Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 425 comments I finished Delta Wedding by Eudora Welty. It was ok, but I much prefer her short stories.

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 1379 comments Alice I never read that book called The English Patient

message 1712: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 425 comments I finished An Orchestra of Minorities by Chigozie Obioma.

A very powerful, complex, and compelling novel. Obioma skillfully weaves Igbo cosmology throughout the narrative. It's a heartbreaking novel. I loved The Fishermen but I think this is a stronger novel. It's certainly more complex.

message 1713: by Markus (new)

Markus | 56 comments Currently reading:
- Creating Character Arcs: The Masterful Author's Guide to Uniting Story Structure, Plot, and Character Development - Finding it very helpful, as I didn't know much about the topic beforehand. It's making me realize the novel I wrote for NaNoWriMo needs a major rewrite.
- A Wizard of Earthsea - The style doesn't really fit my taste, but she's a good writer and I'm still enjoying elements of it.
- The Spy - Barely started on it, but like it so far. I usually enjoy his books.

message 1718: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) Gave up on rereading The Name of the Rose. I'd gotten maybe 20% in, and life is just too demanding right now, so I read the last couple of chapters, and sent it back to our little library before the three-week notice shows up.

I enjoyed it the first time, but that was years ago; I'll take it out and read the middle one of these days.

Surprisingly, since we moved, I've polished off a bunch of books - or returned them unfinished - because it's so easy to stop and gather a couple. I walk right past the library several times a week.

message 1722: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinsreads) I just finished Room and it left me wanting more as it was lacking for some components. An interesting concept but a disappointing and boring read.

I will now start Red Dragon

message 1723: by Othello (new)

Othello Gomes | 1 comments I just finished reading The Present Age by Soren Kierkegaard. I had some trouble understanding it at first as I was going through some good amount of stress for a while; however, in a calm mood, it was quite a journey, I must say. The Present Age by Søren Kierkegaard

I'm currently indecisive on what to start next, but for the meanwhile, I've been reading some short stories by Franz Kafka. The Complete Stories

message 1724: by Tamara (last edited Feb 04, 2019 12:13PM) (new)

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 425 comments I read Phantastes by George MacDonald.

It's about a young man's journey in Fairy Land. It's got goblins, trees that try to snarl you, fairies, knights, a beautiful lady frozen in marble, a magic castle, and all manner of fantastical things. There's no logic to it. You have to surrender to the experience--sort of like falling into a dream. Some of you may enjoy it, but it just wasn't for me.

message 1728: by Theresa (new)

Theresa (theresa99) | 535 comments Just finished Undone (Rise of the Masks Book 3) by EM Kaplan and Revenge of the Witch (The Rise of Orion Book 3) by J.M. Davies . Both were good installments in their respective series. Not sure what I'm going to read next.

message 1729: by Barry (new)

Barry | 1 comments Just read The Winter Soldier by Daniel Mason. Great historical fiction book of an interesting time in history, a peek into old medical techniques, and a charming love story.

message 1730: by James (new)

James Marcus | 1 comments I am reading the Elfstones of Shannara by Terry Brooks. Out the first 2 books in his original trilogy I'd have to say this one is the best and most unique to him.

Jeff I just finished The Three Secret Cities by fellow Aussie author Matthew Reilly. Classic Reilly: a page-turning, over-the-top, action-packed read.

message 1733: by J. (new)

J. (jdrew) | 153 comments Reading “Haunted Lakes” by Frederick Stonehouse. I am a sucker for Great Lakes shipwreck books but this is the first time I ever read one that is about legends, ghosts and ghost ships. The author does not claim these are all factual history but that they are tales told around the lakes.

message 1734: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) | 165 comments Finished The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje. I had a hard time trying to connect with the characters, but they failed to strike a chord in me. I gave the novel 3 stars.

Pam Baddeley | 683 comments Read book 6 of Barbara Hambly's vampire series, Darkness on his Bones and reviewed it, explaining why I won't be bothering with any more of these - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2699418073.

message 1736: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 425 comments I read The Bastard of Istanbul by Elif Shafak. I thought it was well done. It's about an Armenian and a Turkish family whose lives intertwine in unexpected ways. It was stronger than Shafak's Three Daughters of Eve and probably as good as her The Architect's Apprentice.

My four star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 1748: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 425 comments I read Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. It's about a post-apocalypse world. It's not the type of novel I normally read, but it came highly recommended. So I gave it a try.

I thought it was fantastic. I loved the structure and the way the author weaves all the disparate threads together to create a vibrant tapestry.

message 1749: by J. (new)

J. Rubino (jrubino) Several books lately. I read William Landay's "Defending Jacob" (another book club pick) that I thought was pretty much "The Bad Seed" meets "Before and After." Then I read "The Woman in the Window", which was a bestseller, and I think was optioned for film. That one was pretty much the movie "Rear Window" meets the movie "Copycat", a quick, somewhat predictable read.
Rereading "Wedlock", nonfiction about England's wealthiest woman, her disastrous marriage to, and divorce from, a fortune hunter.
Also read Jane Harper's "Force of Nature", the follow up to her debut, "The Dry." Liked it a lot - she writes very well. This would would make a solid film.
