Laila took the clothes he offered her and smiled in thanks. She thought about her two bed choices, and decided that the couch would probably be better for now. They hadn't known each other very long, and Laila still wasn't entirely comfortable with the idea, even if it was just for resting and not anything else. "I'll take the couch." She said, smiling lightly. "Thank you." She took the clothes to his washroom and quickly changed into them, leaving her bra and other clothes in a neat pile where she could get them again in the morning. Tying up her hair in a pony tail, she tried to smooth the comically large clothes on her, before exiting the washroom again.

Chris smiled and made the couch really nice and comfortable as he pecked her cheek "good, well have a good sleep...call me if you need anything baby, I don't want you to have nightmares..." He played with her ponytail and rubbed her back "do you want me to stay till you sleep?"
Laila walked over to the couch and curled onto it, pulling the blankets over herself. Him staying with her would be lovely, but she wasn't going to ask him for it. He had just been in an accident, and it was more important to her that he got better, before she had any comforts she wanted. "You should go rest, Chris. I promise I'll call you if anything is wrong." She said seriously, meaning every word.
Chris smiled and stayed by her humming softly a country song he felt described them perfectly. "Im not doing this for you love...I'm doing this for me. I love you I want to stay and make sure your ok...Id sleep on the couch with you if you would allow.
Laila sighed softly, seeing that she had lost in this one. She certainly couldn't send him away if he insisted that this was what he wanted. Besides, she was already starting to drift off with him there. "Promise... Promise you'll get some rest..." She mumbled, tucking the blanket up to her chin. She let out a soft sigh and allowed her eyes to close.
Chris headed to bed once her chest rose and fell indicating she was in deep sleep. He kissed her and slowly stood and headed to bed after tossed two pain pills in his mouth and lay down in bed checking his schedule for school and trying to figure out how to graduate still.
Laila slept a deep and dreamless sleep for a good few hours before she started to wake again. She never slept deeply for long. She shivered when she woke, not from the cold but from the dreams that had come as she slowly pulled out of her deep sleep. The shivering continued as she lay there, remembering her own delivery and Kennas. But she was used to this sort of thing by now. She was used to the noghtmares. So she merely turned over again and stared at the couch back, willing herself to fall back asleep again.
Cheis has heard something in the kitchen and went to check on it, he pecked her head still thinking her asleep but froened seeing that she wasn't "hey baby...what's going on?...its late pretty girl." He whispered sitting in the couch with her and playing with her hair.
Laila had closed her eyes when she heard Chris get up, and she hoped he would think her asleep. Alas, no luck in that area. He knew. Laila sighed softly and opened her eyes, turning onto her back. "I'm alright Chris, I'm just not a heavy sleeper." She shrugged. "It's normal for me to sleep only a few hours in a night." Well. It had become normal after the incident. She was always in a constant state of exhaustion since then. But there was nothing she could do about that.
Chris sighed "it's not ok baby...you are always tired and have those dark circles under your eyes...you slept all night in my arms at the hospital, do you want to try that? I don't like not being able to help you..."
Laila winced slowly, breathing once before opening her eyes again. He was right of course. But she was still reluctant. "I don't want to keep you up, Chris." She said seriously. She was worried about him. He was the one injured, not her. She didn't count her mental wounds as injuries. "You need your sleep just as much as I need mine." She sighed. "But thank you."
Chris was already starting to crawl in bed with her, he nuzzled into the blanket their noses pressing against eachother "I'll sleep when you get to sleep Laila..." He held her close sighing softly and kissing her hair "no arguments..." She added knowing how stubborn she was.
Laila shot him an annoyed glare. He was as stubborn as she was, and she certainly wasn't used to having someone as stubborn as her around. Besides for just being reluctant to keep him up, Laila also wasn't wearing a bra beneath the sweater, and that made her very conscious of him holding her. She blushed lightly and shook her head. "You are too stubborn." She mumbled.
Chris chuckled lightly and nuzzled her playing with her hair and linking their fingers together "I know...somebody has to be..." He teased and kissed her nose "don't you feel safe and warm in my arms love? I feel better with you here...you fit perfectly..."
Laila blushed further, a smile finally forming on her lips. She blinked when he kissed her nose, and her smile only widened. "Well of course I do... I..." Her blush grew darker and she shook her head. "I didn't want .... to keep you up." she murmured, biting her lip. She figured out what the strange feeling was that she got whenever he kissed her, or she felt his arms around her. She was opening up. Cracking. Letting him past the walls ever so slowly. It was frightening. And for a moment, she tensed. Then she remembered Andrew's words, how he had said that she should let someone in. And slowly she relaxed again, still hesitant, but no longer closed to the idea of opening up.
Chris rubbed her back trying to calm her, he knew this was a very large step towards healing. Allowing someone to be this close to be vulnerable and open yet no words needed to be said. He nuzzled her neck and kissed it softly before resting his eyes "it's ok...it's safe..." He reminded her softly caressing her hand with his thumb.
Laila was trying her hardest to keep herself out and vulnerable, even when everything in her was screaming at her to get back where it was safe. But she refused. For now. For Chris, she refused. She would stay vulnerable, and try to be brave. "I..." she swallowed. "You're the first man that's... that's been anywhere near this close to me in a long time." She whispered, pressing her face against his chest and just breathing in. She wanted him to know that she hadn't been just blocking him out because it was him, but because of her own past. And now she was trying to change. But the topic was too serious, and there were far too many memories for her to stay relaxed, so she quickly tried to get her mind somewhere else. "Tell me a funny story?" she asked. "Something true." she added.
Chris pondered her words and smiiled playing with her hair as he pondered "something true...and funny? You are asking a lot of me love...do you want to hear about the time I thought I was going to be arrested for stealing a balloon?" He asked trying to think of his childhood, before he was corrupted and a jerk.
Her attempt to get her mind off the incident worked, and soon Laila had forgotten all about it, and was staring at him in interest. "Stealing... a balloon!?" She asked, raising an eyebrow. "Of all things, Chris. You could have told me you were a balloon thief! This is serious! I have a ballonist on my hands!" She teased, nodding eagerly. "Tell me about it?"
Chris chuckked and nyzzled her playing with her hands while he told the story "I was seven I think, before Kristine was born...mother had given me a dollar to go to the store and pick up a little bottle of jam. This is before she smoked and my father drank, really good times..." He sighed "anyways I bought the jam and walked by the vender who had all sorts of amazing things to a little boy, candy and wind up toys but what caught my eye was the big red balloons." He smiled thinking about it "I would have given my soul for one of those magical floating devices. I looked everywhere for change but only found a dime and it costed 75 cents...as you probably can guess I was devestated. But then a bad idea came to mind, when the man was preoccupied with the cotton candy I untied one and just ran. I kept hearing sirens in my mind and thinking the police were chasing me as I got home. I couldn't show my parents so I tied it to the dog house before going inside." He shook his head already thinking about the next part "my dog sparky had chewed and popped the balloon when I got back to it the next morning...now I was REALLY in trouble, I had stole and broke a balloon. I went to the police sobbing and begged them to have mercy they laughed right at my face...it was free balloon day."
At first Laila tried to keep a straight solemn face and listen to his story seriously. But as it went on, she found it hard to keep away the smile that was tugging at her features. When she figured out where the story was going, a small giggle escaped her, and by the last sentence, she was freely laughing, her eyes crinkled with happiness. "Chris..." she shook her head. "You sound like you were the cutest kid..." She giggled and then shook her head again. "I'm never going to look at you the same way again. I hope you know that."
Chris laughed and tickled her playfully and shaking his head "oh why did I ever give you ammunition? Now you will mock the poor little balloon theif." He kissed her softly "not even Krissy knows that story, just you...just shows you how much I love and trust you...I hope one day you'll be able to do the same."
Laila's teasing smile turned gentle and she nodded. "I think it's cute. Don't worry. I wont use it against you." She promised. Then she smiled a little brighter. "Unless you give me reason too..." She teased, stealing a kiss of her own. At his last comment, she sobered a little and nodded. "I am trying." She whispered, looking up so her eyes could meet his. "I am trying very hard, it's just been slow going." She sighed softly, closing her eyes then. "I just don't want you to think I'm pushing you away and not trying at all." Her hands clenched into fists as she continued. "I know its not fair that I judge all men now because of one incident. I know its not fair. I tell myself that all the time. Its just... its really hard to forget. I heard it takes four good memories to replace one bad one... so I guess it will just take time."
Chris nodded showing he understood and cared, he loved this girl and he was patient and would be to make sure she was happy. He laced their fingers together "then I'll make it that everyday is a good memory Laila...I promise." He meant it, he was going to fill her life with joy now not stress and anguish. He kissed her softly "your my red balloon...this time I'm not going to let you go..."
Laila finally smiled, resting her forehead against his chest as the heat rose into her cheeks. "I don't deserve you." She whispered, amazed by his patience and his willingness to sacrifice for her. Certainly no other girl in the world had such a wonderful boyfriend as this. She tipped her head up and pressed her lips to his, allowing this kiss to linger longer than just a peck, drawing into something more before she relaxed and rested her forehead against his, relaxed. "I love you, Chris." She whispered, her heart pounding in anxiety the moment she said it, as it was hard to say something so blatantly. It was making herself vulnerable, but she was going to take that chance.
Chris smiled and pulled the blankets around her shoulders "I love you more...now because I love you I know it's time to sleep..." He whispered and turned off the lamp being immersed in the darkness as he listened to the rain outside patter, no thunder though which he was grateful for he didn't want her scared. He inhaled her scent and relaxed like that falling asleep,
Laila smiled, not protesting that. As the lights went dim, she lay her head tucked beneath Chris's and sighed happily. It didn't take her very long to fall asleep like that, and this time, she slept all the way through till morning, her sleep deep and crafefree enough that she didn't dream once all night.
The next day Chris got up and got the kitchen cleaned and made breakfast for them. He woke up Kristine smiling "hey smart gal, ready for your first day of school? I have a pink backpack and polka dot water bottle all ready for you to take, Laila is still asleep she needs some rest."
Krissy grumbled, not liking to get up this early. "Do I really have to go to school?" She asked once she was dressed and eating breakfast. "No one will like me." She mumbled through her eggs. "And I'm not smart enough anyways." She glanced over at Laila sleeping on the couch before taking a big bite of her toast. "I'll keep the back pack and water bottle, but I don't want to go to school."
Chris smiled and hugged her "everyone will like you Krissy, I love you and you will have so much fun and you are so smart for your age." He promised and pecked her cheek and helped her with her backpack "I have my phone text me during lunch ok?"
Krissy bit her lip, clearly nervous, but she nodded, adjusting her backpack and then hugging him. She walked to the door and then nodded a little. "I'll text you." She promised, still looking quite nervous, before she walked out and down to the sidewalk where the bus was waiting. She waved once, and then got on and the bus pulled away. Laila woke not long after and she felt positively disgusting. This was to be expected as all her exhaustion finally caught up to her now that she was no longer holding onto it all. But it felt like she had been hit by a bus, and she groaned softly, turning over again.
Chris felt a lump in his throat, he was so worried about her but she'd be ok...she was a good kid, his kid sister would be the most popular girl there. He brought over the food but tucked her in more "get some more sleep Angel..." He whispered and went to refrigerate the juice for her."
Laila could plainly see the worry on Chris's features, even through her fever haze. "She'll be alright." she said, smiling weakly. "Krissy is such an energetic girl. She'll make lots of friends." She assured, wincing as another bout of unrest stirred her stomach again. She started to think it might have just been better to hold onto her emotions and live with the exhaustion, but part of her always knew that healing would be painful, like withdrawal from a drug.
Chris his hand on her forehead worriedly "your burning up Laila..." He said softly running to get a cold rag to put on her head as he got more pillows to put behind her back "I do hope your not getting sick..." He said his eyes clouded with worry and love for her "do you feel like eating?"
Laila smiled weakly and shook her head, knowing there was no point in worrying over her. Her body was just exhausted, and because of that, her immune system was low. "I'm alright Chris, I promise." She mumbled, but she didn't resist as he got a cold rag and more pillows. She was starting to shiver, even though she didn't think the temperature could have dropped that much. "I might try to eat something." She agreed, not having much of an appetite, but still feeling hungry.
Chris frowned worried about the shivers, he tucked a hot pad near her core to warm her up while keeping the rag on her forehead to ease the fever. He nodded spooning some eggs and feeding her since she was tucked in the blankets "I think this is your bodies way of telling you that you can't keep on living like this...stress eats away at your health as well." He got her a straw so she could sip her juice.
Laila ate the eggs that he fed to her, feeling like a small child all bundles up in the blankets. She nodded, as she knew he was right. But that didn't make her feel any better. She still felt sick, and she couldn't have helped being stressed. She drank a little of the juice, but when her stomach bubbled and lurched, she stopped, closing her eyes and just breathing for a moment. "I'll be alright." She said again. "I just need to rest for a while..."
Chris sighed and nodded pecking her forehead "love you...get some sleep and I'll be here just call. I'm going to work on my homework and grade tests for the professor." He pecked down her jaw and left to the dining room with his laptop.
Laila nodded in agreement, knowing that he and she both needed to catch up on school if they wanted to pass. She squeezed his hand encouragingly and tried to fall asleep. But her stomach was in constant turmoil. She slowly got up and swayed as dizziness assaulted her brain. Bent over slightly, she hobbled to the washroom, hoping that would help. She only ended up throwing up into the toilet when she got there. Feeling gross and covered in sweat, she shut the bathroom door and locked it, turning on the water in the tub. Stripping out of her borrowed clothes, she sank into the hot water, hoping that a bath would help.
Chris hurried and went to help her, he unlocked the door with the pick and went to help her clean up. He sighed "baby I think you've got the flu or something..." He wiped the sweat off her brow and sighed "if this doesn't get better im calling a doxtor." He insisted and kissed her shoulder.
Laila leaned her head tiredly against the side of the tub, her eyes closed as Chris wiped her face. She was so dizzy and shaky that honestly she couldn't care less that she was currently unclothed beneath the water. Besides, the bubbles helped cover most things up, and the water was doing wonders to settle her stomach. "I might have the flu." She agreed, focusing on her breathing. "But flus aren't anything serious, it wont last." Then she cracked one eye open. "The water is really helping, but I didn't expect you to come in." She admitted, smiling lightly. "Did you pick the lock?"
Chris chuckled "I did...I'm sorry I got scared and my criminal instincts kicked in. By the way im not looking but you are the most beautiful girl I have ever seen." He kissed her shoulder and stroke her sweaty bubbly hair "yeah but the doctor can get you medicine to help you...should I call him?"
Chris chuckled "I did...I'm sorry I got scared and my criminal instincts kicked in. By the way im not looking but you are the most beautiful girl I have ever seen." He kissed her shoulder and stroke her sweaty bubbly hair "yeah but the doctor can get you medicine to help you...should I call him?" He rubbed her hand "I love you I hate seeing you so sick."
Then it was Laila's turn to laugh softly. "Not looking, hm?" She shook her head slowly, "Then how would you know whether or not I was the most beautiful girl?" She teased. Then she winced as unease rocked her stomach again. She really didn't want to see any doctors at all, but if they had something to help settle her stomach, then maybe it would be worth it. "I suppose you could." She sighed finally. "But not yet. Let's wait to see if my stomach settles in the next couple hours." She asked, closing her eyes again. "I might get better first."
Chris smiled and kissed her hair leaning in close "ok I'm looking...and you are beautiful." He nuzzled her and sighed "ok so you want me to massage your stomach softly, that helps my nausea when I was hung over." He shook his head "bad example, I'm a bad care giver."
Laila knew that she was blushing then, as the chill of the fever was chased away by a heat in her face and neck. "I'm flattered." she whispered, knowing that he had seen many women, and if he still thought she was beautiful, then that had to mean something. She smiled lightly at his offer and following comment. "Nonsense. I think that might be nice." She said, moving through the water so she was resting on her back and not her side, and her stomach was more easily accessible.
Chris smiled and rubbed her stomach slowly and not letting any feelings getting to him. He smiled at her "this is a huge step of trust Laila...I'm not going to violate it I promise. Is that helping?" He asked wortiedly and pecked her lips "we have our plans this weekend so let's hope you get well by then, do you like jet skiing?"
Laila was honestly too sick to care less that he was seeing her naked for the first time. If she had been more well, then it would have been hard to ignore any memories that jumped up at the touch of a man. So maybe being sick was a good thing. It helped distract her from the bad memories, and what was happening right now wasn't tampered. She smiled lightly, closing her eyes and sighing in relief as her stomach started to settle at last. "I know, Chris. I wouldn't have let you anywhere near me, if I didn't trust you." She whispered, meaning that seriously. "I feel better already, so thank you."
Chris smiled and stopped getting a washcloth to cover her essentials as he leaned back and sighed "I'm glad...you just relax and breathe. I'm going to work on my essay and I'm going to need your helpm. Your the smartest girl I know..." He turned on his computer and sighed "Kenna sent me pictures if the baby..."
Laila nodded, leaning her head back against the tub wall and closing her eyes. "I'll try to help." She agreed, hoping she could at least return the favour he had done by settling her stomach. When he said Kenna had sent pictures of the baby, her eyes opened again, and she moved to the side of the tub, looking over in interest. "Can I see?" She asked hopefully.
