Meera | 4365 comments Hey Purvi...Hi Sumit...Have a Good time in reading....

waiting to see ur selections!!

message 12: by Sumit (new)

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) Hey there, Purvi! Some of the books I found are common to our 'to-read' lists:

Heart of Darkness
Gone Girl
Of Mice and Men
All the Light We Cannot See
The Storyteller
No Country for Old Men

Lemme know if you want to pick any of these or suggest a different one too.

(I should have a LOT of time to read in November. I'm on leave for two weeks!)

message 13: by Purvika (new)

Purvika (frostybells) | 3067 comments How about we start with No Country for Old Men followed by Gone Girl

After that We will decide what to read further.

And do tell me what genre you prefer. I will form a list.

message 14: by Sumit (new)

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) Ok.. I'm actually starting Gone Girl today - want to read it before watching the film. :)

But, I can pick No Country for Old Men after that.

And once you create the list, we could then decide on further reads from there.

message 15: by Purvika (new)

Purvika (frostybells) | 3067 comments Then we can totally read gone girl before then no country for old men..

message 16: by Purvika (new)

I will have three weeks as well xD :P

message 19: by Purvika (new)

Purvika (frostybells) | 3067 comments Abhay wrote: "You guys starting gone girl first??"

Yup. I wanted to read this book since first buddy read :P when Vinny was reading it. But other books took its place...now time has come to go after Gone girl.

message 20: by Sumit (new)

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) Shin, I have heard of Purvi's legendary reading speed. :D

So, I told my boss that I NEED two weeks of leave to read a bit and save my name from being added to the list of slackers.

Seeing the gravity of the situation, he agreed.

message 21: by Purvika (new)

Purvika (frostybells) | 3067 comments It isn't legendary :O .... Just regular :D

Still you have nice boss if he/she giving you leave of two weeks ... I think we can easily fit at least 6 books xD what say !!!

Last time with shiny I read genre wise ...we covered almost all genre except nonfiction and horror. I don't read horrors and shiny wasn't in mood to read non fiction.

message 22: by Sumit (new)

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) *faints at the mention of 6 books*

Sure, suggest all the genres you want - I should be open to all/most except YA and romance.

message 23: by Purvika (new)

Purvika (frostybells) | 3067 comments Sumit wrote: "*faints at the mention of 6 books*

Oh we are in our 8th books with shiny :D Hahaha And you are fainting in 6 books :D you have two week holidays I remember :p

Lol... Don't worry I won't make you read YA :P

This is what I think we can try

Urban fantasy
Dystopian
Crime/ true crime
Mystery / thriller / suspense
Nonfiction/ memoir/ biographies.

So with Gone girl and no country for old men we cover two sets of genre here. Crime / mystery/ thriller / suspense.

We call read all books in these genre as well. Or other . whatever you prefer.

message 24: by Sumit (new)

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) *prepares for two weeks of slavery* :P

message 25: by Purvika (new)

Purvika (frostybells) | 3067 comments Hardly .... Have I said 8-10 books then you could count it in slavery... I am just saying at least 6 :P ok final 5 no less than this :D

And we should name our thread.

message 35: by Purvika (last edited Nov 04, 2014 12:13AM) (new)

Purvika (frostybells) | 3067 comments Sorry I couldn't come. Wasn't quite well. We should discuss Gone girl. And am so envious that you watched Gone girl. Lol. I am going to as well pretty soon :D so here are few questions.

Did you like the book ? I know you gave it 4 stars. I want to know is the books as a whole how was it ?
What about Amy and Nick before the last entry of diary and after.
Did you like the way it ended ?
Do you think this story showed the incompetency of the Force. And made a point that people could actually commit a crime and even get away with it which I know is true in some cases. What are your thoughts about all the scenes and planning ?

Also are you happy with the end ?

And lastly is movie better than book ?

message 36: by Purvika (last edited Nov 04, 2014 01:16AM) (new)

Purvika (frostybells) | 3067 comments Also I would like to say... We should create a list what we will read further as I might go missing for a day or to due to health issue. As we had already planned we will be reading No Country for Old Men. After that this is the list I have come up. Ohk before that. I will be starting the glass castle soon and if you are interested in it we could buddy read it or I'll put it on hold for next month. Ok now the list I came up with
The Innocent

The Lost Testament

The Man Who Loved Books Too Much: The True Story of a Thief, a Detective, and a World of Literary Obsession

There was this true crime I forgot name ...will check and add... Tell me if any interest you. I'll add few more to list next time I come online.

message 37: by Sumit (new)

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) What happened to your health? :O Take care and get well soon!

Let's take up Glass Castle and No Country for Old Men. After that, we'll take it as it comes.

And here are my answers to your questions:

Did you like the book ? I know you gave it 4 stars. I want to know is the books as a whole how was it ?
I think it was a really good book. If it had been a bit shorter and crisper, it might even have been a great (i.e. a 5-star book).

What about Amy and Nick before the last entry of diary and after.
It didn't change things for me too much. But yes, I will always think of the book as 'horror' because nothing can be scarier than living in a constant state of fear around your spouse. Nick is doomed! For life!

Did you like the way it ended ?
Loved it!

Do you think this story showed the incompetency of the Force. And made a point that people could actually commit a crime and even get away with it which I know is true in some cases. What are your thoughts about all the scenes and planning ?

I wouldn't call the force incompetent. I think they were just dealing with a very clever psychopath. They did the best they could, under the circumstances. Amy was brilliant. Insane, but brilliant.

Also are you happy with the end ?
(view spoiler)

And lastly is movie better than book ?
NO WAY! Ben Affleck is useless, and the movie doesn't have any of the depth that the book has.

message 38: by Purvika (last edited Nov 04, 2014 09:10AM) (new)

Purvika (frostybells) | 3067 comments Nothing drastic... Just minimal issues with paranoid father xD.

Well then both books are fine with me.

I agree with you about Nick. He surely is doomed and as Go said it isn't even clear who will kill whom first in the span of 18 years. What a life. Seriously. But, compared to the book, ending looked rather pale to me. Maybe I had expected Nick to turn into a psychopath himself. Tragically it never happened.

About the cops. Comeon they had FBI. Don't you think they certainly know how to deal with a psychopath. In fact I think Amy was not that neat. A able FBI would have understood the crime scene without any problems. And they didn't even trace his link to Andy. It was as if they from the start wanted to peg Him as killer. So I found FBI pretty dull and useless.

Oh And I always want the antagonist to be royally screwed. That to big Time :D xD

And oh please ! Ben affleck useless? Such tragedy that is. Do tell me did he totally ruined the "sinister smile" and "bully look" that was Nick's trademark?

message 39: by Purvika (new)

Purvika (frostybells) | 3067 comments Hi, I finished No country for old men and am 25% down in the glass castle ... How far you are ?

message 40: by Sumit (new)

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) *faints*

I've been socialising all morning, and movie-watching all afternoon. Let's see if I can read a bit today.

Also, Ben Affleck totally killed the sinister smile. He was just too wooden.
