The book series I'm trying to find was one I read in the early nineties - around '94-'95. Even then it felt like the book was old - seemed to be set in the 50s or 60s. I think i recall it being hardback bound with some linecut illustrations It was maybe shelved near Encyclopedia Brown (not alphabetically) but was spiritually similar. It followed a young boy who moved to a rural setting in the US to be with an avuncular figure - maybe an uncle or grandfather. He had a dog and a best friend who was a girl. I remember a specific story in one book (and each book had a few chapters - each a different adventure during the summer months) where they thought they'd struck oil but had actually just dug into the uncles oil reservoir. I think they used a dowsing rod to find it.

Any help appreciated!

SamSpayedPI | 2334 comments The Henry Reed series, perhaps, beginning with Henry Reed, Inc..

It wasn't set in the midwest; it was rural New Jersey near Princeton, but the other details match. His parents are in the diplomatic services, and Henry flies to the U.S. to stay with his aunt and uncle during the summers. The dog is named Agony; the girl is Midge.

Thank you so very much.
