The Bride Wore Black by Cornell Woolrich - (1940).
Noir. Recommended for fans of Noir-books and movies, like Jim Thompson, Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett among others.
As all other information and hints are missing, probably not the searched for book, but I want to throw it in anyway, as a suggestion for others.

Cathy | 108 comments Can you remember anything else about the book? It could be The Reluctant Widow by Georgette Heyer , which is tremendous fun -- penniless girl agrees to marry nasty elderly millionaire on his deathbed, and then all kinds of intrigue and romance ensue in the aftermath.
