Our Christmas-themed read for November is The Christmas Shoes by Donna VanLiere.

Goodreads Summary:
Sometimes, the things that can change your life will cross your path in one instant-and then, in a fleeting moment, they're gone. But if you open your eyes, and watch carefully, you will believe....
Robert is a successful attorney who has everything in life-and nothing at all. Focused on professional achievement and material rewards, Robert is on the brink of losing his marriage. He has lost sight of his wife, Kate, their two daughters, and ultimately himself. Eight year old Nathan has a beloved mother, Maggie, whom he is losing to cancer. But Nathan and his family are building a simple yet full life, and struggling to hold onto every moment they have together. A chance meeting on Christmas Even brings Robert and Nathan together-he is shopping for a family he hardly knows and Nathan is shopping for a mother he is soon to lose. In this one encounter, their lives are forever altered as Robert learns an important lesson: sometimes the smallest things can make all the difference. "The Christmas Shoes" is a universal story of the deeper meaning of serendipity, a tale of our shared humanity, and of how a power greater than ourselves can shape, and even save, our lives.

Amanda (mandey1) | 46 comments actually the song came first if I remember correctly...

I'm planning on reading this one, but I have to find a few days when I don't have anything planned. I look funny after I've cried... ;)

You are correct Amanda. The song was released by New Song in 2000 and Donna Van Liere's books released in 2001.

I am not much of a Christmas novel reader and have only read one that I can recall...A Wreath of Snow by Liz Curtis Higgs. However...I found The Christmas Shoes at a recent trip to the library so decided to pick it up and give it a try.

I read the book this evening. It's very short at only 130 pages. I LOVE the song and enjoyed the book. It helps us remember what is really important...

Amanda, you make a great point. I cried through the last 20 pages or so.

I cry every time I listen to the song!

Torrie (happyredtrw) This book made me cry....however, I loved it! I really think that it was great that a family was restored through the power of Jesus simply from a teacher caring about her student and sharing stories from childhood. I am one that believes in the "little things" that can change one's life

Dora Wagner | 12 comments I had seen the movie many times, but had never read the book. I did so this year. I chose to listen to it while driving to Cincinnati for Thanksgiving. Bad idea. It was very difficult driving, as I continued to tear up. However, the story is great. I have always loved the song and movie. I really enjoyed this books so much that I continued reading the series, The Christmas Blessing and The Christmas Hope. Each one gives a wonderful continuation of the story.
