I will probably have to wait until next month to read this, but I would like to jump back into this series.
Oh, I've been meaning to pick this up since reading the first book. I'm glad you created this buddy read!

yup =) and yup xD thanks Kerry-Anne =Di'll post some thoughts tomorrow. i still have 3 chapters to finish from another book >_< and questions to answer >_<
I'd forgotten how fun and practical Ananna was. I agree that the unrequited love thing could get old fast. But, I expect this book will solve everything. So, it must really be pretty action packed.
And I'm not convinced her love is unrequited. Naji could just be a total idiot about emotions, after all. And likely is.
I'm gonna join in for this one too. I read a part of this book last year but never finished. I'm gonna have to go back and review parts of it. And I don't the think the love is exactly unrequited either, my impression was that Naji had some self-esteem issues because of his looks and he might not be totally over his ex...
I finished last night. That was a really quick read. And a lot of fun too. I'm not sold on the solution to the third curse. And I'm still processing the ending. Hmm... What do the rest of you think?
I'm a bit behind, since real life is getting in the way. But I have one question to ask.Would you be comfortable grooming his mane?
Okay, I agree that the Manticore of awesome. And full of personality too.And as for Ananna and Naji, yes she is a bit sensitive, but this is her first love and she's young. Plus, how awkward when you're at such close quarters all the time. Ugh.
Kerry-anne wrote: "Finished last night, I gave it 4* as I did really enjoy reading it but there was just something missing, I think when they were trying to figure out how to complete the tasks to cure the curse was ..."Kerry-anne, from what I recall, (view spoiler). My main concern was the final part of the curse, both how it happened and the way the curse was broken(view spoiler).
Kerry-Anne, Ananna did have water magic in the first book, and she used it to help them go down the river. However, she hasn't been trained and so downplays her abilities and focuses on her brains and physical abilities.
from what i gathered, she had the power, she just didn't know how to use it, and it was somewhat dormant? That's why her mother wasn't able to teach her. But it is rather strange that she somehow now has the ability to do it. Did the curse+Naji woke up her dormant powers?I also agree about the third curse. (view spoiler)
@Lara yeah i keep forgetting. She was very young and sorta inocent (only life she knew was aboard her parent's ship) and Naji is her first love. I just wished stories didn't revolve so much around love interests. But i guess it's my fault because i keep picking the same genres =p
From what I recall, Ananna didn't want to study or use magic because it would take time away from working towards her dream of being a pirate captain. Plus, I think she would have had to study under her aunt or someone she didn't like. So, it was really a lack of motivation and the fact that she associated magic with studying and not following her dream.
I finally finished the book today and I only gave it 3 stars. I agree that there was something missing in this book. I definitely liked the first one more. I felt Annana spent too much time pining over Naji and some parts of the story were too easily wrapped like the (view spoiler)I had a hard time finishing this book because I just didn't find it that interesting. And it didn't help that I suddenly got very busy at work too...

I did like it, and it's an easy enough read, but there was something missing. I liked the first book more.

Book synopsis
After setting out to break the curse that binds them together, the pirate Ananna and the assassin Naji find themselves stranded on an enchanted island in the north with nothing but a sword, their wits, and the secret to breaking the curse: complete three impossible tasks. With the help of their friend Marjani and a rather unusual ally, Ananna and Naji make their way south again, seeking what seems to be beyond their reach.
Unfortunately, Naji has enemies from the shadowy world known as the Mists, and Ananna must still face the repercussions of going up against the Pirate Confederation. Together, Naji and Ananna must break the curse, escape their enemies — and come to terms with their growing romantic attraction.
