Chris caressed her pale face and started to sing their song, the country song that always came on when they were driving his truck. He sighed and kissed her knuckles "Im so sorry...I'm here, please...come back to me..." He whispered and kissed her softly "I miss you..."

Laila's first sign of recognizing anything was that she blinked, and then whimpered, shifting a little on the bed. And then, as her eyes grew in focus again, she picked up the wall directly in front of her. It was blurry for a moment, and then she could start to see the white tiles... and the posters, and her breathing hitched, her eyes going wide as she started to breathe hard and fast, her whole body tensing up. Each second that the drugs wore off the fear only got worse until Laila was drained of colour and very near screaming again. She had not yet noticed Chris in the room.
Chris moved so that she saw him he pressed his finger to her lips and smiled lightly "shh...hey...remember me?" He whispered caressing her cheek trying to keep her calm "you aren't alone...I'm here now..." He whispered and sighed "Laila I'm sorry I should have been there...Luke wouldn't let me..."
Laila's attention was drawn to him when he pressed a finger to her lips, and for a moment, she just stared, as if not believing. And then she reached out with the only hand that wasn't restrained and gripped the nearest bit of his shirt she could reach, clinging to him. "Chris..." She whispered, her face scrunching in pain as tears filled her eyes. "You're here..." She whispered, straining against her other restrained wrist to try and get closer to him. He was here. She wasn't alone. He was here and everything would be ok now.
Chris undid all restraints and just held her, he closed his eyes just so grateful she was alive that she knew who he was and she wasn't braindead. He moved her hand away from the bandages and kissed her palm "I'm here...everything is going to be ok...I love you...never will stop."
It was a bit awkward moving around with all the tubes that were attached to her, the NJ, an IV, and a catheter, but she managed to pull herself into his lap and curl up there, hiding her face against his chest and listening to his heartbeat as her trembling slowly calmed again. She smiled weakly then, her first smile since she had arrived to the hospital, and she nodded. "I love you too." She whispered. "I love you when I thought I'd never love again."
Chris grabbed some tape and taped everything down so he wouldnt accidentally pull anything out. He held her close and ran her dirty hair through his fingers but he didn't care...she was back in his arms and alive. He kissed her temple letting her stay pressed against his chest though honestly after surgery it was painful very painful...but worth it.
The doctors and nurses had watched the interaction, and they talked among themselves, surprised and heartwarmed by the fact that the moment Lexi had seen Chris, she had stabilized again. When Lexi finally calmed enough to pull her face away from him, and look up, she noted that there was pain in his eyes, and not the hollow emotional kind. Her eyes trailed down his neck and to his chest, where she noticed for the first time, that it was tightly bound in bandages. She gasped, pulling away so she wasn't touching them and looked up at him in shock. "What happened?" She asked softly.
Chris sighed and smiled lightly "hey...I had a little adventure while I was away from you...the fuzz caught me throwing out my last bit of heroine that I was tempted to use but didn't...I was arrested a few days ago and got in a fight in the cell, the jerk stabbed me in the chest with a rusty shank...but Kenna and Luke got me out and had my room be here with you..."
Laila felt her heart sink at his story. He was arrested? Of all times to get landed in jail. This was probably the worst possible moment. "I'm so sorry that happened." She mumbled, leaning her head on his shoulder so she was sitting beside him and not pressing on his chest. "I suppose that they got you out redeems them a little." She said, sighing softly. "I don't want to talk to either of them for a long time." she admitted, shuddering as she remembered how they had ignored her and torn her away from Chris, sending her to the one place she hated and feared above all else.
Chris nodded and pressed his lips to the back of her hand and nuzzled it "don't hate them love...they were worried about you, if your friend was dating a guy that knocked you up was a past drug abuser and alcoholic wouldn't you be concerned only knowing that much?" He wanted to hate them too, really he did but he had to give them the benefit of a doubt as he wanted them to do for him.
Laila winced, closing her eyes as she tried to think rationally. But it was really hard with all the emotions in the way. "Of course I'd be concerned." she whispered. "But... they sent me to a hospital Chris. I'm still in one at this very second." She shook her head slowly. "They know... or at least I thought they knew me well enough to not send me here." Her voice cracked and she turned her face into his shoulder. "If they were concerned they could have, at very worst, just taken me to their place and cared for me there." Laila's small shoulders were shaking again as the tears had come back. She felt betrayed by her closest friends.
Chris held her close and sighed trying to think of what to say to help her, he knew Luke and Kenna were waiting in the waiting room because they did care "they wanted to give you the best chance of getting better, you looked like you were on your death bed at my place...they didn't know your phobia of hospitals you barely told me baby...they don't know you the way I do because you've never let them in as far as you allowed me..."
Laila found herself nodding slowly at his points, even though deep down she wanted to hold a grudge against Kenna and Luke. She wanted to hate them forever, because of the pain they had caused her. But she knew that was selfish and childlike, and she knew Chris was right about second chances, and her letting people in. She never let anyone past her walls except Chris. "Ok. I suppose I could try talking to them again..." She mumbled, giving him a weak smile. "You're really persuasive, you know that?" She asked, closing her eyes as she let out a tired sigh.
Chris sighed and nuzzled her "they don't have to come in now, I'd rather not like to see them to be honest...If Luke had a preference he would have left me in jail..." To die most likely since the medical there was poor and really no one cares what happens to the men in orange. He kissed down her chin and just held her close "I was scared..." He admitted quietly "I almost did use...because I thought what is worth it in life if I can't have you..."
Laila nodded in agreement to that. She didn't want to see them immediately either, if ever. "They can stay out for a while longer." She agreed. She curled up her knees towards her stomach and wrapped one arm around them, keeping herself tucked up against Chris's side. His words touched her and she kissed the closes bit of him that she could reach: his side, "You're too sweet." She whispered, not in a teasing manner at all. "But I know the feeling. I had a seizure when I found myself here without you."
Chris shuddered thinking about that and holding her closer to his side and tracing her facial features with his fingertip "I'm glad that didn't do any permanant damage...but even if there was I wouldn't leave you...I'd care for you and love you like you deserve..." He assured and groaned closing his eyes "I need a nurse to release me from these tubes...I'm fine..."
Laila smiled a little, soothed by his words. She could rely on the fact that even if she did go crazy, or lost her memories, or could no longer function for some reason, that Chris would be there to care for her. "Thank you. Just in case." She whispered. Then she smiled. Here he was complaining about the tubes again. She only saw an IV, but then again, they could have given him a catheter. She smiled a little. "Are they making you uncomfortable...?" She teased, as she had many tubes in herself. But she hit the help button, to get a nurse to come and take them off Chris, she didn't want him to be in discomfort.
Chris blushed and sighed "aye...they are." He said honestly and shifted as the catheter was highly uncomfortable. He squeezed her hand "I'm sure we could get some of yours out as well...I can help you to the bathroom." He flushed but honestly it didn't make him uncomfortable they knew eachother well enough that it didn't make things awkward.
Laila smiled then, a light blush on her cheeks as she nodded, "Alright. I'll ask the nurse when she gets here." She agreed. After Chris had seen her in the tub, and helped take her temperature, there honestly wasn't much room left for being uncomfortable. Sure, she was still shy about it, but she didn't feel sick with embarrassment or anything. The nurse came in, and asked what they needed, and Laila explained that neither wanted the catheters. The nurse didn't see anything wrong with that, so she moved over to Laila to take it out, but Laila insisted on Chris going first, as she knew he was uncomfortable.
Chris switched over to be on his bed which was still touching distant from hers thankfully. The move was extremely painful but he kept his face stoic as he kept his hand in Laila's "I don't mind who goes first." He said honestly to the nurse and lay back against the pillows "I don't understand why I needed it in the first place." He grumbled to himself he was one for being a very crabby patient.
Laila shared a knowing smile with the nurse as Chris grumbled and said he didn't have to go first. The nurse moved over to him and immediately pulled back his hospital gown and took out the catheter, dumping it in the bucket of other instruments to be cleaned. "For your own comfort so you don't have to get up all the time." She responded, smiling as she left him and moved to Laila, removing hers as well. Laila winced in the process, but was overall glad that she had one less tube, thanking the nurse as she left.
Chris smiled squeezing her hand as the nurse removed it and finding he was in too much pain to move back over so he stayed in his bed and watched over her from there "I'm sure that feels better.." He chuckled and caressed her hand softly. He just felt grateful, even through everything he felt grateful he remembered Krissy and frowned "where is that sister of mine...it's getting late she needs some sleep...."
Laila laughed softly after the nurse was gone, and she nodded. "Yeah, it does." She admitted. She could move around more easily now, which was nice. Then she just smiled, nodding towards the corner of the room, where Krissy sat in front of the hospital television, enthralled. "Found her favourite spot." she said, shaking her head. "That girl of yours is quite something."
Chris smiled "hey TV time over squish, did you get your homework done?" He asked trying to sit up but finding that the effects of the surgery without the anesthesia were kicking in and hard. He closed his eyes gripping the railing with the hand that wasn't holding onto Laila's.
Krissy looked over, her smile bright. She flipped off the TV and nodded, running over to sit on the corner of his bed. "Got it all done, thanks to your math questions." She beamed. Her forehead crinkled in worry when she saw him close his eyes in pain. "Are they giving you drugs?" she inquired, worried. Laila laughed softly. "Pain meds, Krissy, and I don't know if they've given him any." She admitted, turning her head to look over at Chris. It worried her how undeniably in pain he looked. "Have they given you anything for that?" She asked.
Chris shook his head "I told them no drugs...just localized injections, I'm fine I won't be fine if I get addicted to them." He said honestly and played with her hair "they don't allow you to stay over here Kass, so you are staying with Laila's brother Andrew ok?" He said kissing her forehead "he'll make sure you get to school on time, may not make as good of lunches as I do though."
Laila kept her worry for him to herself, as she knew he was doing his best to stay off drugs and away from them, but it did really worry her that he was in pain. She hated to see him in pain. Krissy stuck out her bottom lip, not wanting to go anywhere. She wanted to stay here, and that was that.
Laila saw that look and she smiled a little. "He doesn't bite, I promise Krissy. He's got a really great movie selection at home. He'll be coming to pick you up and take you there soon."
Krissy lit up at the mention of movies, and she finally nodded slowly, kissing her brother on the cheek. "Get better soon." She said, hopping off the bed and waving to both of them as she disappeared into the waiting room.
Chris groaned in pain as soon as Krissy was out of ear shot, he closed his eyes so tight they nearly disappeared in the folds of his skin "I don't want drugs..." He kept saying to himself as if convincing his body to stop being in agonizing pain. He hated that Laila had to see him like this do he put the pillow over his face so she wouldn't see him.
Laila winced when she heard Chris's groan and her heart clenched in pity. She hurt because he hurt, and it was agonizing seeing him so in pain. Well. If he wasn't going to ask for drugs, she was going to give them to him. She still had one IV in her hand that was solely drugs to keep her calm, and she didn't think she needed those anymore. They were mild, so they shouldn't get Chris addicted, but at least they might help stop some of his pain. So, gritting her teeth, she pulled out the needle and pinched the tube shut. Then she slowly lifted off the bed, pausing each time nausea caused her to sway, and then slowly made her way over to where Chris was hiding under the pillow. "Give me your hand." She said quickly, knowing she was going to pass out soon if she didn't get this done and get back to bed before then.
Chris realized what she was doing and quickly helped her to the bed before she passed out "love you can't..." He started and then saw her face and slipped the needle in his hand while holding her to him "thank you..." He said honestly and smoothed her hair back kissing her temple "thank you...but you need to tell me before being all heroic...what if you fell?"
Laila didn't protest as he got up and helped her back to bed. She was starting to see spots by the time she got back to the pillows, her vision only clearing once she was lying down again. She almost jerked upright again when he started to refuse the meds and then she relaxed when he put the needle in. "You're welcome." She said softly. "I couldn't bear seeing you in pain." She whispered. Then she opened her eyes again, looking up at him, a slight smile on her face. "If I fell, I would have hit the floor, and then I would have gotten up again." She said simply. "Or I would have asked you to help me."
Chris shook his head amazed at her and just who she was, her strong character and preserverance. "You amaze me everyday..." He said honestly and then blinked as a woman came in that he had never seen, she was...not from around here was the best way to put it. Juicy sweats and unnaturally blonde she hugged Laila tightly "Andrew told me baby! Did you go bullimic again? Now honey I told you a thousand times your perfect! Maybe you should move back home with me and your step dad...Malibu misses you!"
Laila was about to respond to Chris when her mother suddenly came in and her eyes widened. She had not seen her in a long time. And what a great way to start conversation by mentioning that she had been bulimic right in front of Chris. "Ah... yeah..." She said, hugging her back. "I miss Mali too, Mom, but um..." Well this was awkward. "How's Eric doing?" She asked, making a point of using his real name and not calling him 'dad'. He would never be her dad. Laila made a mental note to beat Andrew up about this later.
Chris was in bit of shock, he had many jokes he would crack about this later with Laila but she looked small compared to the Laila he knew. Holy crap what did Malibu and this woman do to her "now LuLu don't be that way, it's been so long! Eric is fine, but you know he's been your daddy since you were a small thing. I don't know why you won't just call him that..." She crinkled her nose at the hospital smell and sprayed Chanel perfume around the room "now isn't that better?"
Laila nearly gagged when she sprayed perfume everywhere. It was so thick she could hardly breathe, but she kept a straight face and nodded slowly. "Sure Mom." Then she shook her head indignantly. "Because I'm a grown woman. I don't run around calling people daddy anymore." She mumbled under her breath. Especially not since her real dad was gone. "How's Mali doing?" She asked quickly, changing the subject. She was antsy. Why was her mother here at all. "Is he doing alright in school?" She asked, wondering how her other brother was. It had been a long long time since she had seen her twin, and that was for a reason.
Chris made a face as well, he hated perfume absolutely hated it. It was a waste of money and destroyed the olfactory glands in his nose. Judy sighed "still dating that theater boy...honestly I don't understand what went wrong when raising all of you." she said rolling her eyes and picking around for a cigarette "He's writing a new book, something about a fake town made of silicone...I don't get it. I reminded him that's what my boobs were made of and he just said 'exactly!"
Laila sighed softly to herself. So Mali was still gay. She would never understand why he chose that path, but she also understood that it was not her place to change it. When her mother went on about Mali's writing, Laila actually grew more interested. "He's actually writing?" She repeated. Her brother had one passion, and that was it. He had dropped it a few years back, and she was glad to hear that he had picked it up again. "Tell him I think that's great." She said seriously. She did think her mother going on about her boobs was a little out of place, and she found herself embarrassed for her mother's sake, especially since Chris was there. But hey, this was her family, regardless of how proud she was of them. "Well... it was nice seeing you Mom... but wont Eric be waiting for you?" She asked, glancing around. She expected to see that greasy man hiding around some corner somewhere. "Let me guess. You guys have a night off tonight?" That always meant renting a hotel, visiting one or two kids, and then having dinner, and later probably having sex all night. Laila tried to stay out of their personal lives.
Chris had secretly contacted the nurse, while the two of them were talking. His girl was miserable and he could see that clearly, from what he was hearing Laila didn't grow up in the best of circumstances and that made her strong and her will to be better powerful. The nurse came in and explained that visiting hours were long over and she would have to leave. Judy rolled her eyes and pecked her daughter's forehead before grabbing her purse "He wants to see you Lu." she said honestly and left with the perfume smell thankfully following her.
Chris sighed looking over at her "Are you ok?"
When the nurse arrived, Laila sighed in relief, the tension rolling off her shoulders. She hadn't realized how stiff she had become, until her mother was gone, and she could feel the ache everywhere. She groaned softly and wiped a hand over her eyes, nodding slowly. "Yeah." She cough/whispered. "Just trying to recover from that smell." She joked, putting on a smile for him. That had been horrible, but she didn't want to say that, because it meant talking about it more, and she didn't want to talk about her family. Though she knew Chris probably had questions, and at some point, she'd have to answer them.
Chris smiled lightly and moved so he was in her bed again as he played with her hand "your mother seems nice..." He tried and played with a stray piece of her hair. He sighed leaning on her shoulder "you don't have to be ashamed everyone has messed up families, it seems like you and Andrew ended up alright..." He paused remembering something "you have a twin brother? Why doesn't he go to the university?"
Laila's laugh was not happy at all at his statement about her mother. "Yeah. She's nice." She said softly. She leaned her head against his and tugged and played with the edge of the blanket. "Yeah. Andrew is pretty much the only one in my family that I actually talk to." she admitted, her tone of voice bordering on forlorn. "Yeah... I have a twin." she admitted, shrugging as if it was no big deal. But it was a big deal. He had been her other half... until he came out about being gay, and disappeared on them for three years. She had never forgiven him for that, and now, she didn't talk to him either, trying to make him pay for the many nights she had cried without him. She shrugged. "He's gay." She said. "My parents sent him to a private school to try and 'knock some sense into that kid'." She said, using her fingers as quote marks.
Chris nodded and hugged her tightly "no shame in that, my best friend was gay in Highschool I loved that kid. He's your twin, he probably misses you immensely...can you just text him and tell him your ok? Andrew probably told the whole family...id love to meet him and his boyfriend." He added completely fine with whoever people loved. He pecked her head "ask him about his book, you love to write too."
Laila raised an eyebrow at him teasingly, but she just shook her head after, keeping quiet. She lay her head on his shoulder, huffing out slowly. What was she supposed to say, 'Yeah, sure... I'll just text him now after not talking to him for the year after he suddenly appeared again?' It had been four years since she had spoken to him, three of which were his fault, one which was hers. Andrew had always been her big brother, and Mali was always her friend. So when he disappeared, she relied on Andrew more than ever. She sighed softly, deciding it was better to not just skirt around the topic. "You can meet him if you'd like. I'm sure my mother would love to introduce you." She said dryly. "She hates his current boyfriend. Not that I'm letting him have you." she chewed her lip, finally just saying it. "I'm not talking to him right now though, Chris." She closed her eyes, trying to maintain composure. "It's complicated."
Chris sighed and hugged her "he can't have me, and I'm not the best looking guy..." He nuzzled her "I just don't want you to break relationships you can't regain, it's your twin it's another part of you...I know it's none of my business but family is everything...Krissy coukd have ignored and hated me because of all my mistakes and leaving the family..."
Laila nodded slowly, sitting up and hugging her arms around herself. "Don't fool yourself. You're the best looking guy in the school." She said, looking over at him. Her smile would have been brighter if they weren't talking about such a tight topic. And Laila was just getting more and more tense. She closed her eyes, feeling nauseous again for a moment, before it passed again. "I..." She shook her head. "There's nothing to break." she whispered. "I don't know him anymore."
Chris sighed "want to change the subject? Want jello favored TPN or hotdog flavored?" He teased and pecked her cheek " let's get a nap in shall we?" He insisted and lay back "do you care if I talk to him?"
Laila nodded, wanting very much to change the topic. But honestly, it was too late to get her to smile again, she just felt hurt and lost thinking about her twin, and that was why she tried to not think of him. She curled up on her side, pulling her blanket over herself, until she was cocooned inside of the sheets. She closed her eyes, sighing softly. "No, I don't mind." She whispered, closing her eyes. "Goodnight Chris."
When Chris and Laila were released from the hospital he took her hand and their suitcase grateful both of them were well. He pecked her cheek and smiled "you look so good Laila..." She gained weight her skin was rosy again and there was happiness in her eyes that he had missed. He was excited for Krissy to come with Laila's birthday puppy.
It had been a fast couple day recovery that all the doctors were amazed by, but Laila was not. She knew that having Chris there helped keep her spirits and will up, healing her like nothing else could. She had still not talked to Kenna or Luke yet, and the Mali issue had been dropped after that one night. Laila liked it that way. She could focus on Chris and everything happy, and ignore anything that was wrong with her life. Laila smiled brightly, catching his lips and she nodded. "So do you. You have battle scars now." She teased, shaking her head. As she got into his truck, she buckled up, glancing at him. "Where to?" They weren't exactly living together... but they had been spending a good amount of time at his place.
