Steph (angel4492) | 28453 comments Hiya, Team Caps! Thanks for volunteering to guide your team through a round of BookShelf Bingo!

Your job, should you choose to accept it, will require a few things:
1 ~ Be our go-to person should we have any questions about your team
2 ~ Organize your teammate's weekly reads for each shelf/category so that the BSB Ninjas can quickly and easily verify and approve your stamp request(s)
3 ~ Encourage and motivate your team (you may also ask to borrow Judithe's whip whenever necessary)
4 ~ Post regularly to ensure your team is communicating and on track each week (Send them a PM and friendly poke if they haven't posted at least once a week, noted their book choice, and/or appear to have dropped out of webspace)
5 ~ Send us a PM (Steph, Sandra or Judithe) should you need us for any reason throughout the game

Steph (angel4492) | 28453 comments Hi, y'all! I can be captain, if no one else is interested.

Thankfully, I use a computer app (BookPedia) to keep track of my books. With it I can sort by title, author, series, etc. Only problem, I haven't added every Amazon freebie I've grabbed and I haven't taken the time to add all of them here on GR either. Thankfully, Amazon lets you sort by title or author name using "manage your content and devices".

If you want to be captain, that's great. I know you get lots of help from all the fantastic mods, but if you're going to be busy, I don't mind being the captain, I've done it in the past.

Steph (angel4492) | 28453 comments I'm in 29 Palms, CA, Mandy. Middle of the desert.

I should be able to keep up with it, Daffodil, but if I find myself falling behind I may ask for your help.

I've been having problems with GR for more than a month. I haven't been receiving any GR mail - no updates from groups, new releases, nothing. :/ I've been working with tech support, but so far everything we've tried hasn't helped. If you notice I haven't posted where I'm needed that's why. I check unread threads every day, in hopes of catching everything.

Thanks for sending Lauren a message. Hopefully she'll pop in today. Shelves will be announced tomorrow morning. I should get them up on/around 9am (CA Time).

I have efreebie shelves (one for each place where I grabbed 'um) on my profile, if anyone's interested in looking at them. I don't have all of my Amazon freebies there though; I've been too lazy to add them all.

Okay, so is everyone good with FREEdom Readers as our team name?

Don't forget to start thinking about your Free Space book. Be sure to include which option you used to find your chosen book. I'll be tracking our reads here.

Review: Great start to a series. I liked the characters and the story flowed well. I've not read any of Eve Langlais books before, but I'll definitely be looking for more.

Danielle Book Boss (daniellebookboss) | 964 comments Daffodil Eve Langlais is a good choice if you want a nice and fluffy read after something heavy. I like her furry United coalition series. Especially since she uses a diverse range of characters as well as shifters.

message 40: by Daffodil (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments I'm definitely willing to purchase books of hers in the future. So I guess the free offering worked the way it's supposed too. LOL. I have one other free kindle book of hers, A Demon and His Witch (Welcome to Hell, #1) by Eve Langlais , which I'll probably read soon. I may use it for my Free Space read.

message 41: by Steph, Just keep swimming … (last edited Oct 30, 2014 02:25PM) (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 28453 comments I love Eve's books; always a quick, sexy read. Other similar-ish authors I've read/liked: Vivi Andrews and Mina Carter.

I started reading Budget Body Movers (Blood Circle, #1) by Hillary Stone and it reads like a debut book for the author (not sure if it is or not), but it's a quick read so far.

message 42: by Daffodil (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments B Candy Store by Bella Andre Candy Store, Bella Andre, 10-30-14
Rating: 2 stars
Review: Derek teaching Callie how to drink tequila was the best scene in the book. Unfortunately the rest of the book didn't quite reach the promise of their initial meeting. They ended up having a quickie in the commercial refrigerator, neither romantic nor sexy. None of the remaining sex scenes were any better. I also didn't feel any emotional connection between the two characters. I believed Callie's love for her Candy Store better than her attachment to Derek.

Steph (angel4492) | 28453 comments Budget Body Movers (Blood Circle, #1) by Hillary Stone
Shelf: 'ER'
Read: 30 Oct
Rating: 2 (generous) stars
Review:
Lucky has quit her job as a school teacher to take over the family business, Budget Body Movers, following the loss of her mother and uncle in a car accident. Makes sense, but what doesn't is this:
She'd never wanted to be involved in Budget Body Movers when her Uncle Fred and her mom were alive. But when they died she felt obligated to resign her teaching job and give it a shot. At the time she'd thought it would be a great way to conquer her fear of dead people. She certainly didn't need the money. They'd left her over two million dollars in life insurance.
This really doesn't make sense. Why does she need to conquer her fear of dead people? Because it fits the intended storyline. Why quit a job she loved to take over a job she never had any interest in doing, especially when she had $2M? Because it fits the intended storyline.

There were three things I liked about Budget Body Movers: the title, the cover and the concept. Unfortunately, the characters were flat and the story was predictable. In all honesty, if I hadn't chosen to read this as part of a challenge, I would have stopped around 25% into it.

While others may find it an enjoyable read I found it to be simply a quick read. Had the characters been more developed and the writing more polished, this definitely might have been a series I'd follow.

Lauren (laurenjberman) The Merzetti Effect by Norah Wilson
Shelf #1: ER
Book: The Merzetti Effect by Norah Wilson
Read: Nov 1st, 2014
Rating: 3 Stars
Review:

Delano Bowen, a physician and a centuries old vampire, has dedicated his life to the search for a vaccine for vampirism. His research focuses on a genetic mutation found only in the Merzetti family, whose blood is capable of reversing the vampire virus. Ainsley Crawford, a nurse and the last known Merzetti, is lured into assisting Delano with his work, but soon becomes the target of his enemies who are determined to prevent the development of the cure.

The basic plot premise has potential, unfortunately, the writing is clinical and the medical jargon is excessive. This results in a book that reads more like an article in a medical journal. The romance lacks originality and is quite similar to Lynsay Sands’ How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire sans the humor.

The characters are well-developed although Delano’s (not a fan of that name) whole “the ends justify the means” spiel is just an excuse for lying to the heroine about everything! Moreover, the fact that he is so casual and blasé about (view spoiler) detracts from his hero status.

Ainsley is a spirited and likable heroine, however, her naïveté and liberal outlook on life means she is far too trusting and even a little gullible.

The villain is a real nasty piece of work, but there is virtually no detail on his background or relationship with Delano and the tension in this subplot feels forced.

All in all, a solid first book that works despite its problems.

Steph (angel4492) | 28453 comments LOL! Yeah, this game is definitely going to help me thin my freebie TBR stacks! I'll either read some or permanently avoid some. :)

I'll update our list with your review on Monday, Lauren.

Hope everyone who celebrated had a safe and happy Halloween! We ran out of candy in 30 min. Soooo many little goblins around here; some super cute costumes and some I couldn't figure out. Does anyone dress up for parties or TorT with their little people?

Happy weekend & happy reading!

Mandy (thereadingdiaries) | 195 comments Shelf #2: B
Book: The Council (Darkness, #5) by K.F. Breene
Read: Nov 1st, 2014
Rating: 5 Stars
Review:

I received The Council in return for an honest review from the author. Sasha & Stefan are back this time they are headed to the council to get approval that will make it all official. For the next two weeks they will each be tested on their own. While Stefan faces off using his fighting skills it will be up to Sasha to use her skills with magic. Together they will have to fight each challenge hoping to win the approval of the council and Sasha the clutch.
Thankfully the duo won’t have to face the challenges alone they will be joined by her adopted father Dominicous and Toa as well as the shifters. However things aren’t all great at the council, there are those who hope to take Sasha for their own. As well as a few prisoners holding grudges. When Stefan is kidnapped by their past it’s up to Sasha to save him. Will the council accept them? What about the shifters? Will Sasha find Stefan before the past catch up with them?
I really like Sasha she’s living in a world of fantasy but she’s taking to it really well and found what she was always missing in life. She’s found the family she never had as well as love. She’s come a long way from the mage who couldn’t learn from classes growing with each novel. I love Stefan he’s the idea hero in any book even if she gets the save the day they work well as a team. I also love a lot of the supporting characters like Charles, Anna, Tim, Toa, Dominicous and of course Jonas he’s grown on me.
The Council is the 5th installment in the Darkness series and very well might be my favorite of the series so far. I like the unique spin on the vampire concept at least they don’t’ sparkle like other vampires. I also like the integration of the witches, shapeshifters, demons, and mages. The council is an action packed novel loaded with steamy moments and fighting. It’s a quick read and easy to finish in a few short hours. I can’t wait to see what will happen next to Sasha and Stefan now that his people are starting to accept her. It does hint at adult situations but I think the author had done a tasteful job conveying the story. I honestly love the characters and the story my only complaint is they are to quick I want longer books because I enjoy the world they live in.
