook is entertaining and I had it on my TBR for some time.

Yes, you may use that for street on the cover.

Lucy Furr (lucyfurr) | 775 comments Just checking on a couple things:

For Geography Nay (book is set on an island) - are fake islands ok? My niece and I are going to be reading Island of the Blue Dolphins together, I read it when I was her age, thought it would be fun to read it again. The island is based off of San Nicholas Island, which is definitely under the size limit. Just wanted to make sure it would be ok,

For Art/Lit Nay (street showing on cover or street in title) - just checking to make sure The Guardians by John Grisham will work.

I may use it or not. I actually have a book with Street in the title that I really need to read.

The audiobook is wonderful. It reminds me of Fried Green Tomatoes - the same atmosphere, sad, funny, wonderful characters.

Yes to the fake islands.

No to the rural road. It needs to be an urban street.

message 36: by Lucy (new)

Lucy Furr (lucyfurr) | 775 comments Cherie - yes, I like the fact that it's based on real events. It's been about 25 years since I read it last, so I figured a reread was in order. My niece isn't the biggest reader so I'm trying to encourage her a little, and read along with her.

Janice - no problem, thanks!

Edit: I just realized this belongs on card 27. Art/Literature is the 4th task, not on the 4th card. 🤦🏼‍♀️
