Why did Arthur's son have to die?

Nathaniel's death was no one's fault but Jennet blames everyone. She never had the chance at happiness so... no one else can have happiness too. Just like "the mist" it comes without warning.

Do you think perhaps he was destined to perish? Arthur never truly left Eel Marsh House behind, even after returning to London. Somehow, perhaps he "brought" a piece of Jennet with him, and Jennet (doing what she does) heralded Arthur's son's death as another vengeful attack upon those whom she encountered, releasing her pain onto them.
