Chris glanced around still outside the truck, where was that sister of his?! He helped her out of the truck and spun her around "how about a dance my lovely?" He said spinning her in the hospital parking lot while texting his sister and Andrew to get there! 'The birthday is outside where is the surprise?'

Laila raised her eyebrow. He sure was acting weird! But she didn't object, and she spun into his arms, dancing. A small whimper and a yelp came from the other side of the truck, and Laila stopped, frowning. "Funny... I swear I heard a..." Krissy stepped out from around the tailgate, a small wiggly black puppy in her arms. She held it up to Laila. "He's for you." She said, a big grin on her face. Andrew stepped out behind her, his smile soft. Laila's eyes teared up and she smiled, running to embrace both of them, the puppy in the middle of the hug circle. "I don't know what to say!" She exclaimed, scooping the puppy into her arms. He licked her cheek and she laughed. "Was this you Andrew?" she asked, wondering who had known that she had always wanted a dog.
Andrew shook his head chuckling and motioned to Chris "It was all your boy, he knew what kind you wanted and when your birthday was. It's also adopted so it didn't go through puppy mills." Chris smiled loving to watch her nuzzle the dog, he cleared his throat "there's a part two...' He motioned to the ribbon around the puppies neck where a house key dangled "your apartment doesn't allow dogs...so Kris and I were hoping that you'd move in?"
Laila's heart melted as she watched the small thing wriggle in her hands. And Chris had known she liked labs! When she saw the house key, and heard what he was offering, she squeaked, putting the puppy down in Krissy's arms as she leaped into Chris's, wrapping her arms and legs around him, hugging him tight. "Of course I will!" she kissed his cheek. After their hospital visit, she couldn't imagine living without him. "Thank you. For everything." she whispered, smiling softly. She didn't care if Kriss and her brother were watching, she had to steal a quick kiss.
Chris nodded and kissed her softly tapping her nose as he let her down "he needs a name." He reminded and smiled at Krissy who was just as in love with the dog as Laila was. He was going to propose but it wasn't time for that, small steps he had time, they were happy at this part of their lives.Andrew hugged her tightly "Happy Birthday Goose." He handed her a card "my gift is coming later...but this was mailed to me. Guess he didn't know your address." He said handing her the faded purple envelope with the almost non-readable handwriting.
Laila turned around and looked at the little black thing in Krissy's arms and she smiled softly. "Any suggestions Krissy?" She asked, wanting the girl to have a part in the puppy she obviously loved as well. "Munchkin." She said promptly. "Because he's such a cute little munchkin. We can call him Kin for short."Laila laughed then, shaking her head as Andrew hugged her. She hugged him back. "Thanks big brother." She whispered, meaning it. She didn't know how she would have made it this far without him. When he handed her the envelope, she knew who it was from, so she just nodded and slipped it in her back pocket, deciding to read it later when she was alone. "Thank you everyone. This has been the best birthday surprise ever."
Chris smiled and pecked her cheek "Happy Birthday my beautiful girl, I love you..." he whispered in her ear and kissed her shoulder "We are going to the Lake House right now..." he said honestly "Andrew is going to watch Krissy and little munchkin." he said with a smile "I have your things all packed and when your ready we can go."
Laila blushed, leaning against him as she slipped her arm around him and smiled. Her smile only grew as he told her of their plans, until she was beaming. "Could this day get any better?" She asked. She ran over to Andrew and hugged him. "Thanks for agreeing to this." She said, and then ruffled Krissy's hair. "And don't give him too much trouble ok?"Krissy grinned, kissing Munchkin. "I wont. Have fun..." She teased. Laila chuckled, shaking her head, but her face was pink. "Cheeky." She said, elbowing her.
She walked back over to Chris and smiled. "I'm ready."
Chris smiled and hugged his sister "You be good, make sure to feed and walk Munchkin everyday." he said seriously and pecked her cheek "We'll be back in a couple of days, I expect a daily text and an overview on your homework got it?" he asked with a raised brow and smiled ruffling her hair before going over to his love and helping her into the truck. "If I forgot anything there's little stores around so you can get whatever you need, I just wanted it as a surprise."
Krissy nodded eagerly, smiling up at her brother. "I promise." She agreed, standing back as they got into the car. "Have fun." She called, standing beside Andrew. Laila smiled and waved to them both as she got in, and did her seatbelt up. She smiled over at him, nodding. "This is the most wonderful surprise." She said honestly. "Thank you so much.", she reached over to kiss his cheek and then smiled. "So where is this lake house of yours, exactly?"
Chris smiled and pecked her lips quickly as he got the truck started and headed to the highway "It's down the canyon, near this secret lake my dad took me to when I was a boy...I bought it when my dad left planning on burning it to the ground. Instead I fixed it up and it became my sanctuary from everything."
Laila listened to his tale in interest, and when he finished, she nodded in understanding. "Sounds like a nice little place." she said, smiling then. She couldn't believe she was actually going on a trip with Chris, just him and her, they would finally get to have some time off. As he drove, Laila pulled out the letter from her brother, deciding that now would be a good a time as ever to read it. She opened the envelope and pulled out the note.
The card was simple, a drawing that he had done years ago. But as you opened it became more 3-D like a pop-up. One simple violet which was her favorite flower became a bouquet. 'Happy Birthday Laila Lu, I hope that you look at our wishing star tonight as we did as kids...wishing for ponies and our real parents to find us. I wish for you to find happiness and that one day we will see eachother again. Mali'
Laila looked at the card in wonder, and she shook her head. Only her brother could make something like this. She read the short note and found herself tearing up, for it reminded her of the Malibu she used to know, the happy boy who wouldn't let her do anything, no matter how stupid, alone. The Mali she had known before he had abandoned her. Laila tucked the card back into its envelope and clutched it in her hands. She had not sent him anything today. She had not sent him anything for their last birthday either. That was the day he had returned, and it was the day after she had given up. The three years before then, she had sent out unreturned cards everyday, leaving calls on his cellphone, hoping he would respond. He never did.
Chris glanced over at her and saw the tears he pulled over to a trucker stop to just let her have some time. He knew that she wouldn't want to talk and he knew not to ask any questions. He took her hand and caressed it softly trying to be helpful but knowing only Mali could fix this. He pecked her temple "Andrew gave me his phone number...do you want to call him?" He asked softly.
Laila chewed her bottom lip. She held Chris's hand as she thought. Everything in her screamed to ignore him, and give him what he deserved, but her heart ached for her twin. If anything but to not have a guilty conscience, she knew she had to wish him a happy birthday. So she nodded slowly. "Alright." She agreed, taking the phone number and tapping it into her cellphone. She got out of the truck and paced around outside, listening to the phone ring. Please be the answering machine... please please be the answering machine.....
Mali answered after maybe the fourth ring "hello?" He asked not recognizing the phone number. They had both gotten new cell phones in the years where there was no contact. Chris waited and let her talk to him in private, he was grateful that there was finally going to be some contact and to fix this mess. He tapped on the steering wheel to the beat of the music playing softly as he watched the truckers go in and out of the diner.
Laila cringed in anticipation when the ringing stopped and the phone clicked as someone picked up the other line. But when Mali's voice came on, she froze, surprised. She wasn't quite sure how she would feel, speaking to him after all these years, but she certainly hadn't anticipated how much more mature he sounded. But she could still tell it was him. After a moment, Laila coughed softly, trying to get herself breathing again. "Um.... yeah.... hi." she started rather hesitantly. "It's Laila..... I...." she scuffed her toe against the gravel in the driveway. "I guess I'm... calling to say Happy birthday...." she finally managed. "Because... Uh... yeah. Cause its our birthday.... and um... well yeah. That's what you say on someone's birthday... I guess." She shrugged. "Ok... that's all I had to say..." She reached up to hang up again.
Mali couldn't contain the surprise and happuness he felt when he heard his sister's voice he knew she was going to hang up so he quickly spoke "Laila! Wait please...I want to talk to you, I've missed you...I know it was wrong of me to disappear but I want to explain...you only had the fact that I didn't return any of your calls and cards and I'm sorry...I wasn't allowed to.@ he tried to explain "I just want to talk...can we have dinner? I can't explain over the phone."
Laila closed her eyes, trying to keep from crying over the phone. She had so many emotions flying around at once it was overwhelming. "I..." Her voice cracked and she swallowed. Why should she give him a chance? She certainly didn't think he deserved one. But she was not heartless. And she certainly wasn't going to become what he had been when he was gone. But that didn't change her not being able to talk to him at the moment. "I... I'm on the way to spend a few days at a cottage with my boyfriend..." She admitted. "It's... really not the greatest time." She and Chris were supposed to be spending time together, it certainly wasn't the time to go running off on him.
Mali smiled glad that she had a boyfriend "oh that's fine, I'm glad he's taking you somewhere fun for your birthday. How about next weekend? I actually live now pretty close to your university. Andrew knows the address." He sighed "I'm really glad you called Lu, I missed you like a fat kid misses twinkles."
Laila chewed her tongue for a minute. Did she really want to see her brother face to face again? No. Yes. No. Yes. No.... yes. She swallowed, nodding slowly. "Alright." She said softly, barely containing her emotions. She couldn't believe that he had missed her, when she hadn't gotten one word from him. But that he said he did made her wish it was true. "I'll stop by next weekend then." she agreed, smiling weakly at his joke. "Goodbye Mali." she whispered, and hung up the phone. She looked at the sky, blinking a couple times to make the tears go away, and then composed herself, hopping back into Chris's truck. "I'm going to go see him next weekend." she said, so he wouldn't have to ask.
Chris smiled and hugged her tightly, he couldn't be happier for her now that this grudge was being released. "I can't wait to meet him, I'll make sure I'm not working." He put on his sunglasses ready to drive again but he had to make sure she was ok "how are you feeling about this?"
Laila nodded then, smiling a little. "Ok. But be warned. I wouldn't put it past him to try and steal you from me." she said, smiling lightly. "He always stole my stuff when we were kids." she chewed her lip, thinking about when Mali and her used to be good. She wasn't in danger of crying anymore, but it was still a lot to think about. "Nervous." She admitted. "Nervous that he'll just make excuses for why it was ok for him to be gone." she admitted. "It wasn't ok for him to leave..." She added more softly. She shook her head again, glancing outside at the setting sun on the canyon. "But I'll be ok. Is your place nearby?"
Chris nodded and went through the winding canyon and woods to the small cabin, the sun was setting over the lake painting it orange and pink. He smiled squeezing her hand and kissing it "just in time." He said grabbing their luggage and opening the door leading them inside. He flipped on the lights and smiled "make yourself at home, the pantry is full...the fridge will be when we go shopping tomorrow and our bedroom is just down the hall."
Laila hopped out of the car, marvelling at how gorgeous the lake was in the setting sun. She smiled softly, anticipating being able to swim in it, hopefully. She moved into the house just as the crickets started chirping and the mosquitos came out. She looked around the cute little place, which smelled musty like most cottages do, and she smiled. "This is such a sweet place." She said, trailing her fingers over the wood walls as she moved into the bedroom. It was such a cute little cottage, and she found herself smiling. She knew she would enjoy staying here. She looked out the windows as the stars started to come out, and then smiled back at Chris. "Any plans for tonight?" Wondering if he had anything planned for them to do.
Chris flushed as he shook away the thought he had and smiled "I've got a constellation map." He opened the drawer picking it up. He motioned for her to follow him back out to the deck where a hammic lay, he crawled up and motioned for her to lay by him as he gave her the map "I'll turn off all the lights and we can look at the stars, you've never seen so many in your life Lai...its magical to say the least." He said honestly and sprayed the area with bug repellant.
Laila followed him out onto the deck, curious. She climbed up into the hammock with him slowly, so that it didn't rock too much and dump them out, and then lay by his side, her head resting on his shoulder. She took the map and stared at in interest. There were so many stars depicted on here... with the deck light on, it certainly didn't look like there were that many up above their heads... there couldn't be that many. She raised an eyebrow, looking over at him in disbelief. "Ok... show me this magic you speak of." she challenged, wishing to see the masses of stars that he had just described.
Chris smiled and slowly got off so it didn't spill her out as he turned off the house light and then smiled knowingly and turned off the deck one completely dousing them in darkness except for his flashlight. The milky way was right above their head and he smirked "that magical enough for you?" He asked teasingly crawling back into the hamic with her and nuzzling her.
Laila was watching the sky in expectation when it suddenly exploded with a million little glittering lights and she gasped, her eyes widening as she tried to take in each one. "Wow..." she breathed, just staring. It was probably one of the most beautiful things she had ever seen. She had never even imagined that there would be this many stars. She beamed over at Chris, moving so she could lay her head on him again. "Yes, this is quite magical." She agreed. She beamed as she recognized a couple constellations. "There's the big dipper." she pointed. "And there's Orion." She looked down at the star map, before look up again. "And.... there's the little dipper."
Chris chuckled watching her face and loving the wonder and passion her eyes showed. He kissed her gently and smiled "that's right..." He nuzzled her cheek and looked up with her "my favorite star is way over there see that bright shining one?" He said pointing to a specific one "that's the one im saving up to name..." He said honestly and smiled at her "ever since I was a kid I wanted to name a star..."
Laila looked where his finger was pointing and her smile brightened. "It's beautiful..." She breathed, marvelling at how bright the single star was. She turned so she could kiss the side of his mouth. "I think its very cute that you used to stare at the stars as a kid." She said honestly. She pointed to another star that seemed to be out on its own in the inky darkness. "That one there is Mali and my wishing star." she said, smiling softly. She loved watching the stars as a kid, and she was happy that Chris had the same passion. She turned to look at him again, smiling a little. "Thank you, Chris, for taking me out here. It'll be really nice to have some time off with you." She whispered, not wanting to disturb the stillness of the night.
Chris smiled and looked out at her wishing star "that one does seem to be the perfect wishing star..." He said honestly and took her hand kissing it as he pressed his body closer to hers that they were entangled and kissed her deeply "yeah....I agree..." He admitted softly, the crickets were serenating them he couldn't have asked for a more romantic moment "I love you..." He whispered in her ear kissing under if softly.
Laila smiled lightly at his approval of her wishing star. She was about to say something else when he moved closer and kissed her searingly. She was rather out of breath after such a passionate kiss, and her whole body tingled in every place they were touching. She wasn't sure if she felt panicked, or desperate to be closer to him. She shivered when he kissed under her ear, but she found her body melting entirely on its own, her head tilting a little. "I... I love you too." She managed to whisper. She had never reacted this way to anyone before.
Chris knew he had to slow down, she wasn't ready for this kind of intensity. He sighed breathing in her scent "I'm sorry...I just...you make me..." He tried to explain breathless as he took her hand, as long as he had his hand in hers he felt stronger and more in control. He would wait, he couldn't lose control just because they were alone and romantic.
Laila just panted for a moment to catch her breath, and then she nodded in understanding. She tucked her head under his chin, trying to gain stock about how she felt about all this. She certainly hadn't thought she'd ever want this with another man again, but... what she had felt just now... hadn't been entirely unpleasant. "I understand." She whispered, acutely aware of how close they still were. She figured the best way to go about this would be to talk about it honestly with him, so he knew where she was coming from. "I... I'm not entirely opposed to... to doing..." she found her self blushing. "Well... that... with you Chris... I just. We need to take it slow. You seeing me naked still makes me a little nervous." she admitted honestly. "But... but what we just did felt good too." She was blushing very hard now.
Chris nodded completely understanding and respecting her, he kissed her nose and just cuddled "then slow is how we'll take this...you take the lead darling and you let me know if I'm ever doing something that makes you uncomfortable." He promised and nuzzled her hand chuckling "I've seen you a couple of times love but I understand...I love you and I know you've been hurt..." He kissed her knuckles "I can sleep out here and you on the bed if that makes you feel better..."
Laila nodded, feeling good that he agreed to that, and was willing. She relaxed against him, feeling much more comfortable now that she knew they could go slow and wouldn't rush into it. She blushed a little at his comment, and found herself smiling. "Yeah... but we've never been naked at the same time or anything." She pointed out. Then she smiled a little wider. "Nonsense, there is no need for that." she assured. "I've slept in your arms before." She reminded, kissing his chin. "You must think me incredibly naive." she said then, remembering how much more experience he had had than she.
Chris shook his head and smiled "innocent and sweet, never naive. He promised and kissed her softly on the cheek and watched the stars some more "ignore the condoms in the bathroom." He said remembering that he had left a box in there and that was incredibly awkward. He laughed to himself "maybe I should become celibate..." He said to himself and played with her hand "Krissy wanted to make the puppy a proposal puppy...I told her it wasn't time for that yet, I think she really wants you as a sister."
Laila smiled softly, feeling a little better. She shifted so they were in a more comfortable position side by side and watching the stars. She blushed at his next comment and shook her head. "Yeah. Ok. I'll ignore your condoms in the bathroom." She said, shaking her head a little and she couldn't help but laugh. Then she shook her head. "No you shouldn't especially not now that we're in a relationship." She said seriously. "But if we ever break up for some drastic reason, then sure, please become celibate." She joked. Her eyes grew soft at what he said about Krissy and she smiled. "That girl is so sweet. She already is my sister, really, just not legally yet."
Chris shook his head "I don't plan on breaking up with you Laila, and I'm certaintly not going to date after you. Krissy would make sure of that, and we'd come up with some elaborate way of getting you back." He smiled and took her hand squeezing it "eventually we will be, but I'm ok with waiting...I never was ok with young marriages." He said honestly and kissed her knuckles "I want to travel with you and try new things before we settle down with kids."
Laila laughed easily then. "Kidnap me would you?" She teased, raising an eyebrow at him. She was glad inside, that he was as serious about this as she was. Then she smiled and nodded, agreeing completely with that. "We could travel the world." She agreed. "Learn a new language together, camp up in the Alps." She kissed his cheek. "And then we would have a family and Krissy would terrorize them all." She laughed softly, thinking about that. After a moment of silence, Laila looked over at him hesitantly. She knew they had to start somewhere, and the bugs were starting to get worse. "Lets go inside and have hot chocolate." She suggested. "Then I want you to teach me how to kiss properly. Like you just did." She said seriously. "We can consider it step one."
Chris nodded and helped her off the hamic and smiled taking everything back inside and flipping on the lights. He searched the shelves for hot cocoa mix but couldn't find any. He frowned pondering what to do and then smiled grabbing smore supplies and taking the grate off the stove making a live flame. He smiled over at her "ever made indoor s'mores?" He put a marshmellow on a cooking stick and started to cook it "how do you like your mallows?"
Laila followed him back inside, rubbing her arms as it had chilled slightly as the night air cooled the world. She watched with interest as he got out chocolate and gram crackers, and her eyes lit on the marshmallows. "Not indoor, no." She admitted. She moved over to the stove and watched as he put the marshmallow over the fire. "Um... golden brown." she decided. "If you can manage that." She challenged, grinning at him. It was always hard to get the mallows right between undercooked and charred, a challenge she always took, as she liked them perfect, and she was interested to see if he could do it.
Chris laughed "ah you doubt my amazing skills do you?" He shook his head amused as he slowly turned the marshmellow getting it perfect through timed turns and managed to make it beautifully golden. He grabbed the gram cracker and stuck the chocolate on the gram and then carefully pulled it off the stake and handed it to her since he was sure she liked to smush the sandwich as much as he did. He grabbed his marshmellow and cut a slit at the top as he slipped the chocolate inside the mallow and then made sure it caught on fire before blowing it out and eating it on the gram.
Laila watched him roast her marshmallow to perfection and she grinned, elbowing him. "Show-off." she teased, sticking the marshmallow on a gram, adding the chocolate, and then making a sandwich of it all, watching as she squished it into a nice goopy sugary mess. "Lovely." She said, eating the whole thing in two sticky bites. She gave him a thumbs up and then finished the sweet snack, beaming. "That was tasty." She said, having watched in interest at how he cooked his s'more with the chocolate inside. "That's new." She commented, sitting down on the couch and patting her satisfied stomach. "Never thought of making them that way before."
Chris chuckked "when I was a kid I wanted to be a s'more chef. To open my own s'more shop with different flavors and ways to cook the marshmellow. I did it for my family and they thought it was cute but not profitable." He smirked "I tried making a stand outside my house to sell them and the whole thing caught on fire from the Bunsen burner I was using." He sat by her and smiled kissing off the sticky mess from her face "so you want lessons?@
Laila listened to him talk about s'mores and his passion as a kid, and she giggled by the end of it. "Poor little Chris, his dreams gone up in flames." she said, licking her lips. "You certainly are welcome to make more of those for me." She said, grinning at him. "I'll taste test all your inventions." She laughed softly. She closed her eyes when he kissed her and she nodded slowly. "Yes." She said before she could change her mind, for she did want to make an effort. "And don't you dare laugh at how horrible I am." She said, shooting him a look, even though her eyes were smiling.
Chris laughed "I doubt you are horrible Laila!" He said seriously and laughed "I just don't know how I'm going to teach you is all..." He leaned in cupping the back of her neck as he slowly ran his tongue at the bottom of her lip "o usually start...softly at the lips" he whispered not wanting to ruin the moment "it's like...asking...permission to enter..." He whispered kissing down her jaw.
Laila smirked, shaking her head, but she stopped as he held her and started to kiss her and she closed her eyes, listening to him. "Ok..." She whispered, not realizing at all that you could use your tongue when you kissed. "Ok..." she whispered again, softer as he kissed down her neck. It tickled, and frankly it felt wonderful. She found herself tipping her head back, opening up. "Ok... I've decided that I'll never be as good as you are...." She whispered, smiling lightly as a shiver rolled down her spine.
