Card 2 Tasks

Dominique | 1126 comments For task no 4, is thriller acceptable? The main genre is thriller not action on main page.

Sorry, both words need to show on the main book page.

Ok thanks!

Janice (jamasc) | 60157 comments I misunderstood your question. You're asking if "thriller" can be interchangeable with "action". No. The requested genre is "Action Adventure".

message 6: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Nov 30, 2019 02:12PM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60157 comments Having said that... Goodreads lists Action and Adventure as separate genres, so I will amend this task to allow for either word to show on the main book page.

Groan. I just spent the last 1/2 hour looking for a book with the genre Action on the main book page and I couldn't find one.

You're right, The Hunt for Red October doesn't have Action as a main book page genre. Instead, it has Thriller. I'm going to change that task to Thriller. I don't want to make a task near impossible to find.

Janice (jamasc) | 60157 comments Card 2, Science Nay Task - HF about exploration.

I was thinking along the lines of Shackleton, Columbus, that type of exploration. It occurs to me that exploration can be a bit more broad.

A couple that would fit this task:
Afterlands
The Wolf in the Whale

I've selected The Sea Captain's Wife for myself but I'm not entirely sure. While the husband is a merchant sea captain, the travelling would be more exploring for the wife - seeing new & exotic parts of the world, and a exploration of self-awareness. Anyone want to give me a ruling? LOL!

message 10: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I selected The Bedlam Stacks for that task.

Janice (jamasc) | 60157 comments Peggy wrote: "I selected The Bedlam Stacks for that task."

I have that one on my wishlist!! Maybe I should switch because that is clearer as "exploration".

Another one that comes to mind is Euphoria. It was a 5 star read for me. It's about 3 anthropologists studying the people of New Guinea.

message 12: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11684 comments I like the sound of Euphoria! Added to my wish list, ta Janice.

Katrisa | 4508 comments Janice, I saw you had a list of books set in April left over from the Zodiac challenge - do you have an October list too by any chance? (Art/Yay)

Janice (jamasc) | 60157 comments Katrisa wrote: "Janice, I saw you had a list of books set in April left over from the Zodiac challenge - do you have an October list too by any chance? (Art/Yay)"

October settings:
Broken Harbour
The Ghost Next Door
Dreamless
The Day of the Dead

The problem with those books is that they are all mid-series.

That Starcrossed books look good - maybe I'll start that series!

message 18: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60157 comments Katrisa, it looks like the first book in the series can fit into various tasks in the challenge. Maybe you can work them both in.

message 19: by Clive (new)

Clive Matthews | 225 comments Can I check on the criteria for the Genre 'Mythology'. I was looking at American Gods which has 'Fantasy > Mythology' listed. Would this count or does it need to be Mythology on its own?

My mum has [book:The Day of the Dead
. Would it work as a stand alone?

message 22: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60157 comments I haven't read The Day of the Dead, Margo, so I don't know if it can be read as a stand-alone. I think Cherie has been reading this series so perhaps she can tell you.

Its genre is Mystery. I find mystery series are often tied together by the detective and may not be as restrictive in the reading order as fantasy series often are. Mysteries tend to be episodic, whereas fantasies are a continuation of a story line. The question you need to ask yourself is are you okay with not having the back story of the detective?

The books I listed were all read by members when doing the Zodiac challenge. I started tracking them because there were no lists available that had books set in specific months.

I would say no to Fire Storm. Embers aren't flames, though they could start them. And Yes to No Time Like the Past.

Lilisa | 2770 comments For Geography - Y -- Setting is Chicago or Illinois - The Most Fun We Ever Had is set in Illinois (Chicago area). I didn’t care for it that much but I’m in the minority. It has a 4.06 rating so if you’re looking for the setting, try it.

Lucy Furr (lucyfurr) | 775 comments I'm having some trouble pinning down years for History Nay - Setting is 1900s to 1920s. I get a lot of descriptions like "turn of the 20th century" (The Secret Garden, which was published in 1911) or "Early 1900s" (Tarzan of the Apes, which was published in 1912). Will vague descriptions like that be accepted for the time period or should I just keep looking? I know you were fine with a book I read for setting in the 1980s just saying "takes place in the 80s", but I fell like these might be different, somehow. lol

Also, for Science Yay - Title is one word and starts with a D - Are one word titles with long subtitles allowed (since we usually ignore subtitles) or will subtitles disqualify the book in this case. The book I'm thinking of is Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company that Addicted America

I think both of those books would work. It's reasonable to think they are set around the time they were published since they both state early 1900's.

Here are the books that have already been reported for that task if you are interested:
- The Ten Thousand Doors of January
- Lady Takes the Case
- The Teacher's Funeral: A Comedy in Three Parts

Lucy Furr (lucyfurr) | 775 comments Great, thanks, and I'll check out those recs as well.

Unless stated in the task, we ignore subtitles.

Actually, I don't see flames. If the word "Fire" wasn't in the title, you likely wouldn't equate the colours on the cover to fire.

It's a really good book, and would work for Card 9 - Art/Lit Nay: The genre of the book is historical fiction about the genocide of European Jews during WWII if you have that task.

message 38: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4558 comments That'll work. I have Art/Lit Nay of Card 9, so I can use it for that task. I'll find something else for fire.

That's a tough one. I believe it will fit based on some of the reviews. One of the genres on the main page is Military: Civil War so we can go with that.

I was checking for the time period 1901 to 1919 for this task and found this falls during the Edwardian Era and also found in Wikipedia that P.G. Wodehouse's series Jeeves and Blandings Castle are set in this period. Would any of the first few books in either of these series work for this task?

message 50: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60157 comments Sounds to me like you've done the research to determine that it is indeed set in the required time period so you don't need a ruling.

As for any Goodreads listopias, use with caution. Anyone can add a book to a list. It's best to evaluate each book on its own merit.
